It\nowns the typed `model -> tool calls -> model` loop, the streaming\nevent surface, durable HITL approvals, multi-agent handoffs, and\nthe cross-cutting safety mechanisms (intra-loop reasoning\npreservation, agent-level model fallback, post-compaction hooks,\nper-tool model-tier hints, lateral-leak defenses).\n\nThe package is **library-mode-first**: every primitive that can be\nuseful from a script (`createAgent`, `runStateToJSON` /\n`runStateFromJSON`, the filter library, `evaluatorOptimizer`,\n`Agent.fanOut`, `agent.progress.write / read`) ships from the npm\npackage without the optional standalone server.\n\n## Dependencies\n\n- `@graphorin/core` - typed contracts (`AgentEvent`, `RunState`,\n  `RunContext`, `Provider`, `Tool`, `StopCondition`, `HandoffFilter`,\n  `Sensitivity`, …).\n- `@graphorin/provider` - middleware composer assertion + token\n  counter dispatcher + per-provider model-tier auto-classifier.\n- `@graphorin/tools` - `ToolRegistry` + `ToolExecutor` (parallel /\n  sequential dispatch, approval flow, sandbox enforcement, inbound\n  sanitization).\n- `@graphorin/skills` - skill metadata cards, lazy body loading.\n- `@graphorin/memory` - `Memory` facade + `ContextEngine` for\n  per-step prompt assembly + auto-compaction trigger.\n- `@graphorin/sessions` - multi-agent attribution, handoff records,\n  `AgentRegistry`, audit trail.\n- `@graphorin/observability` - `Tracer`, span attributes, counter\n  receivers.\n- `@graphorin/security` - `SecretsAccessScope` for sub-agent\n  inheritance, audit chain, lateral-leak guard primitives.\n\n## Quick start\n\n```ts\nimport { createAgent } from '@graphorin/agent';\nimport { createProvider } from '@graphorin/provider';\n\nconst agent = createAgent({\n  name: 'helpful-assistant',\n  instructions: 'You are a helpful, concise assistant.',\n  provider: createProvider({ /* ... */ }),\n});\n\nfor await (const event of agent.stream('Plan a trip to Mars')) {\n  if (event.type === 'text.delta') process.stdout.write(event.delta);\n}\n```\n\n## Highlights\n\n- **Streaming-first.** Every operation returns\n  `AsyncIterable<AgentEvent<TOutput>>`. `agent.run(...)` is a thin\n  collect helper.\n- **Typed events.** The `AgentEvent<TOutput>` discriminated union\n  covers every event the runtime emits (text deltas, tool calls,\n  approvals, handoffs, compaction, fan-out, evaluator iterations,\n  progress artifacts, lateral-leak detections, model fallback\n  transitions, …). `assertNever(...)` exhaustiveness is verified at\n  compile time.\n- **Durable HITL.** `runStateToJSON(state)` /\n  `runStateFromJSON(serialized)` round-trip the full run state\n  through any storage the caller picks (file, SQLite, KV, S3); with a\n  `checkpointStore` wired, resuming a granted approval executes the\n  approved tool exactly once.\n- **Multi-agent.** `Agent.toTool({ exposeTurns, inputFilter, capability, contextFold, propagateTaint })`\n  wraps an agent as a tool the parent agent can call. The parent's\n  abort signal, deps, and sessionId propagate into the sub-run;\n  without an `inputFilter` the sub-agent sees only the input string\n  (no parent conversation crosses the boundary), and there is no\n  secret-inheritance mechanism at this boundary at all - least\n  authority by construction. `capability: 'read-only'` blocks\n  side-effecting tools in the child, `contextFold` returns a\n  distilled outcome instead of the raw transcript tail, and taint\n  from the child's untrusted inputs propagates to the parent by\n  default.\n- **Prompt-cache economics.** Opt-in `cachePolicy: { breakpoints: 'auto' }`\n  anchors provider cache breakpoints on the stable prefix so long\n  conversations are written once and read at the discounted rate;\n  cache read/write token legs flow through `Usage` and cost\n  tracking.\n- **Verifiers + deterministic replay.** `verifiers` run deterministic\n  checks on every terminal response (`verifier.result` events, up to\n  `maxVerifierRounds` feedback rounds); opt-in\n  `recordProviderResponses` journals raw model responses onto\n  `RunState` so `createReplayProvider(state)` re-drives the run\n  offline and fails loudly on divergence.\n- **Structured planning.** `plan: true` gives the model an\n  `update_plan` tool and surfaces the live plan as\n  `RunState.todos`.\n- **Filter library.** `filters.lastN(n)`, `filters.lastUser`,\n  `filters.summary({...})`, `filters.bySensitivity({...})`,\n  `filters.stripReasoning()`, `filters.stripSensitiveOutputs()`,\n  `filters.stripToolCalls()`, `filters.compose(...)`. Every filter\n  returns a serializable `HandoffInputFilterDescriptor` so the\n  JSONL session export can replay it byte-equal.\n- **Cancellation.** `agent.abort({ drain, onPendingApprovals })` -\n  the default hard-kills the in-flight provider stream mid-event;\n  `drain: true` lets the current step's stream finish (reach its step\n  boundary) before stopping. A mid-stream abort ends the run as\n  `'aborted'` (a cancellation), never a failed run. Pending approvals\n  can be auto-denied (`'deny'` default), held (`'hold'`), or raised as\n  an error (`'fail'`).\n- **Reasoning preservation.** Anthropic Claude tool-use loops\n  round-trip `reasoning` content parts (with opaque `meta` such as\n  `signature` / `data`) into the next provider call when the\n  effective `reasoningRetention` is not `'strip'`. The handoff\n  boundary is independent: `filters.stripReasoning()` is always\n  applied to messages forwarded to a sub-agent regardless of the\n  intra-loop policy.\n- **Agent-level model fallback.** `Agent.fallbackModels: ModelSpec[]`\n  retries the whole step against the next model on rate-limit /\n  capacity / context-length errors; `agent.model.fellback` event\n  fires per transition; per-model usage attribution lives in\n  `RunState.usageByModel`.\n- **Post-compaction hook lifecycle.** When\n  `@graphorin/memory.contextEngine` auto-compacts the buffer, the\n  runtime fires every registered `postCompactionHooks[i]` between\n  the trim and the next `provider.stream(...)` call. Failed hooks\n  are isolated; the harness continues with the survivors.\n- **Agent-step-level fan-out.** `Agent.fanOut({ subagents,\n  mergeStrategy, perBudget, ... })` spawns N sub-agents under a\n  bounded-fanout cap (default `maxConcurrentChildren: 4`) with\n  per-child token / tool-call / duration budgets and four built-in\n  merge strategies (`'concat'`, `'first-success'`, `'judge-merge'`,\n  `'custom'`).\n- **`evaluatorOptimizer({...})`.** Generator → Evaluator iteration\n  loop with three rubric kinds (`'free-form'`, `'zod'`,\n  `'llm-judge'`) + REQUIRED iteration cap.\n- **Progress artifacts.** `agent.progress.write(content, { role,\n  seq, sensitivity, tags })` and `agent.progress.read({ runId,\n  role, sinceSeq, maxArtifacts })` persist UTF-8 text artifacts to\n  the artifact root via atomic-write `.tmp + rename` discipline for\n  cross-session continuity.\n- **Per-tool model-tier hints.** `tool({ ..., preferredModel:\n  'fast' | 'balanced' | 'smart' | ModelSpec })` declares a hint;\n  `Agent.modelTierMap` resolves the cost-tier vocabulary to\n  concrete `Provider` instances at agent warm-up; the per-step\n  planner walks the precedence ladder\n  `'prepare-step' > 'tier-map' | 'spec' > 'agent-preferred' >\n  'fallthrough-default'` once per step.\n- **Lateral-leak defense layer.** `Agent.causalityMonitor`\n  (Agentic Reference Monitor pattern), `Agent.mergeGuard` (per-child\n  trust scoring + bias detection on `'judge-merge'`; `detect-and-block`\n  refuses the merge with `MergeBlockedError`), the protocol\n  injection guard (`guardOutboundContent` - an exported helper for\n  the server boundary, not an `AgentConfig` knob), and\n  commentary-phase trace sanitization at the session-output\n  boundary compose orthogonally with the other security layers\n  (handoff input filter, outbound redaction, inbound sanitization).\n- **Inbound sanitization preamble.** Part of the context-engine\n  assemble path: with `autoAssembleContext: true` **and** memory\n  wired, when the assembled message list contains any non-trusted\n  `MessageContent` part the engine appends the locale-resolved\n  preamble fragment to the system prompt **after** the cache\n  breakpoint so the trusted-only cache prefix is not invalidated.\n  Without that opt-in the preamble (like the rest of `assemble()`)\n  does not run; the context engine is configured on the memory\n  facade (`createMemory({ contextEngine })`), not on `AgentConfig`.\n\n## Documentation\n\nThe full architecture lives in the framework docs (the agent loop\nreference).
