If an update is available:\n\n1. You'll see a confirmation dialog: \"Update to vX.Y.Z?\"\n2. A persistent **widget below the editor** shows: `📦 Update available: vX.Y.Z`\n3. Click **Yes** to install, **No** to postpone\n\nIf you click **No**, the extension remembers and won't bother you until a newer version is released.\n\n### Status Widget\n\nThe extension displays a persistent widget below the editor showing current update status:\n\n| State | Widget Display |\n|-------|----------------|\n| Update available | `📦 Update available: v1.2.3` |\n| Pending (from previous session) | `📦 Update available: v1.2.3 (pending since 3/20/2026)` |\n| Up to date | `✓ pi is up to date (v1.2.3)` |\n| After dismiss | `⏭️ Update dismissed until next release` |\n| After successful update | `✓ Updated to v1.2.3` |\n\n### Manual Commands\n\n- `/autoupdate` - Toggle autoupdate on/off or show current status\n- `/check-update` - Check for updates and install if available\n- `/dismiss-update` - Skip this version (won't prompt again until next release)\n- `/clear-update` - Clear saved update state\n\n## How It Works\n\n1. On `session_start`, the extension checks npm for the latest version\n2. It compares against the currently installed version\n3. If an update exists and wasn't dismissed, prompts the user and shows in widget\n4. If confirmed, runs `npm install -g @mariozechner/pi-coding-agent`\n5. After install, tells you to restart pi\n\n## State Files\n\nState is stored in `~/.pi/`:\n\n- `autoupdate-state.json` - Pending update info (version, changelog URL, detected date)\n- `autoupdate-current-version.txt` - Dismissed version number\n- `autoupdate-settings.json` - Extension settings (enabled/disabled)\n","readmeFilename":"README.md","_rev":"1-44c5f27785711a3dd1364c53ab4ed09b"}
