The installer registers\nthe `virtual-architect` MCP server with your local `claude` CLI and drops a\nSessionStart hook into the project so every Claude Code session in that\ndirectory can call Virtual Architect tools and starts with a short usage\nplaybook in context. It runs entirely on your machine and makes no network\ncall to discover or download anything at install time.\n\n## Install\n\n```\nnpx @bitflower/va-mcp install \\\n    --url https://va.example.com/mcp \\\n    --api-key va_live_<your-key>\n```\n\nTargets the current directory by default; pass `--project-dir <path>` to\ntarget another project. Run `install` with no flags to be prompted\ninteractively (the API key is masked as you type).\n\nFor reproducible installs (CI, shared setup scripts), pin a version:\n\n```\nnpx @bitflower/va-mcp@0.1.0 install --url <url> --api-key <key>\n```\n\n## Uninstall\n\n```\nnpx @bitflower/va-mcp uninstall\n```\n\nDeregisters the MCP server and removes the SessionStart hook entry. The\nhook script file is left on disk for you to delete manually.\n\n## Help and version\n\n```\nnpx @bitflower/va-mcp --help\nnpx @bitflower/va-mcp --version\n```\n\n## Requirements\n\n- The `claude` CLI on your `$PATH` — <https://docs.claude.com/en/docs/claude-code>\n- Node.js 18 or newer\n- A Virtual Architect deployment URL and API key\n\n## gitignore precondition\n\nIf the target directory is a git repository, add\n`.claude/settings.local.json` to your `.gitignore` **before** running the\ninstaller — it refuses otherwise, so per-machine hook configuration never\ngets committed:\n\n```\ngrep -qxF '.claude/settings.local.json' .gitignore || echo '.claude/settings.local.json' >> .gitignore\n```\n\nThe check is deliberately conservative: it recognizes only an exact-path or\ndirectory-prefix entry — glob patterns (e.g. `.claude/*`), `!`-negation lines,\nand nested `.gitignore` files are **not** evaluated. The check is skipped for\nnon-git directories. In a monorepo, put\nthe entry in the **project-local** `.gitignore` (the one in the target\ndirectory), not the repo-root `.gitignore` — the installer reads only the\ntarget directory's file.\n\n## No catalog lookup or remote calls at install time\n\nThe installer performs no catalog lookup or remote download. It talks only\nto your local `claude` CLI and writes into the target project, so it works\nwithout outbound network access (beyond `npx` fetching the package itself).\n\n## Notes\n\n- **Idempotent:** re-running `install` with the same arguments produces the\n  same on-disk state and does not duplicate the hook entry.\n- **Windows:** use WSL.
