The\nproject bank holds knowledge about the repository you are in β€” decisions and\ntheir rationale, constraints, verified know-how, pitfalls; the automatic write\npath, the `hindsight_retain` tool and per-turn recall all work against it. The\nuser bank holds standing facts about the **person**, true in any repository β€”\nhow you like to work, your tools, your prohibitions. Enable it with `userBankId`\n(or `HINDSIGHT_USER_BANK`) and the agent gains a dedicated write tool,\n`hindsight_retain_user` β€” the only path that can reach the user bank: the\nautomatic pipeline is wired to the project bank and structurally cannot touch it.\n\n## The user block in the system prompt\n\nWhat the user bank knows can be placed straight into the agent's instructions:\nput a marker in an `AGENTS.md` the agent already loads and the extension\nreplaces it with a `` block built from the user bank. The reason is cost: the\nprovider caches the system-prompt prefix, and content that changed between\nturns would invalidate that cache on every turn and multiply the price of a\nlong session several-fold. So a fact written now appears at the next boundary\nβ€” the widget's `≑` fragment (gallery above) tells \"deferred\" from \"broken\".\n\n> [!NOTE]\n> A marker is a note addressed to the extension, not to the model. One selector\n> only; a marker with anything unparsed is refused whole, and a parsed marker\n> that cannot be answered (no server, empty bank, a model still generating) is\n> **removed** from the prompt rather than left in it. Your file is never edited\n> β€” you are warned once per session instead, and a block built at an earlier\n> boundary survives a failed one as a stale cache.\n\n## How it works\n\n**Recall (read path).** Before each turn a cheap model distils the message plus\nrecent context into a few standalone bank queries, runs them in parallel, judges\nthe hits for relevance, and injects the survivors verbatim β€” capped at\n`recallMaxLines`, de-duplicated against what the session already saw. At a task\nboundary a detector triggers a deeper pass: one coherent briefing, not bullets.\n\n**Memorize (write path).** Fires on compaction, on `/mem-save`, and as a safety\nnet when a session quits. Extract, merge, verify, bank-aware dedup, store β€” all\ninside the extension via isolated model calls: no agent turn, no context\npollution. Every write carries a deterministic `document_id`, so a retried\nwrite upserts instead of duplicating. What gets stored is facts only, never\ninvented: goals, decisions with rationale, constraints, verified know-how,\npitfalls, non-obvious locations β€” never code diffs, raw tool output, chatter,\nunexecuted plans, or secret values (only where a secret lives). Each candidate\nis kept only if a future agent knowing it would act differently, and all memory\nis written in one configured language, so the same fact never exists in two\ntongues.\n\n### Letting a fact die\n\nA bank that only grows eventually asserts things that stopped being true, so\nthe write path may retire a bank fact (`factInvalidation`, on by default) β€” but\nonly an orphan that consolidation can never fix, such as a duplicate or a fact\nabout deleted code, and only with a verbatim transcript quote as evidence,\nre-checked in code before the kill. A failure here never costs the write\nitself. Every kill is auditable: `/mem` β†’ Log shows it as a `↓ … retire` row\nwith the quote that condemned it, and pressing `u` on that row puts every fact\nthe entry killed back into the bank and into recall β€” one keypress,\nrow-granular β€” while a `restore` entry is appended to the log so the history\nstays honest. Set `HINDSIGHT_FACT_INVALIDATION=0` if you would rather your\nfacts never die.\n\n### Review (`/mem` β†’ Review tab)\n\nEvery stored document also lands in a global review queue, and the Review tab\nwalks the pending ones: approve, edit (re-stored under the same id, replacing\nthe old facts), or delete. An entry nobody touches for 7 days is approved\nautomatically (`reviewAutoApproveDays`; `0` keeps everything pending forever)\nβ€” safe, because the document was already stored in the bank the moment it was\nenqueued: approval leaves the bank untouched, and delete is the only action\nthat removes anything.
