review framework with Claude and Codex adapters.","maintainers":[{"name":"cmertdalli","email":"cmertdalli@gmail.com"}],"readme":"# PoliSci Review\r\n\r\nA structured, LLM-agnostic pre-submission audit for political science manuscripts. Use it for a systematic review pass before circulation or submission.\r\n\r\nPoliSci Review uses journal-aware personas, stage-aware standards, and evidence-grounded issue reporting to check your manuscript across nine modules — from contribution and theory to design, transparency, and journal fit. It works with Claude, Codex, or any LLM that can follow structured instructions.\r\n\r\n## Who This Is For\r\n\r\n- PhD students preparing articles for submission\r\n- Postdocs and early-career faculty wanting a structured pre-submission check\r\n- Anyone circulating a working paper who wants a more systematic review before circulation\r\n- Pre-submission workshops looking for a systematic review framework\r\n\r\n## What It Checks\r\n\r\nThe review battery runs nine modules:\r\n\r\n1. **Contribution and literature positioning** — is the contribution real, specific, and proportional?\r\n2. **Writing, structure, and framing** — does the paper read well and reach its point quickly?\r\n3. **Internal consistency and citation integrity** — do claims, numbers, and references match throughout?\r\n4. **Theory, concepts, and scope conditions** — is the theory coherent, are mechanisms argued, and are scope conditions bounded?\r\n5. **Measurement and data construction** — do operationalizations match concepts, and is data provenance clear?\r\n6. **Design and identification** — does the design support the inferential claim?\r\n7. **Track-specific technical audit** — are methods, quant, formal, qual, or mixed-methods specifics handled correctly?\r\n8. **Transparency, reproducibility, ethics, and AI-use policy** — is the paper audit-ready and policy-compliant?\r\n9. **Journal fit and Reviewer #2 assessment** — would this survive review at the target journal?\r\n\r\nEvery issue includes a module label, location anchor, evidence status, journal-policy reference, and a recommended fix.\r\n\r\n## Supported Journals\r\n\r\nThe initial release supports eight journals with verified policy profiles:\r\n\r\n| Journal | Role |\r\n|---------|------|\r\n| `APSR` | Discipline-wide flagship |\r\n| `AJPS` | Methods-forward generalist |\r\n| `JOP` | Generalist, methodologically diverse |\r\n| `BJPS` | Pluralistic generalist |\r\n| `PA` | Political methodology |\r\n| `InternationalSecurity` | IR and security flagship |\r\n| `JCR` | Conflict studies flagship |\r\n| `CPS` | Comparative politics flagship |\r\n\r\nEach journal profile includes verified submission guidelines, word limits, review model, data policy, and AI-use policy where available. Source URLs and verification dates live in [`core/journal-manifest.json`](./core/journal-manifest.json).\r\n\r\n### Journal-Agnostic Mode\r\n\r\nYou do not need to target a specific journal. Running without a journal argument applies a `top-field` standard — discipline-wide best practices without journal-specific policy enforcement. This is recommended for early drafts and working papers.\r\n\r\n## Quick Start\r\n\r\nInstall the Claude adapter:\r\n\r\n```bash\r\nnpx @cmertdalli/polisci-review install claude\r\n```\r\n\r\nInstall the Codex adapter:\r\n\r\n```bash\r\nnpx @cmertdalli/polisci-review install codex\r\n```\r\n\r\nInstall both:\r\n\r\n```bash\r\nnpx @cmertdalli/polisci-review install all\r\n```\r\n\r\nInspect detected install paths:\r\n\r\n```bash\r\nnpx @cmertdalli/polisci-review doctor\r\n```\r\n\r\n## How to Use\r\n\r\n```text\r\npolisci-review [JOURNAL] [TRACK] [STAGE] [PATH]\r\n```\r\n\r\n**Tracks**: `methods`, `quant`, `formal`, `qual`, `mixed` (default: `auto`)\r\n\r\n**Stages**: `article`, `proposal`, `dissertation` (default: `auto`)\r\n\r\n**Defaults**: journal=`top-field`, track=`auto`, stage=`auto`\r\n\r\nExamples:\r\n\r\n```text\r\npolisci-review AJPS quant article manuscript.tex\r\npolisci-review CPS qual dissertation.tex\r\npolisci-review manuscript.tex # journal-agnostic, auto-detect track and stage\r\n```\r\n\r\n## Supported Manuscript Formats\r\n\r\nThe workflow is LaTeX-first. If `.tex` source exists, that is the preferred review path. It can also review:\r\n\r\n- `.docx`\r\n- `.md`\r\n- `.txt`\r\n- `.pdf` with readable text or OCR\r\n\r\nFor `.docx` and `.pdf`, support is best-effort because some runtimes cannot reliably extract text from those formats. When extraction is weak, the recommended fallback is an exported `.txt` or `.md` version. If both `.tex` and a rendered format exist, prefer `.tex`.\r\n\r\n## Output Contract\n\nWhen the runtime allows file writes, the installed skill should write two files by default:\n\n- `review-report.md` following [`core/report-template.md`](./core/report-template.md)\n- `review-report.json` following [`core/issue-schema.json`](./core/issue-schema.json)\n\nBy default these files should be written next to the main manuscript. If the environment cannot write files, the skill should return the same content in the chat and say that file output was unavailable.\n\nSample outputs live in [`examples/sample-outputs/`](./examples/sample-outputs).\n\n## Choosing a Model\r\n\r\nThe framework is model-agnostic. Claude is the default recommendation because it currently gives the strongest balance of instruction-following and long-context reading for this workflow.\r\n\r\nThat said, model performance changes fast. Before choosing a model for production use:\r\n\r\n1. Check the [benchmark viewer](https://petergpt.github.io/bullshit-benchmark/viewer/index.v2.html) for current rankings. Models with high \"Clear Pushback\" rates are better at identifying real problems rather than inventing issues.\r\n2. Prefer models with strong instruction-following and long-context capabilities. Check the benchmark link above for current leaders; specific model names go stale quickly.\r\n3. Test with your own manuscripts. No benchmark replaces domain-specific evaluation.\r\n\r\nDo not treat any model recommendation as permanent.\r\n\r\n## Repository Layout\r\n\r\n```text\r\ncore/ shared review contract, journal manifest, personas, and modules\r\nadapters/ runtime-specific source files\r\nexamples/ installation docs, sample manuscripts, and sample outputs\r\ntemplates/ packaged Claude and Codex adapter templates\r\ntests/ contract, installer, and fixture validation\r\n```\r\n\r\n## Why This Exists\r\n\r\nThis project grew out of Claes Bäckman's econ-focused [AI-research-feedback](https://github.com/claesbackman/AI-research-feedback/tree/main), which uses six parallel agents to review economics papers. I adapted the idea for political science and organized it around a 9-module review battery with journal-specific personas, stage-aware standards, and a machine-readable issue contract. The aim is a structured review framework for political science rather than a generic manuscript-commenting prompt.\r\n\r\n## Limitations\r\n\r\nThis is structured AI review, not editorial guidance from any journal. It can:\r\n\r\n- miss obvious problems or overstate weak ones\r\n- lag behind journal policy changes\r\n- hallucinate issues that do not exist in the manuscript\r\n- fail to catch subtle methodological flaws that a human reviewer would spot\r\n\r\nAlways verify citations, formulas, design claims, and current journal rules before acting on the output. Each report includes a limitations note for that reason.\r\n\r\n## Installation Details\r\n\r\nSee [`examples/installation.md`](./examples/installation.md) for adapter-specific install behavior and overwrite behavior.\r\n\r\n## Contact\r\n\r\nSuggestions, bug reports, and journal-profile contributions are welcome.
