The only requirement is Node.js.\n\n---\n\n## Requirements\n\n- **Node.js 18 or later** — check with `node --version`. Download from [nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org) if needed.\n- One of: **Claude Desktop**, **Claude Code**, **Cursor**, **Windsurf**, or **VS Code** (with GitHub Copilot, Cline, or Continue).\n- Your AI tool already connected to your database. This tool handles **visualization only** — it does not connect to your database directly.\n\n---\n\n## Setup\n\nRun this once in your terminal:\n\n```\nnpx --yes --package @daydream-technologies/3d-db-mcp 3d-db-mcp setup\n```\n\nThis detects which AI tools you have installed and configures them automatically. No config files to edit.\n\nThen **restart your AI tool** and ask it:\n\n> \"Load my database schema into the 3D visualizer\"\n\nA browser window opens with your schema in 3D.\n\n---\n\n## VS Code (GitHub Copilot, Cline, Continue)\n\nVS Code MCP config is project-scoped. Add `.vscode/mcp.json` to your project:\n\n```json\n{\n  \"servers\": {\n    \"3d-db\": {\n      \"type\": \"stdio\",\n      \"command\": \"npx\",\n      \"args\": [\"--yes\", \"--package\", \"@daydream-technologies/3d-db-mcp\", \"3d-db-mcp\"]\n    }\n  }\n}\n```\n\n---\n\n## What your AI can do\n\n### `load_schema`\n\nLoads your database schema into the 3D visualizer. Accepts JSON or SQL DDL. Replaces the current import (full load).\n\n**Example prompt:**\n> \"Load my database schema into the 3D visualizer\"\n\n### `preview_schema_proposal`\n\nSends a **proposed** schema JSON to the visualizer as a **preview** only. The accepted baseline stays unchanged until the user clicks **Accept** in the **Agent** tab (when using the repo dev app with WebSocket bridge). Use this for LLM-suggested migrations; use `load_schema` when you intend to replace the whole schema immediately.\n\n**Example prompt:**\n> \"Preview this proposed schema JSON in the 3D visualizer without replacing my baseline\"\n\n### `highlight_query`\n\nHighlights a SQL query — dims unrelated tables, draws the join path.\n\n**Example prompt:**\n> \"Show me how this query touches the database\"\n\n### `get_schema`\n\nReads the current schema back from the visualizer, including tables, relationships, row counts, and optimization tips.\n\n**Example prompt:**\n> \"What does my schema look like right now? Any issues?\"\n\n---\n\n## How it works\n\nThe setup command patches your AI tool's config file to add:\n\n```json\n{\n  \"command\": \"npx\",\n  \"args\": [\"--yes\", \"--package\", \"@daydream-technologies/3d-db-mcp\", \"3d-db-mcp\"]\n}\n```\n\nWhen your AI tool starts a session, it runs this command automatically. The server:\n\n1. Picks an available port (starting at 4242)\n2. Generates a one-time session token\n3. Opens your browser at `http://localhost:<port>?token=<token>`\n4. Serves the 3D visualizer as a local web page\n5. Listens for tool calls from your AI\n\nThe server shuts down automatically when your AI session ends.\n\n---\n\n## Security\n\n- Runs on `localhost` only — never exposed to the network\n- A random token is generated each session — no other tab or process can connect\n- No database credentials are stored or proxied — your AI tool handles the database connection\n- The server shuts down automatically when your AI tool session ends\n","readmeFilename":"README.md","_rev":"1-b7b6f0fb9037800791d464a961f8d123"}
