Runs on any machine with Node ≥ 18, including Windows.\n\nMemories are pulled from the Engram sync relay and decrypted locally: the\nrelay only ever sees ciphertext, and every blob is HMAC-verified before it is\nopened. Works with Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, or any MCP\nclient.\n\n## 1. Create your account (and a vault with memories in it)\n\nThis server reads *your* vault, so there has to be one:\n\n1. Create an account at <https://engram.ellmstack.dev/app> — the\n   \"Create an account\" link is on the sign-in screen.\n2. On one machine, install the daemon and sync your first memories with\n   `engram onboarding` (one command from <https://engram.ellmstack.dev> —\n   Linux, macOS, and Windows).\n\nAfter that, every agent you connect below can read your synced memories —\non any other machine, daemon-free.\n\n## 2. Connect your AI tool\n\nMCP stdio config, e.g. Claude Code:\n\n```bash\nclaude mcp add engram -- npx -y @elai-intelligence/engram-mcp\n```\n\n(Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf: add the same command as an MCP server.)\n\n## Tools\n\n- `engram_search {query, limit?, layer?}` — keyword rank over locally\n  decrypted memories with relevance scores.\n- `engram_get {id}` — full details of one memory.\n- `engram_context {query, budget?}` — top memories for a task, budget-truncated.\n- `engram_health {}` — vault stats + relay connection status.\n\n## Scope today\n\nRead-only: search and read. Nothing this server does writes to your vault,\nand it has no capture tool at all — connecting Engram to your AI tool never\nstarts auto-capturing. To capture, use the local MCP server (`engramd-mcp`,\ninstalled with `engram mcp install`) on a machine with `engramd` — and even\nthere, capture is explicit-only: a memory is stored only when\n`engram_capture` is called. If you want something remembered, say so in plain\nwords (\"remember that…\") so your assistant calls it.\n\nRelay-side search is client-side keyword ranking (the relay stores only\nciphertext); the daemon's hybrid semantic search (FTS5 + local embeddings)\nruns on the machine that hosts the vault. `engram_decay` (daemon-local\nhygiene) has no relay equivalent and is not offered here.\n\n## Security notes\n\n- Zero plaintext ever reaches the relay; keys derive in-process from your\n  passphrase (Argon2id, byte-exact with the daemon) or unwrap from your\n  account key, and are wiped after import.\n- The session token is stored `0600` next to the config, never inside it.\n- Every blob is HMAC-verified before decryption; LWW resolution matches the\n  daemon's sync client.\n\n## License\n\nSource is private — this package is UNLICENSED.
