Studio-side concerns (theme, error UI, debug observers) extend via hooks rather than forking the orchestration.\n\n> Status: CSR + SSR-hydrate single-mount surface with live `update()` / `updatePages()`. Per-page chunk loading via `resolveView`.\n\n## What's in here\n\n- `mountCartridge(opts)` — the only entry point. Runs the full mount sequence.\n- `MountCartridgeOptions<TData, TConfig>` — required: `cartridge`, `config`, `template`, `host`. Everything else optional.\n- `MountCartridgeResult` — discriminated union: either `{ blocked: false, app, shell, destroy, update, updatePages }` or `{ blocked: true, blockedBy, shell, destroy }`.\n- `ShellHandle` — what `onShellReady` receives: `renderRoot`, `styleRoot`, `events`, `rootId`.\n- `MountPhase` — phase identifier for `onError`: `'shell' | 'gate' | 'fetch' | 'pipeline' | 'mount' | 'resolve-view'`.\n\n## Why this exists\n\nWithout this package, every host app that runs a cartridge would inline the same ~75 LOC of orchestration:\n\n1. Set up the isolation root + style root.\n2. Resolve the entry page (URL > `initialNavState` > default) and run the gates that apply to it — **before** any data.\n3. Pick a data source, run `dataSource.fetch()` (or skip if `preloadedData` was passed).\n4. Run the cartridge's transformer chain via `createPipeline`.\n5. Build `AppConfig` from the template's pages.\n6. Delegate to `createCartridgeApp` (app context, renderer resolution, `createApp`).\n\nThat's generic plumbing. Sync. Use for:\n\n- Injecting global widget CSS into `shell.styleRoot`.\n- Attaching theme engines to `shell.events` + `shell.renderRoot`.\n- Registering debug observers / mutation observers.\n\nDo NOT use for content rendering — the runtime mounts page renderers later via `createCartridgeApp`.\n\n### `onError(phase, err, shell)`\n\nFires when a phase throws. The error is then re-thrown — the runtime never silently swallows. `shell` is `null` only when phase 'shell' itself failed. Use for:\n\n- Rendering studio-specific error UI in `host`.\n- Logging / telemetry.\n- Triaging by phase: `'gate'` errors are a precheck that could not verify (offer a retry), `'fetch'` errors get a retry button, `'pipeline'` errors are likely cartridge bugs.\n\n## Gates (0.11.0)\n\nGates run **before** the data fetch: a blocked mount costs no network and no pipeline. The runtime resolves the entry page first (`resolveMountEntry` — URL > `initialNavState` > default, the same ladder `PageManager` uses), then runs `runGatePhase`. A gate declared `appliesTo: 'private'` runs only when that entry page is `private: true`.\n\n- **`satisfiedGates`** — gate ids the host's server render already met for this initial mount (from `renderAppWithPublication`'s `gates.satisfied`; the host prints them as `data-airo-gates-satisfied` on the mount root and its client entry passes them here). Skipped once, narrated `gate:allowed { via: 'server' }`. Remounts re-run every gate — a remount exists to get fresh data.\n- **`data-airo-gate`** — a host that needs zero painted frames before a gate ships `data-airo-gate=\"pending\"` on the host element and hides under it with its own CSS; the runtime resolves the attribute on every exit of the gate phase (`passed`, including \"no gate applied\"; `blocked`; `error`). Absent → never written.\n- **Hydrate** — the runtime snapshots the server's markup before the gate phase and restores it when a gate that painted into the render root allows. Anything a gate mutates elsewhere it undoes itself.\n- **Narration** — `gate:precheck`, `gate:mount`, `gate:allowed`, `gate:blocked` on `shell.events`.\n\nA Gate decides whether to paint; whether to serve is the host's, per request. Bots are never gated. The cast disappears (the runtime calls `createCartridgeApp`, which handles the registry's heterogeneous typing internally), and the gate phase is scoped to the entry the URL names without you re-deriving it.\n\n## SSR-hydrate path (v0.2)\n\n```ts\n// Customer page already has SSR markup in `host`.\nconst result = await mountCartridge({\n  cartridge,\n  config,\n  template,\n  host,\n  preloadedData: ssrSnapshot,    // same data the SSR render saw\n  mode: 'hydrate',\n});\n```\n\nWhat `mode: 'hydrate'` does:\n\n- Preserves the existing markup in `host` (moves it inside the shadow wrapper when isolation is `'shadow'`).\n- Drives the active page renderer's `hydrate()` instead of `render()` — listeners attach without repainting.\n- Renderers without `hydrate()` fall back to `render()` (with a `[@airo-js/core]` warning); the SSR markup is repainted client-side. Cartridges that ship to SSR pages should implement `hydrate()` on every view that's allowed to be the entry page.\n- **Applies to the initial mount only.** An `update()` / `updatePages()` remount always repaints: it runs after the previous App was destroyed, so there is no server markup left to adopt. `mode` is not a per-remount switch, and a host does not need one (fixed in runtime 0.11.1 — before it, a remount hydrated an emptied render root and the widget went blank).\n\n`mode: 'csr'` (the default) ignores any pre-existing markup and paints fresh — the v0.1 behaviour.\n\n## Deferred (signature-compatible — additive)\n\n- `chunkBase?: string` — CDN URL prefix for lazy-loaded per-page chunks.\n- async `onShellReady` — when a real use case (server-fetched theme tokens) shows up.\n\n## License\n\nApache-2.0 — same as the rest of `@airo-js/*`.\n","readmeFilename":"README.md"}
