The dashboard's **Connect → Workflows** tab mirrors the same bodies\nverbatim for agents that don't yet support MCP prompts (Aider et al.) — copy-paste path.\n\n## What's covered\n\nEvery endpoint in `/api/v1/...` is callable. The MCP server surfaces those problem responses verbatim so the agent can\nexplain to the user what scope is missing.\n\n## Security model — not a token-passthrough proxy\n\nThe MCP [security best-practices spec](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/specification/2025-06-18/basic/security_best_practices)\nforbids MCP servers from accepting tokens that weren't issued specifically for them\n(\"token passthrough\"). This server is **not** a passthrough: the `arglog_pat_…` bearer\ntoken is a first-party credential issued by Arguslog (`api.arguslog.org`) and validated\nby the Arguslog API as its intended audience. The MCP server (`mcp.arguslog.org`) and\nthe API live in the same trust boundary — one operator, one user-issued credential, one\naudience.\n\nIn practice that means:\n\n- The PAT is **audience-bound** to the Arguslog API — it has no meaning on any third\n  party. There's no downstream service the MCP server impersonates the user against.\n- **Scopes are enforced at the API**, not by the MCP server. The MCP server is a thin\n  fan-out of the REST surface; a `releases:read` PAT calling a write tool gets `403`\n  from the API and the error flows back through the tool result with `isError: true`.\n- The hosted endpoint runs in **stateless mode** (`sessionIdGenerator: undefined`) —\n  no MCP session ids exist, sidestepping session-hijack attack vectors entirely.\n- The Bearer token never traverses any shared in-memory state between requests: each\n  `POST /mcp` builds a one-shot `ArguslogClient` whose lifetime equals the response.\n  Rate-limit keys are `sha256(pat).slice(0,16)`, never the raw PAT.\n\nIf you self-host with `ARGUSLOG_API_URL` pointing at a private Arguslog instance, the\nsame model applies — the PAT you issue from your dashboard is bound to your API. The\nMCP server is just a tool-shaped view of an API the user can already call directly.\n\n## Browser-safe contract (`@arguslog/mcp-server/contract`)\n\nIf you're building a browser extension, a Vite/Webpack web app, or anything else that\nneeds the same tool catalog + types this server uses *without* dragging in the MCP\nserver's Node-only transport, import from the `/contract` subpath:\n\n```ts\nimport {\n  CURATED_TOOLS,\n  OPENAPI_TOOLS,\n  WORKFLOWS,\n  PACKAGE_VERSION,\n  type OpenApiTool,\n  type McpToolDefinition,\n} from '@arguslog/mcp-server/contract';\n```\n\nWhat ships through `/contract`:\n\n- **Types** — `OpenApiTool`, `OpenApiToolParam`, `ToolAnnotations`, `McpToolDefinition`.\n  Compile-time only, zero runtime cost.\n- **Tool catalog** — `OPENAPI_TOOLS` (the full auto-generated list — 63+ tools) and\n  `CURATED_TOOLS` (the hand-curated, LLM-friendly subset). Plain data; both safe to\n  `JSON.stringify` / `structuredClone`.\n- **Workflows** — `WORKFLOWS` (canned prompt recipes — triage_loop, release_postmortem,\n  regression_check, investigate_issue).\n- **Identity** — `PACKAGE_NAME` and `PACKAGE_VERSION`, synced from this package's\n  `package.json` by the codegen pipeline.\n\nWhat's NOT in `/contract` (deliberately):\n\n- `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/*` transports — server-only.\n- The `executeTool` / `buildToolResult` runtime — reads `process.env`.\n- `node:crypto` HMAC helpers from the HTTP transport.\n\nThe main `@arguslog/mcp-server` entry is the **CLI server**; importing it in a browser\nbundle is unsupported and will likely fail at build time (Node-only externals).\n\nA CI test (`contract-browser-safety.test.ts`) scans the emitted `dist/contract.js` for\nany Node-only requires and fails the build if a drift slips in.
