Agents shell out to it (or `import` it) so control-flow\nwork — enumerating steps, resolving models, building/validating the DAG, matching\ntasks to pipelines, routing graph pipelines, driving the whole run loop, and\nemitting journal events — costs **near-zero LLM tokens** instead of being done\nin an agent's context.\n\n## Install\n\n```bash\nbun add -g @baizor/pipeline # or: npm i -g @baizor/pipeline\npipeline --help\n```\n\nThe [Pipeline plugin for Claude Code](https://github.com/IvanMurzak/pipeline-claude)\n**requires** this package: since plugin v0.93.0 the plugin ships no code of its\nown, and its skills, agents and hooks all run `pipeline` subcommands.\n\n## Runtime\n\nWritten in TypeScript and run directly with **Bun** — the published `bin` points\nat `src/cli.ts`, so there is no build step and no dependency to install. From a\ncheckout:\n\n```bash\nbun src/cli.ts [options]\n```\n\nFor embedding in another local project you can either import the library API or\nproduce a Node-targeted bundle:\n\n```bash\nbun run build # → dist/cli.mjs (Node-compatible ESM)\n```\n\n**Supported Bun versions: `>= 1.3.14` (`engines.bun`), tested on `1.3.14` and\n`1.4.0`.** Because the published `bin` is source, this CLI runs on *your* Bun,\nnot one we ship — so CI pins both ends of that range explicitly and crosses them\nwith Linux and Windows. 1.3.14 is a hard floor rather than a preference: v2\n`pipeline.yml` parsing uses Bun's built-in `Bun.YAML`, which older releases do\nnot have. A manifest's `runner: standalone` is what selects\n`--executor claude-sdk` by default; passing `--executor` explicitly on the\ncommand line always wins.\n\n**The guarantee, stated once because it holds in every one of the four:** what\nruns next is decided by `pipeline next` — always, in every mode. `session` and\n`manager` call it from inside a live Claude Code session; `driver` and\n`standalone` call the identical engine directly from `pipeline drive`'s own\nprocess. No mode ever has a model decide control flow — only how faithfully a\nmodel *calls into* the engine differs between modes, which is exactly why the\nmode you pick is a reliability decision, not a behavioural one.\n\n**Hosting is a location, not a mode.** All four modes above are things you can\nrun locally. On a machine we host, only `standalone` is possible: there is no\nuser subscription and no local Claude Code install for `session`, `manager` or\n`driver`'s subprocess to run against.\n\n**`type: script` steps sit outside this table entirely.** The command layer\nexecutes them in-process, identically, in all four modes — the mode question\ndoes not apply to them.\n\n**v1 → v2 naming.** A v1 `PIPELINE.md`'s `runner:` frontmatter carried only\ntwo values, and the CLI still reads both: `manager` is unchanged, and\n**`runner: headless` is read as `driver`** — the same mode under its new name,\nnot a different one. Both spellings still parse in a v1 pipeline; only\n`headless` as the *mode's name* is retired.\n\n## Commands\n\n### `clone` — scaffold a ready-made pipeline into your project\n\n```bash\nbun src/cli.ts clone [--force] [--dir ] [--list] [--json]\n```\n\nCopies a bundled, ready-made pipeline **template** into\n`./.pipeline//` (relative to the current directory, or `--dir\n`) — the local-first onboarding entry point: install `@baizor/pipeline`,\nthen `pipeline clone ` drops a working pipeline you can run and adapt.\n\nTemplates ship **inside** this package (`apps/pipeline-cli/templates//`)\nand are resolved relative to the CLI's own source, so `clone` behaves the same\nfrom a plugin checkout and an npm/bun install. `--list` shows what's available;\nan unknown name errors and lists the choices. The command **refuses to\noverwrite** an existing `./.pipeline//` unless `--force` is passed\n(which replaces the folder entirely — no stale files survive).\n\nExit codes: `0` cloned (or `--list`) · `1` target exists without `--force`, or\nthe copy failed · `2` usage (no name, unknown template, bad flag).\n\n> **Adding a template:** drop a folder under `templates//` (a valid\n> `PIPELINE.md` + a `steps/` folder — mirror `example-minimal`) and register it\n> in `src/lib/templates.ts`. The test suite validates that every registered\n> template plans cleanly and ships in the npm tarball.\n\n### `plan` — compute the execution plan\n\n```bash\nbun src/cli.ts plan --root [--default-model ]\n```\n\nReads `PIPELINE.md` + every `steps/**/*.md` frontmatter (never bodies) and prints\na compact JSON plan: `mode` (sequential | parallel), `isolation`, resolved\n`default_model`, the ordered `steps` (each with `step_id`, effective `model`,\n`depends_on`), the DAG `layers` (parallel only), plus `errors` and `warnings`.\n\nExit code is `1` when `errors` is non-empty (caller should halt), `0` otherwise.\n\nA `--root` with **no pipeline in it** is refused rather than planned: a path that\ndoes not exist, and a directory holding no `pipeline.yml`, no `PIPELINE.md` and\nno `steps/*.md`, each print a plan carrying that single error and nothing else —\nnever a default-populated plan for a pipeline that is not there.\n\n**Mode gate:** a pipeline runs in parallel/DAG mode **only** when `PIPELINE.md`\ndeclares `execution: parallel`. Steps that declare `depends-on` without that flag\nrun sequentially and emit a warning. This keeps the common (sequential) case at\nO(1) reads on a run start.\n\n### `migrate --to-manifest` — turn a v1 pipeline into a `pipeline.yml`\n\n```bash\nbun src/cli.ts migrate --to-manifest [--root ] [--dry-run] [--json] [--force]\n```\n\nGenerates the v2 manifest for a v1 pipeline: ONE file that says everything,\nreplacing `PIPELINE.md` frontmatter + every step's frontmatter + a `## Graph`\nsection + the filename order. Prints the old→new step-name map — a v1 step id\nthat was only a filename stem loses its ordering prefix (`01-implement` →\n`implement`), because the manifest's step list now carries the order.\n\nIt is generated from the computed **plan**, not from the source files: the plan\nis what the v1 walk actually decided, so emitting from it is the only way to be\nsure the manifest says what the pipeline already does. The gate before writing\nis therefore **equivalence, not lint** — the manifest is parsed back, re-planned,\nand every field that decides what runs must match. A migration that produces a\nvalid pipeline which is not *this* pipeline writes nothing.\n\nIt refuses rather than guess:\n\n- an existing `pipeline.yml` is never overwritten (pass `--force`),\n- a v1 pipeline that does not plan cleanly is not translated,\n- anything a v2 manifest cannot express — a script step's inline `command:`, a\n `(required)` variable, `finalize:`, `delete_branches:` — is named, and\n aborts the write,\n- **`runner: driver`** (v1's `runner: headless` — see\n [the four `runner` modes](#the-four-runner-modes)) is a line this migration\n does not *emit* yet, even though the v2 manifest itself can say it: the\n write still aborts, naming `runner: driver` as the line to add by hand\n afterwards.\n\n`--dry-run` still shows what the rest becomes.\n\n`PIPELINE.md` is left in place: it is prose for humans afterwards and is no\nlonger parsed. The `## Next` sections in the step files are dead too — the\nmanifest decides the order.\n\n### `drive` — run the `driver` / `standalone` modes (EXPERIMENTAL)\n\n```bash\nbun src/cli.ts drive --root --run-id --start \n [--default-model ] [--model = ...]\n [--default-effort ] [--effort = ...]\n [--var NAME=value ...] [--vars-file ]\n [--answer | --answer-file ]\n [--task | --task-file ]\n [--executor ] [--executor-cmd
