Accepts:\n\n- **String array**: Simple branch names\n- **Object array**: Conditional or cascading backmerges with `{from: \"source\", to: \"target\"}` format. First, `main` is backmerged into `staging`\n2. Then, `staging` is backmerged into `develop`\n\nThis creates a cascade: `main` → `staging` → `develop`\n\n**How cascading works:**\n\nThe plugin tracks which branches have been backmerged to during the current release workflow. Useful for modifying files for the development branch (e.g., updating version files, adding dev suffixes).\n\n**Important:** Plugins must stage their changes to Git (`git add`) for inclusion in the back-merge commit.\n\n**Example:**\n\n```json\n{\n  \"plugins\": [\n    [\n      \"@semantic-release/exec\",\n      {\n        \"successCmd\": \"npm version ${nextRelease.version}-dev --no-git-tag-version && git add package.json\"\n      }\n    ]\n  ]\n}\n```\n\n### `message`\n\nCustomize the commit message for back-merge commits using [Lodash template](https://lodash.com/docs#template) syntax.\n\n**Available variables:**\n\n| Variable      | Description                                               |\n| ------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- |\n| `branch`      | Release branch object (see structure above)               |\n| `lastRelease` | Previous release (`version`, `gitTag`, `gitHead`)         |\n| `nextRelease` | Current release (`version`, `gitTag`, `gitHead`, `notes`) |\n\n**Example:**\n\n```json\n{\n  \"message\": \"chore: merge v${nextRelease.version} into develop [skip ci]\"\n}\n```\n\n**Tip:** Include `[skip ci]` to prevent triggering another CI build.\n\n### `forcePush`\n\nForce-push the back-merge to the development branch.\n\n⚠️ **Warning:** This will overwrite commits in the development branch that aren't in production. Use with extreme caution!\n\n```json\n{\n  \"forcePush\": true\n}\n```\n\n### `clearWorkspace`\n\nStash uncommitted changes before attempting the backmerge.\n\n```json\n{\n  \"clearWorkspace\": true\n}\n```\n\n### `restoreWorkspace`\n\nRestore stashed changes after the backmerge completes. Only meaningful with `clearWorkspace: true`.\n\n```json\n{\n  \"clearWorkspace\": true,\n  \"restoreWorkspace\": true\n}\n```\n\n### `ignorePaths`\n\nA list of paths to **exclude** from a back-merge. After the merge/rebase, each\nlisted path is restored to the **target branch's** pre-back-merge state, so any\nchanges to it on the source branch are never carried over. Works with both the\n`merge` and `rebase` strategies.\n\nThis is useful for files that must diverge per branch and would otherwise be\nclobbered by the back-merge — typically version pins or release matrices that\nhold different values on `staging` vs `develop`.\n\n```json\n{\n  \"backmergeBranches\": [\n    { \"from\": \"main\", \"to\": \"staging\" },\n    {\n      \"from\": \"staging\",\n      \"to\": \"develop\",\n      \"ignorePaths\": [\"version-matrix.yaml.jinja\"]\n    }\n  ],\n  \"backmergeStrategy\": \"merge\"\n}\n```\n\nIn this example, `version-matrix.yaml.jinja` is excluded only while\nback-merging `staging` into `develop`; it is still included in the `main` to\n`staging` back-merge.\n\nThe top-level `ignorePaths` option remains supported and applies to every\nback-merge. A route-specific `ignorePaths` value takes precedence for that\nroute. Use an empty route-specific array to disable the global exclusions for\none route:\n\n```json\n{\n  \"ignorePaths\": [\"version-matrix.yaml.jinja\"],\n  \"backmergeBranches\": [\n    {\n      \"from\": \"main\",\n      \"to\": \"staging\",\n      \"ignorePaths\": []\n    },\n    { \"from\": \"staging\", \"to\": \"develop\" }\n  ]\n}\n```\n\n**Behaviour:**\n\n- Each matched file is reset **whole** to the target branch's version (not line-merged).\n- Files that exist on the release branch but **not** on the target are removed, so the result matches the target exactly.\n- Path specs (including globs, e.g. `\"values/**\"`) that match nothing are skipped — they never abort the back-merge.\n\n### `mergeMode`\n\nWhen using `backmergeStrategy: \"merge\"`, determines conflict resolution strategy.\n\n**Options:**\n\n- `none` (default): No automatic resolution (fails on conflicts)\n- `ours`: Prefer development branch changes\n- `theirs`: Prefer production branch changes\n\n```json\n{\n  \"backmergeStrategy\": \"merge\",\n  \"mergeMode\": \"theirs\"\n}\n```\n\n### `fastForwardMode`\n\nWhen using `backmergeStrategy: \"merge\"`, controls fast-forward behavior.\n\n**Options:**\n\n- `none` (default): Same as `ff`\n- `ff`: Fast-forward when possible, merge commit otherwise\n- `no-ff`: Always create a merge commit\n- `ff-only`: Only fast-forward, fail if not possible\n\n```json\n{\n  \"backmergeStrategy\": \"merge\",\n  \"fastForwardMode\": \"no-ff\"\n}\n```\n\n### `fetchDelay`\n\nDelay (in milliseconds) after pushing to the remote repository before fetching to update local branch references. This allows remote git providers (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket) additional time to fully process and synchronize the push operation.\n\n**Why you might need this:**\n- Remote git providers may have a small delay between when a push completes and when those changes are available for subsequent fetch operations\n- This is **critical for cascading backmerges** where one backmerge's push must be fully visible to the remote before the next backmerge fetches\n- Network latency, CDN propagation, and API processing can cause timing issues\n- Without this delay, cascading backmerges may not include all expected commits\n\n**Default:** `3000` (3 seconds)\n\n**Examples:**\n\nDisable delay for local repositories or faster CI:\n```json\n{\n  \"fetchDelay\": 0\n}\n```\n\nIncrease delay for slower networks or remote providers:\n```json\n{\n  \"fetchDelay\": 5000\n}\n```\n\n**Note:** The default 3-second delay provides a reasonable buffer for most remote git providers. The next release will attempt backmerge again\n\n### Stale Workspace Issues\n\nIf you encounter \"unstaged changes\" errors:\n\n- Set `clearWorkspace: true` to automatically stash changes\n- Set `restoreWorkspace: true` if you need those changes restored\n\n### CI/CD Pipeline Loops\n\nEnsure your commit message includes `[skip ci]` or equivalent to prevent infinite release loops.\n\n### Cascading Backmerge Issues\n\nIf cascading backmerges (e.g., `main` → `staging` → `develop`) are not including all expected commits:\n\n**Symptoms:**\n- Commits from the first branch (e.g., `main`) don't appear in the final branch (e.g., `develop`)\n- Merge messages reference the correct branch but history is incomplete\n- Integration tests show missing commits in cascade chains\n\n**Solutions:**\n\n1. **Increase fetchDelay**: The default 3-second delay may not be sufficient for some remote providers\n   ```json\n   {\n     \"fetchDelay\": 5000\n   }\n   ```\n\n2. **For local testing**: Set `fetchDelay: 0` since local git repositories don't have synchronization delays\n   ```json\n   {\n     \"fetchDelay\": 0\n   }\n   ```\n\n3. **Check remote configuration**: Ensure your git remote is properly configured as `origin`\n   ```bash\n   git remote -v\n   ```\n\n**Technical Note:** The plugin uses `git fetch origin` to update remote-tracking branches.
