The result is Jed-compatible.\n\n\n## Fork Notes\n\nThis is a maintained fork of [`po2json`](https://github.com/mikeedwards/po2json), published as\n[`@baladins/po2json`](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@baladins/po2json) so that the updates below are\ninstallable today. It is meant to stay a drop-in replacement, and will be deprecated if and when these\nchanges land upstream.\n\n\n## Getting Started\nInstall the module with: `npm install @baladins/po2json`\n\n### As a library\n```\nvar po2json = require('@baladins/po2json');\n```\n\n### As an executable\n```\npo2json translation.po translation.json\n```\n__If you are using Jed >= 1.1.0, be sure to specify that format specifically.__\n```\npo2json translation.po translation.json -f jed1.x\n```\n\n## Documentation\n\n### Methods\n\npo2json has 3 methods, all of which take exactly the same options. The main function is `parse` which actually does the parsing to JSON. The 2 others - `parseFile` and `parseFileSync` are convenience functions to directly read PO data from a file and convert it to JSON.\n\nParse a PO buffer to JSON\n\n* `po2json.parse(buf[, options])`\n\t* `buf` - a _po_ file as a Buffer or an unicode string.\n\t* `options` - an optional object with the following possible parameters:\n\t\t* `fuzzy` Whether to include fuzzy translation in JSON or not. Should be either `true` or `false`. Defaults to `false`.\n\t\t* `stringify` If `true`, returns a JSON string. Otherwise returns a plain Javascript object. Defaults to `false`.\n\t\t* `pretty` If `true`, the resulting JSON string will be pretty-printed. Has no effect when `stringify` is `false`. Defaults to `false`\n\t\t* `format` Defaults to `raw`.\n\t\t\t* `raw` produces a \"raw\" JSON output\n\t\t\t* `jed` produces an output that is 100% compatible with Jed >= 1.1.0\n\t\t\t* `jedold` produces an output that is 100% compatible with Jed < 1.1.0\n\t\t\t* `mf` produces simple key:value output.\n\t\t* `domain` - the domain the messages will be wrapped inside. Only has effect if `format: 'jed'`.\n\t\t* `fallback-to-msgid` If `true`, for those entries that would be omitted (fuzzy entries without the fuzzy flag) and for those\n\t\tthat are empty, the msgid will be used as translation in the json file. If the entry is plural, msgid_plural will be used for\n\t\tmsgstr[1]. This means that this option makes sense only for those languages that have nplurals=2.\n\t\t* `mfOptions` Options handed to [gettext-to-messageformat](https://github.com/eemeli/gettext-to-messageformat). Only has\n\t\teffect if `format: 'mf'`. Defaults to `{}`, anything given here wins over the options po2json sets itself.\n\t\t* `escape-params` Whether `{`, `}`, `#` and `\\` are escaped so that MessageFormat reads them as literals. Set it to\n\t\t`false` to write a `{{error}}` placeholder out as-is instead of `\\{\\{error\\}\\}`. Only has effect if `format: 'mf'`.\n\t\tDefaults to `true`. Turn it off for consumers that read the JSON as plain strings and use braces for their own\n\t\ttranslation parameters, such as [ngx-translate](https://github.com/ngx-translate/core).\n\n#### Braces, hashes and backslashes (`format: 'mf'`)\n\ngettext-to-messageformat escapes `{`, `}`, `#` and `\\` so that MessageFormat reads them as literals, which turns a\n`{{error}}` placeholder into `\\{\\{error\\}\\}` (issue #77). `escape-params: false` drops that one rule while keeping the `%s`,\n`%d`, `%(name)s` and `%%` conversion:\n\n```\npo2json.parseFileSync('messages.po', { format: 'mf', 'escape-params': false });\n```\n\nNote that a literal `#` inside a plural is then read by MessageFormat as the plural number, so leave the escaping on when\nthe JSON is handed to a MessageFormat compiler. The replacement list behind the option is exported as\n`po2json.mfReplacements` to build a list of your own from, for use with `mfOptions.replacements`.\n\nParse a PO file to JSON\n\n* `po2json.parseFile(fileName[,options], cb)`\n\t* `fileName` - path to the po file\n\t* `options` - same as for `po2json.parse`\n\t* `cb` - a function that receives 2 arguments: `err` and `jsonData`\n\nParse a PO file to JSON (synchronous)\n\n* `po2json.parseFileSync(fileName[, options])`\n\t* `fileName` - path to the po file\n\t* `options` - same as for `po2json.parse`\n\n### Command Line Arguments\n\npo2json in command-line parametrization support added to allow override\ndefault options.\n\n* --pretty, -p: same as pretty = true in function options\n* --fuzzy, -F: same as fuzzy = true in function options\n* --format, -f: Output format (raw, jed, jedold, or mf)\n* --full-mf, -M: return full messageformat output (instead of only translations)\n* --domain, -d: same as domain in function options\n* --fallback-to-msgid': 'use msgid if translation is missing (nplurals must match)\n* --no-escape-params: same as 'escape-params' = false in function options\n\nNote: `'format': 'mf'` means the json format used by messageFormatter in github.com/SlexAxton/messageformat.js\nand `jedold` refers to Jed formats below 1.1.0\n\n## Examples\n\n### Basic usage with PO data as a buffer/string\n```\nvar po2json = require('@baladins/po2json'),\n fs = require('fs');\nfs.readFile('messages.po', function (err, buffer) {\n var jsonData = po2json.parse(buffer);\n // do something interesting ...\n});\n```\n\n### Parse a PO file directly - Asynchronous Usage\n```\nvar po2json = require('@baladins/po2json');\npo2json.parseFile('messages.po', function (err, jsonData) {\n // do something interesting ...\n});\n```\n\n### Parse a PO file directly - Synchronous Usage\n```\nvar po2json = require('@baladins/po2json');\nvar jsonData = '';\ntry {\n jsonData = po2json.parseFileSync('messages.po');\n // do something interesting ...\n} catch (e) {}\n```\n\n### Parse a PO file to messageformat format\n`messageformat@2` was renamed to [`@messageformat/core`](https://messageformat.github.io/), which\ncompiles one message at a time instead of a whole object, so translations are walked by hand:\n\n```\nvar po2json = require('@baladins/po2json'),\n MessageFormat = require('@messageformat/core');\n\nfunction compileAll(mf, translations) {\n return Object.keys(translations).reduce(function (messages, key) {\n var message = translations[key];\n // nested objects are msgctxt contexts\n messages[key] = typeof message === 'string' ? mf.compile(message) : compileAll(mf, message);\n return messages;\n }, {});\n}\n\npo2json.parseFile('es.po', { format: 'mf' }, function (err, translations) {\n var es = function (n) {\n return (n==1 ? 'p0' : n%10>=2 && n%10<=4 && (n%100<10 || n%100>=20) ? 'p1' : 'p2');\n };\n es.cardinals = [ 'p0', 'p1', 'p2' ];\n var mf = new MessageFormat(es);\n var i18n = compileAll(mf, translations);\n});\n```\n\nThe locale is taken from the name of the plural function, so name it after the locale it describes.\n\n### Parse a PO file to messageformat format using the full format\n```\nvar po2json = require('@baladins/po2json'),\n MessageFormat = require('@messageformat/core');\n\npo2json.parseFile('messages.po', { format: 'mf', fullMF: true }, function (err, jsonData) {\n var mf = new MessageFormat(jsonData.pluralFunction);\n var i18n = compileAll(mf, jsonData.translations);\n});\n```\n\n#### Still on messageformat@2?\nThe output is unchanged, only the calls into messageformat differ. `pluralFunction` carries both the\n`cardinal` (messageformat@2) and `cardinals` (`@messageformat/core`) plural category lists, so the\nlegacy form keeps working:\n\n```\nvar MessageFormat = require('messageformat'); // messageformat@2\n\npo2json.parseFile('messages.po', { format: 'mf', fullMF: true }, function (err, jsonData) {\n var mf = new MessageFormat(\n { [jsonData.headers.language]: jsonData.pluralFunction }\n );\n var i18n = mf.compile( jsonData.translations );\n});\n```\n\nNote that `messageformat@4` is *not* a newer `messageformat@2`: it is a polyfill for the upcoming\n`Intl.MessageFormat` and does not read the format produced here.\n\n### Parse a PO file to Jed >= 1.1.0 format\n```\nvar po2json = require('@baladins/po2json'),\n Jed = require('jed');\npo2json.parseFile('messages.po', { format: 'jed' }, function (err, jsonData) {\n var i18n = new Jed( jsonData );\n});\n```\n\n### Parse a PO file to Jed < 1.1.0 format\n__If you are using an older version of Jed, be sure to specify this format specifically.__\n```\nvar po2json = require('@baladins/po2json'),\n Jed = require('jed');\npo2json.parseFile('messages.po', { format: 'jedold' }, function (err, jsonData) {\n var i18n = new Jed( jsonData );\n});\n```\n\n### Running tests\n```\nnpm test\n```\n\n## Contributing\nIn lieu of a formal styleguide, take care to maintain the existing coding style. Add unit tests for any new or changed functionality.
