The shared contract is:\n\n- Canonical Lore is the approved truth\n- MCP/CLI/TUI write canonical Lore only through explicit user-directed actions\n- Project `.lore/` working-copy edits are *proposals* until reviewed and approved\n- Approved changes update canonical Lore, re-index one source, and become visible everywhere\n\n## Project Context For Code Agents\n\nUse `lore context add` from a code repo to give Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or another agent local project knowledge:\n\n```bash\ncd ~/workspace/ridekick\nlore context add ridekick --view shared\n```\n\nThis creates `repo/.lore/context.md`, editable Shared snapshots under `.lore/sources/<project>/`, and local agent instructions. The Lore-managed manifest, diff baselines, proposal history, and privacy-revoked edit recovery live outside the repository. Repository context is always bound to one Team workspace and `project_view: shared`; All and Private are never exported. By default, Lore includes every current, active, unrestricted, authoritative, workspace-visible signal in the exact Team project; pass `--limit <n>` only when you deliberately want a smaller working copy. Pass `--with-frontmatter` (opt-in this release; set `LORE_CONTEXT_FRONTMATTER=1` to default it on) to stamp each snapshot with re-ingestable YAML frontmatter — the export round-trips back into Lore identity-preserving, updating the original source instead of creating a duplicate. Context uses copied snapshots by default, not symlinks. Edits inside `.lore/sources/` are proposed changes; canonical Lore only updates after `lore changes apply`, which creates an append-only replacement version and rebinds the working copy while retaining the prior version. Use `lore changes discard <id>` to drop a local proposal and refresh the snapshot from canonical. If an exported source later becomes Personal, restricted, ambient, non-authoritative, superseded, deleted, unreadable, or moves workspaces, refresh removes it from the repository immediately; a local edit is moved to private `context-revoked-snapshots/` recovery storage in the Lore data directory.\n\n`context add` also registers the repo in `~/.config/lore/context-targets.json`, so the Lore daemon keeps clean snapshots fresh after sync cycles. Refresh reuses the recorded Team workspace even when Personal is active. Local edits are never overwritten while the source remains repository-eligible; they remain proposals and become conflicted if canonical Lore changed too. Privacy-revoked edits move out of the repo into the private recovery directory described above. A repo's `.lore/` can attach **multiple projects from that Team workspace** (`lore context add p1 p2 p3`), each under `.lore/sources/<project>/`. Use `lore context list` to see repos with Lore context and the last refresh result.\n\n`context add` writes `.lore/.gitignore` so generated snapshots stay out of the host repo by default. Most users should leave `.lore/` uncommitted; add `.lore/` to the repo root `.gitignore` too if you want the rule to be obvious. See [Project Context Working Copies](docs/PROJECT_CONTEXT.md) for the full workflow.\n\nTo turn off repo-local context, run `lore context remove` from the repo root. It unregisters the repo from daemon refresh, removes only the generated `.lore/` working copy, and refuses to discard active proposals unless you pass `--force`.\n\n## Requirements\n\n- **Node.js** 22.5+ — Lore's default local read-replica uses Node's built-in\n  `node:sqlite` support.\n- **OpenAI API key** (embeddings)\n- **Anthropic API key** (metadata extraction, auto-routing, brief generation, research)\n- **Lore account** (free — sign up via `lore auth login`)\n\n## How Sync Works\n\n1. **Discovery** (free) — Finds files, computes SHA256 hashes, checks for duplicates\n2. **Processing** (new files only) — Claude extracts metadata, OpenAI generates embeddings, stores in Supabase\n\nSame content on different machines produces the same hash — no duplicate processing.\n\nLore Cloud (Supabase) is the canonical sync layer. Git in `LORE_DATA_DIR` is optional local history; generated cache files such as `sources/.paths.json` and `deleted-hashes.json` are ignored and can be rebuilt. If the data repo gets into a Git conflict, run:\n\n```bash\nlore sync repair\n```\n\nThe daemon reports repair-needed Git state but still refreshes project `.lore/` working copies from Lore Cloud.\n\n### Async Git Push\n\nHot ingest/edit/delete paths return immediately; the daemon batches accumulated changes into a single commit/push every 30 seconds. `lore sync status` shows `Pending pushes: N (oldest 2m ago)` when the queue isn't empty. Pass `--sync-push` (or set `LORE_SYNC_PUSH=1`) for the inline-push escape hatch — useful in CI / scripts.\n\nThe status output also shows the daemon's package version. After `npm install -g @getlore/cli` upgrades the CLI, the running daemon detects the version drift within ~60s, SIGTERMs itself, and launchd's `KeepAlive` respawns it from the new `dist/` — no manual `lore sync restart` needed. Set `LORE_DISABLE_VERSION_RESTART=1` to disable for local dev. On non-launchd hosts, the SIGTERM still fires; respawn needs a supervisor (systemd, etc.) or a manual `lore sync start`.\n\n### Multi-machine and multi-agent writes\n\nTwo writers (different machines, different agents, or human + agent) hitting the same source simultaneously won't silently overwrite each other. The losing write gets a typed conflict response:\n\n```\nSource <id> was modified by another writer since you started this approval.\nPull latest changes and run `lore changes merge` to merge, then approve again.\n```\n\nMCP `ingest` action `'update'` returns a structured `conflict` block on race-loss so agents pattern-match and retry without scraping error messages.\n\n### Correcting a source from the CLI\n\n`lore ingest --replaces <id> --reason \"<why>\"` supersedes an existing source with new content, creating a v2 in its version chain while v1 stays immutable — the by-id correction primitive with provenance, no `.lore/` working copy required:\n\n```\nlore ingest --file corrected.md --replaces 47912ac1 --reason \"Fix the Data hygiene section\"\n```\n\n`<id>` is a full source id or an unambiguous 8+ char prefix. Tags and project/workstream routing **inherit from the parent** (passing `--tags`/`--project`/`--workstream` is an error, not a silent no-op); `--title`/`--type`/`--url`/`--name` are optional overrides. Identical content short-circuits as a no-op; a stale parent (already superseded) prints the current chain head and a ready-to-run retry. This is the CLI surface for the same path MCP `ingest` exposes via `replaces` + `reason`. In-place `action: 'update'` stays MCP-only — versioned replace is the correction primitive on the CLI.\n\n### Spend Control\n\n`lore cost` shows token usage and dollar cost by feature, workspace, or window. A daily Anthropic spend cap is **on by default as a backstop** — `LORE_MAX_DAILY_TOKEN_SPEND_CENTS=200` ($2/day); override with any positive integer (cents) or set `0` to disable. Past the cap, new LLM calls are refused before the SDK runs (`LLMBudgetExceededError`); an 80%-of-cap warning fires once per process. It gates brief generation, sync, the auto-router, the chunk extractor, `research`, and `lore ask`. Brief auto-update + auto-router degrade gracefully when the cap trips. See [docs/COST_DISCIPLINE.md](docs/COST_DISCIPLINE.md) for the cost-discipline methodology.\n\n### Typed-chunk extraction\n\nLore can extract typed chunks (decisions, commitments, quotes, …) from each source. `LORE_EXTRACTION_ENABLED=true` turns on auto-extraction at ingest and sync time (default off); `lore docs extract-backfill` mines the sources that already exist. Extraction is tier-aware — producer-stamped `skip` sources never call the LLM — and inherits the daily spend cap.
