Improvements made here propagate outward with `cycle update`, and `cycle check`\nreports when an installed copy has drifted.\n\n## Why this exists\n\nThe same pipeline was copy-pasted into three repositories and diverged in all three. Hand-carried\nfixes usually did not reach the other copies, so bugs and stale assumptions remained fixed in one\nplace and broken in another. The divergence was not the problem; **silent** divergence was.\n\nThe two features that matter most are therefore:\n\n- `cycle update` propagates reviewed pipeline improvements.\n- `cycle check` makes local and upstream drift visible.\n\n## How it works\n\nEvery repository-specific value lives in a generated binding file, leaving the shared skill\ntemplates portable:\n\n- **Backends** bind tracker operations such as issue reads and PR creation. GitHub is the backend\n available today. See [Backends](docs/BACKENDS.md).\n- **Harnesses** describe which coding tool runs the skills and where that tool discovers them. See\n [Harnesses](docs/HARNESSES.md).\n- **Overlays** hold the irreducibly repository-specific guidance a template cannot generalize,\n such as reviewer routing and scout lenses. See [Authoring](docs/AUTHORING.md).\n- **Drift detection** records provenance in every rendered file. `cycle check` distinguishes a\n locally edited render from a render whose source template has moved upstream.\n\n## Quick start (recommended)\n\nAsk the coding agent already working in your repository:\n\n> Install the-cycle for durable use, then set it up in this repository. Before changing anything\n> under my home directory, show me the exact paths and ask for approval. Use a clean clone at\n> `~/code/the-cycle`, run its `install.sh`, verify `cycle --version`, then run `/cycle-setup` here\n> through its operational readiness receipt. Do not hand-edit rendered harness skill trees.\n\nThe durable clone keeps the command and personal setup skill available for later checks and\nupdates. Setup is complete only when `/cycle-setup` reports **READY** and its exact `.cycle/` and\nconfigured harness files are committed together. The first everyday command is then `/next`.\n\nSee [Installing the-cycle](docs/INSTALLING.md) for the agent handoff, manual alternative, one-off\n`npx` use, and the exact update procedure for one or several computers.\n\n## Profiles\n\nMachinery is opt-in: a repository takes on a lane when it earns it.\n\n| Profile | Skills |\n| --- | --- |\n| `lean` | cycle · implement · review · patch · done · next · intake · scout · burndown · dep-update · deploy-test · deploy-prod |\n| `standard` | + unblock · wrap-up · pre-compact |\n| `full` | + nightly · fan-out · cover · flake |\n\n## Backends\n\nThe tracker sits behind a verb vocabulary (`issue view`, `pr create`, `merge guard`, and so on).\nGitHub issues and labels are the only bound tracker today. Status is a `status:*` label on the\nissue, so the open issue list is the board.\n\nAdding another tracker means implementing the backend contract, not rewriting every skill. The\ncomplete vocabulary and its required semantics are documented in [Backends](docs/BACKENDS.md).\n\n## Harnesses\n\nThe configured harnesses each receive a complete, independent skill tree.\n\n| | Claude Code | Codex CLI | Copilot CLI | OpenCode | Pi |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| skills discovered at | `.claude/skills/
/SKILL.md` | `.agents/skills/
/SKILL.md` | `.github/skills/
/SKILL.md` | `.opencode/skills/
/SKILL.md` | `.pi/skills/
/SKILL.md` |\n| structured questions | `AskUserQuestion` | direct chat | `ask_user` | `question` | plain chat |\n| parallel subagents | Agent tool | subagents | task tool | task tool | none by design |\n\nSee [Harnesses](docs/HARNESSES.md) for the capability contract and instructions for adding a\nharness.\n\n## Requirements\n\nNode.js 20 or newer, git, and bash for the durable installer. The CLI has no runtime dependencies\nand no build step. `gh` must be authenticated for tracker operations; rendering, linting, and\ndrift checks work offline.\n\n## Documentation\n\n- [Installing](docs/INSTALLING.md) — recommended durable setup, one-off use, updates across\n computers, and existing-pipeline reconciliation.\n- [Development](docs/DEVELOPMENT.md) — local gates, generated-source rules, and repository layout.\n- [Behavioral evaluation](docs/EVALUATION.md) — compare model behavior against two pipeline\n revisions in isolated fixtures.\n- [Authoring](docs/AUTHORING.md) — write templates and overlays and propagate their changes.\n- [Backends](docs/BACKENDS.md) — tracker verbs and backend semantics.\n- [Harnesses](docs/HARNESSES.md) — harness fields, capabilities, and discovery paths.\n- [Patterns](docs/PATTERNS.md) — reviewer-agent, hook, and scoped-instruction patterns.\n- [Releasing](docs/RELEASING.md) — package boundaries, preflight, and the explicit publish gate.\n","readmeFilename":"README.md"}
