planning** when you ask for it: artifacts\nunder `.atelier/`, a ledger per epic, optional mirrors into your agent's native\nplan files, and a short review pass after implementation.\n\nNothing happens until you opt in. `/atelier ...` (or explicitly asking to use\nAtelier-Kit) turns the protocol on; until then there are no `.atelier/` writes,\nno skills loaded, no gates. Hosts that install native plan hooks can also let\nthe host's `/plan ...` mode bootstrap a V2 epic and receive framework nudges\nwhile the agent writes the same `.atelier/epics/<epic>/` artifacts.\n\nWhile an epic is active, treat these two files as authoritative:\n\n```text\n.atelier/active.json\n.atelier/epics/<epic-slug>/state.json\n```\n\nAn epic walks through discovery, synthesis and design (depending on mode),\nplanning, then `planned`. After `planned`, coding happens the same way it would\nwithout Atelier—the agent uses its usual workflow. Review at the end compares\nwhat shipped with what was planned.\n\nVocabulary you will see:\n\n- **epic**: the initiative you are planning end to end\n- **question**: first artifact; research should not run on boilerplate questions alone\n- **task**: one chunk of the protocol (questions, a research track, planning, etc.)\n- **slice**: a vertical cut inside `plan.md` with scope, acceptance checks and validation\n\n## Plannotator\n\nAtelier-Kit keeps the CLI small. When\n[Plannotator](https://github.com/backnotprop/plannotator) is installed, the\nagent uses it directly as a review surface for planning artifacts. When your agent reads plans\nbetter from its own location, `atelier export-plan` copies there—mirrors are for\nconvenience, not authority.
