We will continue to build on this experiment with the aim of creating a fully capable lightweight WASM Postgres with support for extensions such as pgvector.\n\n## Whats new in V0.1\n\nVersion 0.1 (up from 0.0.2) includes significant changes to the Postgres build - it's about 1/3 smaller at 2.6mb gzipped, and up to 2-3 times faster. Logs are sent to the console.\n- `relaxedDurability`: boolean - under relaxed durability mode PGlite will not wait for flushes to storage to complete when using the indexedDB file system.\n\n### Methods:\n\n#### `.query<T>(query: string, params?: any[], options?: QueryOptions): Promise<Results<T>>`\n\nExecute a single statement, optionally with parameters.\n\nUses the *extended query* Postgres wire protocol.\n\nReturns single [result object](#results-objects).\n\n##### Example:\n\n```ts\nawait pg.query(\n  'INSERT INTO test (name) VALUES ($1);',\n  [ 'test' ]\n);\n// { affectedRows: 1 },\n```\n\n##### QueryOptions:\n\nThe `query` and `exec` methods take an optional `options` objects with the following parameters:\n\n- `rowMode: \"object\" | \"array\"`\n  The returned row object type, either an object of `fieldName: value` mappings or an array of positional values. Defaults to `\"object\"`.\n- `parsers: ParserOptions`\n  An object of type  `{[[pgType: number]: (value: string) => any;]}` mapping Postgres data type id to parser function.\n  For convenance the `pglite` package exports a const for most common Postgres types:\n\n  ```ts\n  import { types } from \"@electric-sql/pglite\";\n  await pg.query(`\n    SELECT * FROM test WHERE name = $1;\n  `, [\"test\"], {\n    rowMode: \"array\",\n    parsers: {\n      [types.TEXT]: (value) => value.toUpperCase(),\n    }\n  });\n  ```\n\n- `blob: Blob | File`\n  Attach a `Blob` or `File` object to the query that can used with a `COPY FROM` command by using the virtual `/dev/blob` device, see [importing and exporting](#importing-and-exporting-with-copy-tofrom).\n\n#### `.exec(query: string, options?: QueryOptions): Promise<Array<Results>>`\n\nExecute one or more statements. *(note that parameters are not supported)*\n\nThis is useful for applying database migrations, or running multi-statement sql that doesn't use parameters.\n\nUses the *simple query* Postgres wire protocol.\n\nReturns array of [result objects](#results-objects), one for each statement.\n\n##### Example:\n\n```ts\nawait pg.exec(`\n  CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS test (\n    id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,\n    name TEXT\n  );\n  INSERT INTO test (name) VALUES ('test');\n  SELECT * FROM test;\n`);\n// [\n//   { affectedRows: 0 },\n//   { affectedRows: 1 },\n//   {\n//     rows: [\n//       { id: 1, name: 'test' }\n//     ]\n//     affectedRows: 0,\n//     fields: [\n//       { name: 'id', dataTypeID: '23' },\n//       { name: 'name', dataTypeID: '25' },\n//     ]\n//   }\n// ]\n```\n\n#### `.transaction<T>(callback: (tx: Transaction) => Promise<T>)`\n\nTo start an interactive transaction pass a callback to the transaction method. It is passed a `Transaction` object which can be used to perform operations within the transaction.\n\n##### `Transaction` objects:\n\n- `tx.query<T>(query: string, params?: any[], options?: QueryOptions): Promise<Results<T>>`\n  The same as the main [`.query` method](#querytquery-string-params-any-promiseresultst).\n- `tx.exec(query: string, options?: QueryOptions): Promise<Array<Results>>`\n  The same as the main [`.exec` method](#execquery-string-promisearrayresults).\n- `tx.rollback()`\n  Rollback and close the current transaction.\n\n##### Example:\n\n```ts\nawait pg.transaction(async (tx) => {\n  await tx.query(\n    'INSERT INTO test (name) VALUES ('$1');',\n    [ 'test' ]\n  );\n  return await ts.query('SELECT * FROM test;');\n});\n```\n\n#### `.close(): Promise<void>`\n\nClose the database, ensuring it is shut down cleanly.\n\n#### `.listen(channel: string, callback: (payload: string) => void): Promise<void>`\n\nSubscribe to a [pg_notify](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/sql-notify.html) channel. The callback will receive the payload from the notification.\n\nReturns an unsubscribe function to unsubscribe from the channel.\n\n##### Example:\n\n```ts\nconst unsub = await pg.listen('test', (payload) => {\n  console.log('Received:', payload);\n});\nawait pg.query(\"NOTIFY test, 'Hello, world!'\");\n```\n\n#### `.unlisten(channel: string, callback?: (payload: string) => void): Promise<void>`\n\nUnsubscribe from the channel. If a callback is provided it removes only that callback from the subscription, when no callback is provided is unsubscribes all callbacks for the channel.\n\n#### `onNotification(callback: (channel: string, payload: string) => void): () => void`\n\nAdd an event handler for all notifications received from Postgres.\n\n**Note:** This does not subscribe to the notification, you will have to manually subscribe with `LISTEN channel_name`.\n\n#### `offNotification(callback: (channel: string, payload: string) => void): void`\n\nRemove an event handler for all notifications received from Postgres.\n\n### Properties:\n\n- `.ready` *boolean (read only)*: Whether the database is ready to accept queries.\n- `.closed` *boolean (read only)*: Whether the database is closed and no longer accepting queries.\n- `.waitReady` *Promise<void>*: Promise that resolves when the database is ready to use. Note that queries will wait for this if called before the database has fully initialised, and so it's not necessary to wait for it explicitly.\n\n### Results<T> Objects:\n\nResult objects have the following properties:\n\n- `rows: Row<T>[]` - The rows retuned by the query\n- `affectedRows?: number` - Count of the rows affected by the query. Note this is *not* the count of rows returned, it is the number or rows in the database changed by the query.\n- `fields: { name: string; dataTypeID: number }[]` - Field name and Postgres data type ID for each field returned.\n- `blob: Blob` - A `Blob` containing the data written to the virtual `/dev/blob/` device by a `COPY TO` command. See [importing and exporting](#importing-and-exporting-with-copy-tofrom).\n\n\n### Row<T> Objects:\n\nRows objects are a key / value mapping for each row returned by the query.\n\nThe `.query<T>()` method can take a TypeScript type describing the expected shape of the returned rows. *(Note: this is not validated at run time, the result only cast to the provided type)*\n\n### Web Workers:\n\nIt's likely that you will want to run PGlite in a Web Worker so that it doesn't block the main thread. To aid in this we provide a `PGliteWorker` with the same API as the core `PGlite` but it runs Postgres in a dedicated Web Worker. To use, import from the `/worker` export:\n\n```js\nimport { PGliteWorker } from \"@electric-sql/pglite/worker\";\n\nconst pg = new PGliteWorker('idb://my-database');\nawait pg.exec(`\n  CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS test (\n    id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,\n    name TEXT\n  );\n`);\n```\n\n*Work in progress: We plan to expand this API to allow sharing of the worker PGlite across browser tabs.*\n\n### Importing and exporting with `COPY TO/FROM`\n\nPGlite has support importing and exporting via `COPY TO/FROM` by using a virtual `/dev/blob` device.\n\nTo import a file pass the `File` or `Blob` in the query options as `blob`, and copy from the `/dev/blob` device.\n\n```ts\nawait pg.query(\"COPY my_table FROM '/dev/blob';\", [], {\n  blob: MyBlob\n})\n```\n\nTo export a table or query to a file you just have to write to the `/dev/blob` device, the file will be retied as `blob` on the query results:\n\n```ts\nconst ret = await pg.query(\"COPY my_table TO '/dev/blob';\")\n// ret.blob is a `Blob` object with the data from the copy.\n```\n\n## Extensions\n\nPGlite supports the pl/pgsql procedural language extension, this is included and enabled by default.\n\nIn future we plan to support additional extensions, see the [roadmap](#roadmap).\n\n## ORM support.\n\n- Drizzle ORM supports PGlite, see [their docs here](https://orm.drizzle.team/docs/get-started-postgresql#pglite).\n\n## How it works\n\nPostgreSQL typically operates using a process forking model; whenever a client initiates a connection, a new process is forked to manage that connection. However, programs compiled with Emscripten - a C to WebAssembly (WASM) compiler - cannot fork new processes, and operates strictly in a single-process mode. As a result, PostgreSQL cannot be directly compiled to WASM for conventional operation.\n\nFortunately, PostgreSQL includes a \"single user mode\" primarily intended for command-line usage during bootstrapping and recovery procedures. Building upon this capability, PGlite introduces a input/output pathway that facilitates interaction with PostgreSQL when it is compiled to WASM within a JavaScript environment.\n\n## Limitations\n\n- PGlite is single user/connection.\n\n## Roadmap\n\nPGlite is *Alpha* and under active development, the current roadmap is:\n\n- CI builds [#19](https://github.com/electric-sql/pglite/issues/19)\n- Support Postgres extensions, starting with:\n  - pgvector [#18](https://github.com/electric-sql/pglite/issues/18)\n  - PostGIS [#11](https://github.com/electric-sql/pglite/issues/11)\n- OPFS support in browser [#9](https://github.com/electric-sql/pglite/issues/9)\n- Muti-tab support in browser [#32](https://github.com/electric-sql/pglite/issues/32)\n- Syncing via [ElectricSQL](https://electric-sql.com) with a Postgres server [electric/#1058](https://github.com/electric-sql/electric/pull/1058) \n\n## Repository Structure\n\nThe PGlite project is split into two parts:\n\n- `/packages/pglite`\n  The TypeScript package for PGlite\n- `/postgres` _(git submodule)_\n  A fork of Postgres with changes to enable compiling to WASM:\n  [/electric-sql/postgres-wasm](https://github.com/electric-sql/postgres-wasm)\n\nPlease use the [issues](https://github.com/electric-sql/pglite/issues/) in this main repository for filing issues related to either part of PGlite.
