Introduction\r\n\r\nThe [MAT](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medial_axis) is an analytical form of skeletonization of a shape. It is perfectly suited to SVG. Described by many scholars as *the most important image transform*, it has endless use cases, e.g.:\r\n* **Morphing**\r\n* **Shape thinning and fattening** ⭐⭐ NEW ⭐⭐ [StackBlitz demo](https://stackblitz.com/edit/typescript-xuruhe?file=index.ts)\r\n* **Shape classification**\r\n* **Shape simplification**\r\n* **Image compression**\r\n* **Shape Triangulation**\r\n\r\nThe [SAT](http://www.balintmiklos.com/scale-axis/theory_socg_2009.html) is similar to the MAT (and indeed uses it as input) but is often *more practical* as it removes insignifacant MAT branches based on the *local image scale*. The culling severity of branches is controlled by a parameter called *s*.\r\n\r\nIn the image below, the gray silhouette is the original SVG shape and the blue curves represents the SAT. The SAT (and MAT) is internally represented as a tree data structure with branches being quadratic beziers.\r\n\r\n![Alt text](https://raw.github.com/FlorisSteenkamp/MAT/master/github%20assets/two-hole.png)\r\n\r\nFloMat is a MAT/SAT library for planar shapes composed of a closed sequence of linear, quadratic and \r\ncubic bezier curves (such as in SVG). The shape need not be simple, can contain holes and may \r\ninclude multiple 'loops'.\r\n\r\nFor those who are interested, the implementation of the MAT is based on a paper by Hyeong In Choi, Sung Woo Choi, Hwan Pyo Moon and\r\nNam-Sook Wee that can be freely downloaded \r\n[here](https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/70ae/5b583303af0b4d60d356d08f8ed84e1babbc.pdf).\r\nIt also gives some valuable insight into the nature of the MAT.\r\n\r\nFor a less mathematical explanation of the algorithm see \r\n[this Stack Overflow answer](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/29921826/how-do-i-calculate-the-medial-axis-for-a-2d-vector-shape).\r\n\r\nThe implementation of the SAT is similar to the original ideas that can be found in \r\n[this paper](http://www.balintmiklos.com/scale-axis/scale_axis_transform_socg_2009.pdf)\r\nbut it has been improved to preserve topology at any scale >= 1. It also guarantees that\r\nthe SAT is a subset of the MAT.\r\n\r\n# ESM note\r\nThis package is [ESM only](https://gist.github.com/sindresorhus/a39789f98801d908bbc7ff3ecc99d99c)\r\nand can be used in `Node.js` (or in a browser when bundled using e.g. Webpack).\r\n\r\nAdditionally, self-contained `ECMAScript Module` (ESM) files `index.js` and\r\n`index.min.js` in the `./browser` folder are provided.\r\n\r\n# Code example\r\n\r\nNote that the example code given here is in TypeScript since the types make the \r\ncode clearer but plain JavaScript can also be used. \r\n\r\nThe live, interactive code can be viewed in this [StackBlitz project](https://stackblitz.com/edit/typescript-yucdon).\r\n\r\nThe code can also be found under 'draw-mat-ts' in the [examples on GitHub](https://github.com/FlorisSteenkamp/mat-examples). Only\r\nthe .css and .ts files are reproduced here.\r\n\r\n**style.css**\r\n\r\n```css\r\nh1, h2 {\r\n font-family: Lato;\r\n}\r\n\r\n.shape-path {\r\n fill: lightgray;\r\n stroke: darkgray;\r\n stroke-width: 0.1%;\r\n}\r\n\r\n.mat {\r\n fill: none;\r\n stroke: deeppink;\r\n stroke-width: 0.1%;\r\n}\r\n\r\n.sat {\r\n fill: none;\r\n stroke: blue;\r\n stroke-width: 0.2%;\r\n}\r\n```\r\n\r\n**index.ts**\r\n\r\n```typescript\r\nimport './style.css'; // Import stylesheets\r\n\r\nimport { findMats, getPathsFromStr, Mat, traverseEdges, toScaleAxis } from 'flo-mat';\r\n\r\nconst NS = 'http://www.w3.org/2000/svg'; // Svg namespace\r\n\r\n/**\r\n * Creates and returns an SVG DOM element.\r\n * @param id The dom id to assign to the SVG element, e.g. 1 -> 'svg-1'\r\n */\r\nfunction createSvg(id: number) {\r\n let $e = document.createElementNS(NS, 'svg');\r\n $e.setAttributeNS(null, 'id', 'svg' + id);\r\n $e.setAttributeNS(null, 'style', 'width: 100%; display: inline-block');\r\n $e.setAttributeNS(null, 'viewBox', '75 4 557 502');\r\n\r\n return $e;\r\n}\r\n\r\n/**\r\n * Returns an SVG path string of a line.\r\n * @param ps The line endpoints.\r\n */\r\nfunction getLinePathStr(ps: number[][]) {\r\n let [[x0,y0],[x1,y1]] = ps;\r\n return `M${x0} ${y0} L${x1} ${y1}`;\r\n}\r\n\r\n/**\r\n * Returns an SVG path string of a quadratic bezier curve.\r\n * @param ps The quadratic bezier control points.\r\n */\r\nfunction getQuadBezierPathStr(ps: number[][]) {\r\n let [[x0,y0],[x1,y1],[x2,y2]] = ps;\r\n return `M${x0} ${y0} Q${x1} ${y1} ${x2} ${y2}`;\r\n}\r\n\r\n/**\r\n * Returns an SVG path string of a cubic bezier curve.\r\n * @param ps The cubic bezier control points.\r\n */\r\nfunction getCubicBezierPathStr(ps: number[][]) {\r\n let [[x0,y0],[x1,y1],[x2,y2],[x3,y3]] = ps;\r\n return `M${x0} ${y0} C${x1} ${y1} ${x2} ${y2} ${x3} ${y3}`;\r\n}\r\n\r\n\r\n/**\r\n * The SVG path string representing our shape.\r\n */\r\nconst svgPathStr = `\r\n M 144 251\r\n C 145 169 110 82 227 59 \r\n C 344 36 429 -46 505 96 \r\n C 581 238 696 407 554 435 \r\n C 412 463 191 532 197 442 \r\n C 203 352 213 363 276 346 \r\n C 339 329 563 318 437 242 \r\n C 311 166 302 181 297 314 \r\n C 292 447 160 585 151 419 \r\n C 142 253 87.12 312.78 86 314 \r\n C 87.16 312.74 142.8632 252.2348 144 251 \r\n z\r\n`;\r\n\r\n\r\n/**\r\n * Adds a path to the given SVG element and give it a shape-path class.\r\n */\r\nfunction setSvgShapePath(\r\n $svg: SVGSVGElement, \r\n pathStr: string) {\r\n\r\n let $path = document.createElementNS(NS, 'path'); // Create SVG path elem.\r\n $path.setAttribute('class', 'shape-path'); \r\n $svg.appendChild($path); // Add the path element to the SVG.\r\n document.body.appendChild($svg); // Add the SVG to the document body.\r\n $path.setAttribute('d', svgPathStr); \r\n}\r\n\r\n\r\nfunction main() {\r\n // Create and add and SVG element to our HTML page.\r\n let $svg = createSvg(1); // Create SVG element.\r\n\r\n setSvgShapePath($svg, svgPathStr);\r\n\r\n // Get loops (representing the shape) from some SVG path.\r\n let bezierLoops = getPathsFromStr(svgPathStr);\r\n \r\n // We could also just give an array of linear, quadratic or cubic beziers as \r\n // below (all lines in this case). Then there is a function\r\nfor programatically creating an SVG HTML element. The next three functions, `getLinePathStr`,\r\n`getQuadBezierPathStr` and `getCubicBezierPathStr` will be used for creating the paths that will\r\nrepresent the Medial Axis on our SVG. Following that is the SVG path string of our shape and\r\na function, `setSvgShapePath`, to add the path to the SVG.\r\n\r\nThe next function, `main`, is the entry point of our example. The first two lines creates the\r\nSVG and sets the path. The third line:\r\n\r\n```typescript\r\nlet bezierLoops = getPathsFromStr(svgPathStr);\r\n```\r\nextracts the path data into an array that is suitable to be comsumed by `findMats`,\r\nthe function from the library that will do the number crunching and return an array\r\nof Medial Axis Transforms. The array, `bezierLoops` is of type `number[][][][]`.\r\nIt is an array of 'loops'. Each 'loop' (of which there is only one in our case) is a sequence of \r\nbezier curves such that the starting point of the first bezier corresponds to the end point of \r\nthe last. Each bezier in the loop is represented by its (2, 3 or 4) control points which has type \r\nsignature `number[][]` hence the type `number[][][][]` for `bezierLoops`.\r\nFor example, the cubic bezier with control points at (1,1), (5,1), (5,2) and (4,2) is represented as\r\nan array of points `[[1,1],[5,1],[5,2],[4,2]]`. A loop consisting of just 2 beziers can\r\nbe encoded as say `[ [[1,1],[5,1],[5,2],[4,2]], [4,2],[3,3],[1,3],[1,1] ]` and finally\r\nwe can make an array of loops from this (containing just 1 element) as follows: \r\n`[[ [[1,1],[5,1],[5,2],[4,2]], [4,2],[3,3],[1,3],[1,1] ]]`. \r\n\r\nThe reason for being able to provide an array of loops is because a shape might consist of\r\nan outer loop with one or more inner loops representing holes. This is also reflected\r\nin the fact that SVG paths can have sub-paths. In such a case the inner\r\nloops must have opposite orientation than the outer envelope loop. The rule used to indicate which \r\nloops form holes and which are part of the shape is the default SVG \r\n[non-zero](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/SVG/Attribute/fill-rule)\r\nfill rule. Loops may also intersect each other,\r\nin the process possibly creating more than one disjoint shape. In the above example a single\r\nintersecting loop creates a shape with a hole.\r\n\r\nThis brings us to the heart of the example, the `findMats` function.\r\n\r\n```typescript\r\nlet mats = findMats(bezierLoops, 3);\r\n```\r\nThe function extracts the Medial Axis Transforms\r\nof all shapes created by the the array of input bezier loops.\r\nIt takes an additional parameter indicating the number of points\r\non each bezier for which a MAT vertex 'point' should be calculated. A\r\nvalue of 3 is the default and is a reasonable compromise between\r\nspeed and accuracy. A value of 15 would give highly accurate\r\nresults.\r\n\r\nIn the special case of a single non-intersecting closed loop\r\nthe returned MAT array will be of length 1. Let us look at it \r\nin more detail.\r\n\r\nThe returned MAT is essentially a tree data structure. Even if\r\nthe shape contains holes it is a tree since\r\nthe graph is snipped at so-called hole-closing maximal disks to form a tree. \r\n(It is still possible though to traverse the MAT as a non-tree graph if required).\r\n\r\nAs in the example code above, we can traverse the tree to\r\ndraw the Medial Axis (MA). This is done by utilizing the `traverseEdges` function. (Note that \r\nthe MA is the MAT but without the maximal disk radius, etc. information encoded on\r\nit). This is accomplished by the `drawMats` function. The inner function, `f`,\r\ndraws a single MA. \r\n\r\nFirst we select a tree node as the root of\r\nthe MAT tree. One such node is given to us via `mat.cpNode`.\r\nThe tree can now be traversed from this node outwards to the tree\r\nleaves just like in any other tree traversal. Each node, which is\r\na class of type `CpNode` (for Contact Point Node), has several\r\nproperties (see the docs). For our current purposes \r\nwe only need the `matCurveToNextVertex` property.\r\n\r\n`matCurveToNextVertex` is a bezier curve (as defined previously with\r\ntype `number[][]`) of order 1, 2 or 3 forming a part of \r\nthe MA. In the example code we draw this curve on our orignal SVG.\r\n\r\nThe `main` function concludes by finding the Scale Axis Transform of our found\r\nMAT and then drawing it on top of the MAT with a different css class (blue).\r\n\r\n# Installation\r\n\r\nWhether your target is Node or the browser the library can be installed via [npm](https://www.npmjs.com/).\r\n(For the browser you can also download the [minified.js](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/FlorisSteenkamp/MAT/master/browser/index.min.js) file - see below)\r\n\r\nSo whatever your target, at the the command line:\r\n```cli\r\nnpm install flo-mat\r\n```\r\n\r\n## Node with JavaScript/TypeScript (or the browser (with [webpack](https://webpack.js.org/)) or similar) \r\n\r\nIn your project\r\n\r\n```javascript\r\nimport { findMats } from 'flo-mat';\r\n```\r\n\r\n## Browser - directly, without a bundler, using the pre-bundled minified .js file\r\n\r\nPlease note that no tree shaking will take place in this case.\r\n\r\n```javascript\r\nimport { findMats } from './node_modules/flo-mat/browser/index.min.js';\r\n```\r\n\r\n# Usage\r\n\r\nPlease see the documentation for the primary functions and classes: \r\n[findMats](https://mat-demo.appspot.com/docs/modules/_find_mats_.html), [toScaleAxis](https://mat-demo.appspot.com/docs/modules/_to_scale_axis_.html) and \r\n[CpNode](https://mat-demo.appspot.com/docs/classes/_cp_node_.cpnode.html).\r\n\r\n# Documentation\r\n\r\nFor documentation and code examples please see the \r\n[documentation](https://mat-demo.appspot.com/docs/index.html)\r\n\r\n\r\n# License\r\nThe MIT License (MIT)\r\n\r\nCopyright © 2018 Floris Steenkamp\r\n\r\nPermission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated documentation files (the \"Software\"), to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions:\r\n\r\nThe above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software.\r\n\r\nTHE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED \"AS IS\", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT.
