Nemus connects **product intent** (user journey) to **delivery** (milestones, kanban, OpenSpec) — a Storybook-style planning tool that runs in your project.\n\n## About Nemus\n\n**Nemus** comes from Latin *nĕmus*: a woodland with open glades — places where you can step back from the undergrowth and see both the forest and the trees. That is what this tool is for: holding the full product journey and the delivery schedule in one view, so you do not lose the big picture while working card by card.\n\nNemus is meant to be used alongside **[OpenSpec](https://openspec.dev)** — an excellent spec-driven workflow for proposing, planning, and shipping changes. Nemus maps *what* you are building and *when*; OpenSpec carries each piece from proposal through implementation. Cards link to OpenSpec changes when work starts; archive sync can mark them complete.\n\n**Intentional AI, not agent chaos:** Nemus is built to make working with LLMs easier and more deliberate — not to help you spin up a hundred agents and let them run. The skills are invoked explicitly, one conversation at a time, with you in the loop reviewing outcomes before they land on the map. A shared story map and spec-backed changes give agents focused context so you spend fewer tokens re-explaining the product and more tokens on the work that matters. The goal is slower, clearer planning *and* slower, more deliberate building — one small change at a time, with the LLM keeping its context narrow instead of trying to hold the whole system in one prompt.\n\n**Agent harness:** this npm package is currently wired for simple use with **Cursor** (MCP config and skills installed by `nemus init`). Support for additional harnesses is in development.\n\n**Alpha software:** Nemus is early and actively evolving. APIs, file formats, and UI will change. Bugs and rough edges are expected — please report issues and pin versions if stability matters for your team.\n\n## Requirements\n\n- **Node.js 22+**\n- A **git repository** (Nemus stores planning data on a dedicated sidecar branch)\n- **npm**, **pnpm**, or **yarn** in the host project\n- **[OpenSpec](https://openspec.dev)** — install the OpenSpec CLI for change proposals, task tracking, and archive sync\n- **Cursor** — MCP tools and agent skills are installed during init (other harnesses coming later)\n\n## Installation\n\n### 1. Initialize OpenSpec\n\nFrom your project root, install the OpenSpec CLI and scaffold it for your repo:\n\n```bash\nnpm install -g @fission-ai/openspec@latest\nopenspec init --tools cursor\n```\n\nOr without a global install:\n\n```bash\npnpm add -D @fission-ai/openspec\npnpm exec openspec init --tools cursor\n```\n\n`openspec init` creates the `openspec/` directory and wires Cursor slash commands for proposing, applying, and archiving changes. Skip this step if OpenSpec is already initialized in your project.\n\n### 2. Initialize Nemus\n\nFrom your project root:\n\n```bash\nnpx @compassionaterobot/nemus init\n```\n\nOr with pnpm:\n\n```bash\npnpm dlx @compassionaterobot/nemus init\n```\n\n`nemus init` will:\n\n1. Scaffold `planning/.nemus/` (story map, systems registry, config)\n2. Add `@compassionaterobot/nemus` as a devDependency\n3. Wire host scripts (`nemus`, `nemus:validate`, `nemus:mcp`)\n4. Configure Cursor MCP (`.cursor/mcp.json`) and agent skills\n5. Create a planning git sidecar branch when the repo is under git\n\nAfter init, run your package manager install if needed, then **reload MCP in Cursor** so agent tools pick up the Nemus server.\n\nRe-run init safely — it merges harness files and skips existing planning data unless you pass `--force`.\n\n## Daily use\n\nStart the planning UI from your project root:\n\n```bash\nnpm run nemus\n# or: pnpm nemus\n# or: npx nemus run\n```\n\nThis runs `nemus run` — a single local server that serves the bundled planning UI and API. Your browser opens automatically at **http://localhost:6010** (unless you pass `--no-open`).\n\n### Host scripts\n\nAfter init, your `package.json` includes:\n\n| Script | Command | Purpose |\n|--------|---------|---------|\n| `nemus` | `nemus run` | Start planning UI (default daily command) |\n| `nemus:validate` | `nemus validate` | Check `story-map.yaml` and `systems.yaml` |\n| `nemus:mcp` | `nemus mcp` | Run MCP server for agents (stdio) |\n\n## Using Nemus\n\nNemus is a **dual-lens story map** — the same outcome cards appear in two views:\n\n### Story map (planning)\n\nNemus implements [user story mapping](https://jpattonassociates.com/user-story-mapping-presentation/) in the style pioneered by Jeff Patton — journey columns (the **backbone**) run left to right in narrative user order, with outcome cards hanging beneath each step. Milestone rows run top to bottom (delivery schedule). For background on the method, see Patton’s essay [“The new backlog is a map”](https://jpattonassociates.com/the-new-backlog/).\n\nClick cards to open the inspector; drag cards to move them between journey steps and milestones. Use this view to shape scope, set dependencies, tag systems, and plan what ships when.\n\n**Building the user journey:** `nemus init` installs Cursor skills for explicit, conversation-driven planning. Invoke them when you want help shaping the map:\n\n| Skill | Purpose |\n|-------|---------|\n| `build-journey` | Define and refine backbone columns (journey steps) in narrative order |\n| `decompose-journey-step` | Break one journey step into atomic outcome cards |\n| `plan-card` | Plan or refine a single outcome card |\n\nExample: ask Cursor to run the `build-journey` skill when starting a new product, then `decompose-journey-step` for each column you want to flesh out.\n\n### Execution kanban\n\nOpen a delivery milestone to see its kanban: **Draft → Ready → In progress → Complete**. Drag cards between columns as work moves forward. Cards linked to OpenSpec changes show proposal and archive details in the inspector.\n\n### Agents and MCP (Cursor)\n\nNemus is built for AI-assisted planning in Cursor today:\n\n- **`nemus_get`** — read the story map and systems registry\n- **`nemus_patch`** — apply validated writes to planning YAML\n\nSkills installed under `.cursor/skills/` also support dependency mapping (`map-dependencies`), delivery sequencing (`optimize-delivery-sequence`), and brownfield discovery (`discover-completed`, `discover-systems`). Reload MCP after init or after upgrading Nemus. Additional agent harnesses are planned; the MCP server (`nemus mcp`) is harness-agnostic if you want to wire it up yourself.\n\n## Configuration\n\nEdit `planning/.nemus/config.json`:\n\n```json\n{\n  \"serverPort\": 6010,\n  \"projectName\": \"My App\"\n}\n```\n\n- **`serverPort`** — default port for `nemus run` (override with `--port` on the CLI)\n- **`projectName`** — shown in browser tab titles (e.g. `Story map · My App · Nemus`)\n\nPlanning data lives in:\n\n- `planning/.nemus/story-map.yaml` — journey, milestones, and outcome cards\n- `planning/.nemus/systems.yaml` — architecture systems registry\n\nGenerated markdown views (`story-map.md`, `systems.md`) are updated by `nemus codegen`.\n\n## Planning data and version control\n\nNemus keeps planning **in your repository**, version-controlled alongside your code — not in a separate SaaS or opaque database. The story map and systems registry are plain YAML under `planning/.nemus/`, committed to git like any other project artifact.\n\n### Git sidecar worktree\n\nIn a git host, `nemus init` creates a **planning sidecar**: a dedicated branch (`nemus/planning` by default) checked out in a local worktree at `.nemus/worktrees/board`. The live board — UI, API, and MCP — reads and writes planning files from that worktree, not from whatever happens to be on your current code branch.\n\nYour code checkout may still show stale `planning/` files on trunk. Ignore those for map work; the sidecar is canonical. Planning changes commit to the sidecar branch so feature branches stay focused on implementation.\n\n### Remote sync and collaboration\n\nWhen your planning branch has a remote (for example `origin/nemus/planning`), Nemus tracks ahead/behind counts and exposes **fetch** and **sync** controls in the planning UI header. Sync integrates remote changes and pushes local board commits — the same git push/pull model teams already use, applied to the planning branch.\n\nTeammates can work on code and planning in parallel: push your board updates, fetch theirs, and resolve conflicts through normal git workflows. After init, run `git fetch origin nemus/planning` on other machines to pick up the sidecar branch.\n\n### Aligned with the codebase\n\nPlanning lives next to `openspec/`, `src/`, and agent harness files in one repo. Cards link to OpenSpec changes; systems tags reflect your architecture; the map evolves in the same version history as the software it describes. Nemus is built so product intent stays traceable to what you actually ship.\n\n## CLI reference\n\n```text\nnemus <command> [options]\n\nCommands:\n  init              Scaffold planning/.nemus/ in a host repo\n  run               Start planning UI (consumer mode)\n  validate          Validate story-map.yaml and systems.yaml\n  doctor            Diagnose planning sidecar branch and worktree\n  codegen           Regenerate markdown views\n  discover          Draft completed work from OpenSpec archives\n  discover-systems  Draft architecture systems from codebase signals\n  mcp               Start MCP server for agents (stdio)\n\nOptions:\n  --root <path>     Host repository root (default: current directory)\n  --port <number>   Server port (overrides config.json serverPort)\n  --open            Open browser after server starts (run only)\n  --no-open         Do not open browser (run only)\n  --force           Overwrite scaffold templates (init only)\n  -h, --help        Show help\n```\n\nRun `nemus --help` for the full command list including migrations and contributor `dev` mode.\n\n## Upgrading\n\nWhen `@compassionaterobot/nemus` is installed as a semver devDependency:\n\n```bash\npnpm update @compassionaterobot/nemus\n# or: npm update @compassionaterobot/nemus\n```\n\nThen reinstall if needed, restart `pnpm nemus`, and **reload MCP in Cursor** when the CLI version changes.\n\n## Troubleshooting\n\n**Port already in use** — Another process holds the port. Stop it, or set a different `serverPort` / `--port`.\n\n**MCP tools missing in Cursor** — Reload MCP after init. Ensure `node_modules/.bin/nemus` exists (`pnpm install` in the host).\n\n**Validation errors** — Run `pnpm nemus:validate` and fix reported YAML or lifecycle issues.\n\n**Planning sidecar issues** — Run `nemus doctor` to inspect the git sidecar branch and worktree. Pass `--fix` to apply safe repairs.\n","readmeFilename":"README.md"}
