Those are real security controls, not marketing copy.\n\n## What APort adds\n\nAPort complements those controls with external authorization and audit:\n\n- per-agent passports and capability limits\n- parameter-aware deny decisions, not just static tool allowlists\n- local or hosted kill switch by suspending the passport\n- signed decision receipts and centralized audit in API mode\n- the same authorization model across OpenClaw and other frameworks\n\nIf OpenClaw's built-in sandbox and tool policy are enough for your deployment, use them. If you need portable authorization, identity-scoped limits, or fleet-wide kill switch and audit, add APort on top.\n\n## Development install\n\nIf you are working from a local checkout, install the plugin directly from the extension directory:\n\n```bash\nopenclaw plugins install --link /path/to/aport-agent-guardrails/extensions/openclaw-aport\n```\n\nThat command installs only the OpenClaw plugin bundle. For a full working setup, use:\n\n```bash\nnpx @aporthq/aport-agent-guardrails openclaw\n```\n\nThen configure it in your OpenClaw config:\n\n```yaml\nplugins:\n  enabled: true\n  entries:\n    openclaw-aport:\n      enabled: true\n      config:\n        mode: api\n        passportFile: ~/.openclaw/aport/passport.json\n        apiUrl: https://api.aport.io\n        failClosed: true\n        enforcementMode: enforce\n        allowUnmappedTools: false\n```\n\nHosted passport mode uses `agentId` instead of `passportFile`.\n\n## Modes\n\n### API mode\n\n- Uses `fetch()` directly from the plugin\n- Returns signed decisions from `api.aport.io`\n- Configure `apiKey` in plugin config if your deployment requires it\n\n### Local mode\n\n- Uses the built-in JavaScript evaluator shipped with the plugin\n- No `child_process` spawn is required\n- `guardrailScript` remains as a legacy compatibility field for manual smoke tests and shell tooling, but current plugin versions do not depend on it for local-mode enforcement\n\n## Tool mapping\n\nThe plugin keeps the existing OpenClaw-specific tool mappings. Common examples:\n\n- `exec`, `exec.run` -> `system.command.execute.v1`\n- `release.publish`, `git.release` -> `code.release.publish.v1`\n- `git.create_pr`, `git.merge`, `git.push` -> `code.repository.merge.v1`\n- `message` with send-family actions like `send`, `reply`, `broadcast`, `sendAttachment`, `upload-file`, or `react` -> `messaging.message.send.v1`\n- `read`, `view`, `glob` -> `data.file.read.v1`\n- `write`, `edit`, `multiedit` -> `data.file.write.v1`\n- bundle MCP tools exposed as `serverName__toolName` -> `mcp.tool.execute.v1`\n\nUnmapped tools are blocked by default. Set `allowUnmappedTools: true` only when you intentionally want the previous compatibility behavior for trusted custom skills and unmapped tools.\n\n`enforcementMode: warn` is available for conservative report-only rollout. It records completed policy denials but lets OpenClaw continue; unmapped tools, decision-integrity failures, and evaluator errors still block when `failClosed` is true. Use `enforcementMode: observe` only for adoption-first rollout: it allows policy denials and APort mapping/runtime/API failures with warnings while you tune passports and mappings. Default `enforce` blocks denied actions.\n\n## Exec behavior\n\n`exec` is OpenClaw's main shell-style tool. By default the plugin maps it to `system.command.execute.v1` and checks the underlying command against `limits[\"system.command.execute\"].allowed_commands` in the passport.\n\nIf the plugin sees a delegated guardrail invocation such as `aport-guardrail-bash.sh <tool> <json>`, it unwraps the inner tool and evaluates that policy instead of treating the wrapper as an ordinary shell command.\n\n## Troubleshooting\n\n### Plugin install failed\n\nCurrent OpenClaw releases perform install-time security scanning. This plugin is designed to pass that scan, but if installation still fails:\n\n1. Make sure you are installing the current package version\n2. Prefer the setup command `npx @aporthq/aport-agent-guardrails openclaw`\n3. For local development, install from the extension directory with `-l`\n\n### Existing source-linked config points into an old `npx` cache\n\nRe-run the setup command. The installer removes stale `plugins.load.paths` and `plugins.installs.openclaw-aport` entries so OpenClaw does not keep pointing at a transient `~/.npm/_npx/...` directory.\n\n## Notes\n\n- Current public OpenClaw integration is plugin-based\n- No upstream native guardrail-provider merge is required for this plugin path\n- If OpenClaw later ships a native provider seam, APort can support that as an additional path without replacing the current plugin install flow\n\n## Compatibility\n\n- Minimum OpenClaw host: `>=2026.4.11`, declared as `openclaw.install.minHostVersion` and `openclaw.compat.pluginApi` in `package.json`. OpenClaw enforces both when the plugin is installed.\n- Hook contract: `api.on(\"before_tool_call\", handler)`. The handler reads `event.toolName`, `event.params`, and `event.toolCallId`, honors `ctx.abortSignal` in API mode, and returns `{}` to allow or `{ block: true, blockReason }` to deny. It never returns `params` or `requireApproval`.\n- Last reviewed against OpenClaw v2026.9.5 source and the 2026.8.1 through 2026.9.6 release notes. No hook, payload, or manifest renames affected this plugin.\n- OpenClaw 2026.9.3 and later require Node 24.16+ (24.x) or 26.1+.
