What changes is everything around them: each\nunit of work is written down as a contract *before* an agent implements it —\nwhat the work is, which files it may read, which files it may change, what\nsuccess means, and how to check it — and a separate agent reviews the result\nagainst that same contract.\n\nThose contracts, the review findings, and the record of what actually ran stay\nin your repository after the agent sessions end. Work that spans hours, many\nfiles, or several agents no longer depends on one chat session remembering the\nplan.\n\nAgentChassis is not a coding agent and ships no model of its own.\n\n## Who it's for\n\nEngineers and teams already using Codex or Claude for nontrivial repository\nwork, who have hit the point where longer-running, multi-step, or parallel agent\nwork needs more coordination than a prompt and an unrestricted checkout.\n\nIt is deliberately not aimed at the five-minute, single-file, closely watched\nedit. A single-shot coding assistant handles that fine, and AgentChassis would\nonly add setup. It earns that setup when work runs long, touches many files,\nruns unattended, or runs several agents at once.\n\n## What changes compared with using Codex or Claude directly\n\nFour things move out of the model session and into the repository: **intent**\nbecomes durable, **scope** becomes declared, **implementation and review**\nbecome separate roles, and **coordination evidence** is retained.\n\n| Using a coding agent directly | With AgentChassis |\n| --- | --- |\n| Intent lives in the prompt and the evolving chat context | Intent is written into a repository-local contract before implementation |\n| One session plans, implements, and decides it is done | Defining, implementing, and reviewing are separate roles with different authority |\n| The agent works with whatever repository access its client gives it | Each unit declares what it may read and change; managed runs can be confined to that on a supported backend |\n| A reviewer has to reconstruct what was meant | Review compares the exact change against the contract that predates it |\n| Resuming means rebuilding lost context | The contract, findings, and run record outlive the session |\n| Parallel work is coordinated informally | Declared scopes divide the files up front, and launcher-managed runs on a supported backend hold agents to that division |\n\nDeclared write scopes are how concurrent work is divided: each unit states which\nfiles it owns before anything runs. On its own that is coordination, and it\nbinds only agents that respect it. It becomes enforcement on a\nlauncher-dispatched managed run with a supported containment backend, where an\nagent cannot write outside its declared scope at all. Neither the coordination\nnor the enforcement makes two independent changes semantically compatible with\neach other — that is still a design and review question.\n\n## Example: one bounded change\n\n> **Illustrative only.** The walkthrough below is written by hand to show the\n> shape of the workflow. No demo repository, fixture, or recording ships with\n> AgentChassis today.\n\nSay the request is:\n\n> Add request-body validation to `POST /users`, with tests, without touching the\n> other routes.\n\n**1. The request becomes a written contract.** Before any implementation agent\nstarts, the work is written down. In plain terms:\n\n```text\nWork        Add request-body validation to POST /users\n\nMay read    src/users/**\n            tests/users/**\n\nMay change  src/users/validation.ts\n            tests/users/validation.test.ts\n\nSuccess     - a request with an invalid email returns 400\n            - requests that were valid before still succeed\n            - no route other than POST /users changes behavior\n\nValidate    run the declared user-route test target\n```\n\nThat is a readable rendering. On disk the unit is a structured record with a\nschema, an allocated identifier, and machine-checkable fields; see\n[docs/work-record-ontology.md](docs/work-record-ontology.md) for the real shape.\n\n**2. A readiness check runs before any model does.** AgentChassis checks the\nunit structurally and against configured policy: is there a declared write\nscope, are there acceptance criteria, is there something to validate against. A\nmalformed unit is refused deterministically, before an implementation model is\nlaunched. This establishes structural and policy readiness only — it is not a\njudgment that the task is correct, safe, complete, or permitted to land.\n\n**3. A separate agent implements it.** The unit is the implementation agent's\ncontract; alongside it the agent receives its role instructions and the\nrepository context the unit declares. It does not inherit the conversation that\nproduced the unit, and it is given no repository context the unit did not\ndeclare. On a launcher-dispatched managed run with a supported\ncontainment backend active — Linux `bwrap` today — its repository visibility is\nexactly the declared read and write paths, and it can write only the declared\nwrite scope. Where no supported backend is in use, the run is recorded as\nunenforced rather than represented as confined.\n\n**4. A separate agent reviews the exact result.** The reviewer inspects the\ncommitted change against that same contract and returns findings, ordered by\nseverity. It is a findings-only role: it does not edit the change and it does\nnot approve it. Findings are advisory evidence. Integrating the change,\nadmission through the hosted control plane, and publishing a pull request are\nseparate authorities, decided outside the review.\n\n**5. The evidence stays in the repository.** The contract, its closure record,\nthe review findings, and the provenance of what ran — including whether the run\nwas enforced and on which backend — remain after every agent session has ended.\n\n## The rule underneath it\n\n**The agent that defines the work cannot implement it.**\n\nOnce the loop above is clear, so is the reason for the rule. If one agent may\ndefine the work, do the work, and decide the work is finished, then scope,\nsuccess, and completion are all just that agent's opinion at the end of a long\nsession. Splitting those authorities is what makes the contract worth writing\nand the review worth reading.\n\n## Current status\n\nAgentChassis is on the 0.6.x line and its interfaces are still moving.\n\n- **License:** source-available under the Elastic License 2.0 — see\n  [LICENSE](LICENSE).\n- **Distribution:** the `@agent-chassis/*` packages are published to the public\n  npm registry and install with a plain `npm install` — no `.npmrc`, scope\n  mapping, or authentication.\n- **Runtime:** Node.js 22 or newer.\n- **Agent families:** Codex and Claude are the documented supported launcher\n  families.\n- **Filesystem containment:** Linux `bwrap` is the current backend, and\n  containment applies to launcher-dispatched managed worker, reviewer, and\n  redteam runs. Other execution is recorded as unenforced, never as confined.\n- **Hosted governance:** the Chassis Control Engine is in private beta. Local\n  use never requires it.\n- **Migration tooling:** contract versioning is defined, but explicit migration\n  commands are not implemented yet — see\n  [docs/versioning.md](docs/versioning.md).\n\n## Install\n\nYou need a Git repository, Node.js 22 or newer, and a local Codex or Claude\ninstall. This fresh-install path assumes the repository has no existing root\nagent guidance or AgentChassis adoption state; existing-repository adoption is\nseparate. From your repo root:\n\n```bash\nnpm install --save-dev @agent-chassis/core\nnpx agent-chassis setup\n```\n\n`@agent-chassis/core` is the normal public install package. It provides the\n`wiki` binary for bootstrap, validation, lint, generated views, and the code\nindex; the `wiki-mcp` stdio MCP server that agents call for structured\nrepository and coordination operations; and the `agent-launch` operator\nentrypoint.\n\nThe package install only detects supported local agent CLIs and prints guidance;\nit does not mutate repository or client configuration. `setup` runs bootstrap,\nasks for or detects the local agent family, copies a launcher config template\nwhen none is present, initializes launcher config, and prints the remaining\ncommands. It does not launch anything or create, read, modify, or delete root\n`AGENTS.md` or `CLAUDE.md`. Run its two operator-owned guidance commands before\nstaging:\n\n```sh\ncat wiki/templates/AGENTS.md.boilerplate.md >> AGENTS.md\nprintf '@AGENTS.md\\n' > CLAUDE.md\n```\n\nFresh bootstrap seeds the wiki contract surfaces, an in-progress `IN-0001`\nplaceholder for the repository's first real work, local caches, the workspace\ndeclaration, and the initial lexical search index. It creates no `WK-0001`; that\nidentifier remains available for the first allocator-backed work record. The\nfresh path has no adoption-verification gate, AGENTS-authoring worker,\ncustomization review, or other adoption lifecycle.\n\nThe code index is required for normal operation. Build it after committing the\nbootstrap output and both operator-created guidance files. The first\norchestrator launch omits `--app`; family selection comes from\n`agent-launch.toml` unless an operator explicitly overrides it.\n\nThe full first-run path — bootstrap detail, the required code index, MCP client\nwiring, role model configuration, and the sandbox prerequisite — is in\n[docs/quickstart.md](docs/quickstart.md).\n\n## Running work\n\nOrchestrator sessions are human/operator entrypoints; agents do not launch or\nresume them. They are interactive and stay attached to your terminal, though\nattached does not mean hands-on — an orchestrator routinely runs on its own for\nhours, and the session is there so you can watch and step in.\n\n```bash\nnpx agent-launch orchestrator IN-0001 --model opus\n```\n\nModel and effort selection, resume, run listing, and the rest of the launcher\nsurface are in\n[docs/agent-launch-operator-entrypoints.md](docs/agent-launch-operator-entrypoints.md).\n\n## Enforcement posture\n\nWhether a managed run is actually contained turns on two separate questions.\n\n- **Can it enforce?** When a supported isolation backend is active for the\n  launch — Linux `bwrap` today — a launcher-dispatched worker, reviewer, or\n  redteam run is contained to its declared scope and recorded as enforced.\n- **Must it enforce?** A configured Chassis Control Engine key selects the\n  enforcement-required posture. Without one, local use may proceed unenforced\n  when no backend is usable. With one, dispatch refuses unless the operator sets\n  an explicit opt-out. The key adds no sandboxing capability; it selects the\n  posture.\n\nEvery run records whether it was enforced and which backend, if any, was used. A\nrun that was not enforced is recorded loudly as unenforced and is never\npresented, labelled, or attested as confined.\n\nThis is contract enforcement and honest provenance, not a security guarantee.\nThe threat model is explicitly not hostile-agent security: the local mechanisms\nkeep an *honest* agent inside the lane its contract declared, and someone who\nalready holds your shell, filesystem, and credentials can defeat all of them.\n[docs/enforcement-model.md](docs/enforcement-model.md) states the boundaries and\ntheir limits.\n\n## Local and hosted governance\n\nEverything above is AgentChassis's local coordination and enforcement layer: it\nruns on your machine and needs no AgentChassis account, API key, or hosted\nservice. The coding agents it drives are unchanged — Codex and Claude keep\nwhatever provider account and network access they already require.\n\nThe hosted **Chassis Control Engine** is a separate, private-beta layer for\nteams that need central admission and audit across many repositories: it decides\nwhether a given piece of agent work may run at all, and returns a signed\nattestation when it grants one. Signed attestation belongs to that hosted layer\nalone — the local tier records enforcement state honestly but mints no signed\nclaim of its own. Request access: https://forms.gle/YBJc1TnxoEPea3kx6\n\n## What stays in your repository\n\n- product source code and repo-specific docs\n- work records, initiatives, decisions, and sources under `wiki/`\n- local schema extensions and repository policy\n- package installation and MCP client configuration\n\n## Why this exists\n\nLong-horizon agent work is still hard, and not for the reason people usually\nreach for. Evaluated language-model agents drift from the objective they were\nassigned when they run long under competing pressures\n([Evaluating Goal Drift in Language Model Agents, 2025](https://arxiv.org/abs/2505.02709)),\nand on SWE-Bench Pro's long-horizon software-engineering tasks the evaluated\nmodels stayed below 45% Pass@1\n([SWE-Bench Pro, 2025](https://arxiv.org/abs/2509.16941)). Raw context length is\nnot the whole story: coding agents can mitigate ordinary long-context\nlimitations through tools and filesystem interaction\n([Coding Agents are Effective Long-Context Processors, 2026](https://arxiv.org/abs/2603.20432)).\nHolding an agent to a stated objective over a long run is the part that does not\ncome for free.\n\nBetter prompts do not close that gap. Agent execution is non-deterministic and\npath-dependent, so what an agent does at runtime cannot be fully governed at\ndesign time by instructions or static access controls. Runtime-governance\nresearch points at the same answer: constrain the execution path itself, with\nchecks before the action and monitors during it, rather than relying on\nafter-the-fact review\n([Runtime Governance for AI Agents: Policies on Paths, 2026](https://arxiv.org/abs/2603.16586);\n[MI9: Runtime Governance for Agentic AI, 2025](https://arxiv.org/abs/2508.03858);\n[SARC: Governance-by-Architecture, 2026](https://arxiv.org/abs/2605.07728)).\n\nAgentChassis applies that to coding work: every unit has a written contract,\nmanaged execution is contained to the scope that contract declared where a\nsupported backend allows it, and the result is reviewed against the contract.\n\n## License\n\nSource-available under the Elastic License 2.0 — see [LICENSE](LICENSE).\n\n## Documentation\n\nCanonical documentation lives in [`docs/`](docs/), indexed by\n[docs/index.md](docs/index.md).\n\n- **Set up:** [docs/quickstart.md](docs/quickstart.md) ·\n  [docs/package-install.md](docs/package-install.md) ·\n  [docs/adoption.md](docs/adoption.md)\n- **Understand the model:**\n  [docs/operating-model.md](docs/operating-model.md) ·\n  [docs/enforcement-model.md](docs/enforcement-model.md) ·\n  [docs/work-record-ontology.md](docs/work-record-ontology.md)\n- **Operate:**\n  [docs/agent-launch-quickstart.md](docs/agent-launch-quickstart.md) ·\n  [docs/agent-launch-operator-entrypoints.md](docs/agent-launch-operator-entrypoints.md)\n- **Agent interface:** [docs/mcp-integration.md](docs/mcp-integration.md) ·\n  [docs/tool-discovery.md](docs/tool-discovery.md) ·\n  [docs/mcp-operation-reference.md](docs/mcp-operation-reference.md)\n- **Stability:** [docs/versioning.md](docs/versioning.md)\n\nAgents and agentic tools start at\n[docs/README-agents.md](docs/README-agents.md) for the retrieval order, repo\nmap, and live per-package roadmaps.\n","readmeFilename":"README.md"}
