Defaults to the current directory (`.`). Valid values are listed in **`cs-helper-create --help`** (for example `cursor`, `claude`). In **interactive** mode with a TTY, you get a multiselect if you do not pass **`--ai`**. In **non-interactive** mode (e.g. CI), omit **`--ai`** to skip AI files, or pass one or more **`--ai <tool>`** flags.\n\n#### Keeping AI assistant files up to date\n\nEach ai-addon file scaffolded by `cs-helper-create` (e.g. `CLAUDE.md`, `.cursor/rules/metric-insights-custom-script.mdc`) embeds a hidden `cs-helper-addon-version` marker recording which cs-helper version generated it. When you run `npm run build` (`cs-helper <entry>`), the CLI checks that marker against the installed cs-helper version and prints a console warning if a file looks out of date—either because it was generated by an older version, or because it predates version tracking entirely.\n\nTo refresh the AI assistant files in an existing project without re-scaffolding, run `--update-ai` inside it:\n\n```shell\n# Refresh whichever AI assistant files are already present (auto-detected)\nnpx cs-helper-create --update-ai .\n\n# Refresh (or add) specific tools\nnpx cs-helper-create --update-ai --ai claude --ai cursor .\n```\n\n`--update-ai` requires an existing `package.json` in the target directory (it reads `name`/`version`/`description` from it, so it doesn't prompt), and overwrites the selected tools' files in place.\n\n### Sanity checking custom scripts\n\n`npm run build` (`cs-helper <entry>`) statically analyzes your entry file (and its transitive relative imports) for common correctness issues and prints them as non-fatal warnings before compiling—your build never fails because of them. Checks include:\n\n- **`no-console`** — `console.log/warn/error/info/debug(...)` output isn't visible in Metric Insights; use `cs.log(...)`/`cs.error(...)`.\n- **`require-cs-close`** — no `cs.close()` call found anywhere; every run must end by calling it.\n- **`cs-close-not-deferred`** — `cs.close()` called directly instead of inside a `setTimeout(...)` callback.\n- **`script-timeout-param`** (info) — none of the script's `parseParams<T>()` calls declare a `scriptTimeout` field (checked across the whole file set, so one call declaring it is enough even if others don't). A self-managed timeout is still recommended for graceful handling, but not required — newer MI instances can enforce their own admin-configured \"Terminate run after\" wall-clock limit independently of script code.\n- **`raw-http-to-mi-backend`** — a raw `fetch`/`XMLHttpRequest`/`$.ajax` call whose URL clearly targets the MI backend (`cs.homeSite`, or a bare `/api/...` path); use `cs.runApiRequest` instead. Raw HTTP to third-party APIs is not flagged.\n- **`parse-params-non-scalar`** — a `parseParams<T>()` field that isn't `string | number | boolean` (MI only passes scalar values).\n- **`unguarded-window-context`** — `window.req`/`window.user` accessed without a feature-detection guard earlier in the file (info-level; both are only conditionally present).\n- **`v6-unsupported-builtin`** — when building for v6 (no `--v7`), APIs not covered by cs-helper's small manual polyfill set (e.g. `Array.from`, `Object.entries`, `String.prototype.padStart`).\n- **`manual-token-header-override`** — a hardcoded `token` header value, or a direct `cs.apiToken = ...` assignment. The injected token expires (~10 minutes on average); refresh it via `GET /api/get_token` instead of hardcoding it.\n- **`runapirequest-promise-missing-handler`** — a `new Promise((resolve, reject) => {...})` wrapping `cs.runApiRequest` where `resolve`/`reject` are never referenced at all (called directly, or passed by value as a callback, e.g. `{ success: resolve, error: reject }`) — the promise may never settle.\n- **`require-heartbeat-in-long-loop`** (info) — a `for`/`while`/`do`/`for-of`/`for-in` loop that calls something but has no `cs.log`/`cs.runApiRequest`/`cs.updateHeartBeat` call inside it (only these refresh the ~1 minute inactivity watchdog). Loops with no calls at all (pure arithmetic/assignment) aren't flagged. Collapsed to one finding per file, not one per loop.\n- **`missing-token-refresh-for-long-script`** (info) — repeated `cs.runApiRequest` calls inside a loop with no `GET /api/get_token` reference anywhere in the file.\n- **`node-only-api`** — `require('fs')` (or another Node builtin), `process.env`/`process.argv`, or `__dirname`/`__filename`; custom scripts run in the browser (PhantomJS/Puppeteer), not Node.\n- **`no-password-in-log`** — a `parseParams` field marked `@password` passed into `cs.log`/`cs.error`/`cs.result`/`console.*`.\n- **`v6-jquery-legacy-ajax-promise`** — `.done`/`.fail`/`.always` chained on `cs.runApiRequest(...)` under v6; v6's bundled jQuery 1.2.x doesn't return a Deferred/jqXHR object (added in jQuery 1.5).\n- **`no-eval`** — `eval(...)` or `new Function(...)`.\n\n#### Ignoring findings\n\nA finding can be a deliberate, verified exception (e.g. a third-party call the `raw-http-to-mi-backend` heuristic can't tell apart, or a loop you've confirmed is short enough to skip a heartbeat call). Suppress it inline, in a comment (either `//` or `/* */`):\n\n- **`cs-helper-disable-next-line [rule-id[, rule-id2, ...]]`** — suppresses finding(s) on the following line. No rule ids = suppress everything on that line.\n- **`cs-helper-disable-line [rule-id[, ...]]`** — suppresses finding(s) on the same line as the comment.\n- **`cs-helper-disable-file [rule-id[, ...]]`** — suppresses for the rest of that file, including file-level findings that carry no line at all (`require-cs-close`, `script-timeout-param`, `missing-token-refresh-for-long-script`). No rule ids = suppress everything in the file.\n\n```typescript\n// cs-helper-disable-next-line no-console\nconsole.log('deliberate - only visible during local debugging, stripped before release');\n```\n\nEach directive only applies to the file it's written in—a `cs-helper-disable-file` comment in an imported module doesn't affect the entry file or other imports. There's no ESLint-style ranged `/* cs-helper-enable */`—`cs-helper-disable-file` already covers \"turn a rule off for this whole file\".\n\nTo turn a rule off across the whole project instead of per-line, add a `csHelperCheck.disable` array to `package.json`:\n\n```json\n{\n  \"csHelperCheck\": {\n    \"disable\": [\"require-heartbeat-in-long-loop\", \"no-eval\"]\n  }\n}\n```\n\nThis applies to both `npm run build` and `cs-helper-check`. The standalone CLI also accepts an ad-hoc `--disable <rule-id[,rule-id2,...]>` flag (e.g. for a one-off CI run), which is unioned with the `package.json` list.\n\nRun the same checks on demand (e.g. in CI) without doing a full build:\n\n```shell\nnpx cs-helper-check <path-to-entry.js> [--v7] [--format text|json]\n```\n\nExits `1` if any `error`-severity finding exists, `0` otherwise. `--v7` is inferred from your `package.json`'s `build` script when omitted.\n\n**Example (non-interactive):**\n\n```shell\nnpx -p @metricinsights/cs-helper cs-helper-create -t custom-script-ts -n my-script -d \"My custom script\" -v 1.0.0 ./my-script\n```\n\n**Example with AI assistant files (repeat `--ai` for multiple tools):**\n\n```shell\nnpx -p @metricinsights/cs-helper cs-helper-create -t custom-script-ts -n my-script -d \"My custom script\" -v 1.0.0 --ai cursor --ai claude ./my-script\n```\n\n### Basic usage\n\n```javascript\nimport { cs, parseParams } from '@metricinsights/cs-helper';\n\nconst parsedParams = parseParams({ defaultValue: 1 });\n// Merged object: defaults plus any keys from cs.parameters (runtime wins on conflicts)\n\nsetTimeout(() => {\n  cs.close();\n}, 1000);\n```\n\n### `parseParams`\n\nUse **`parseParams(defaultParams?)`** to combine **default values** you define in code with **runtime parameters** from the host (**`cs.parameters`**). Merge order is: start from `defaultParams`, then apply **`cs.parameters`** so values configured for the script in Metric Insights override defaults for the same keys.\n\nThe function returns that merged object and also assigns it to **`cs.parsedParams`** (and to the same property on the global object in browser-like environments) so the resolved map is available everywhere without passing it manually.\n\nIn **TypeScript**, pass an explicit generic so the build can document your parameters accurately:\n\n```typescript\nconst params = parseParams<{\n  region: string;\n  limit: number;\n  enabled: boolean;\n}>({\n  region: 'us',\n  limit: 100,\n  enabled: true,\n});\n```\n\nOnly **`string`**, **`number`**, and **`boolean`** values are supported for parameter types (MI passes scalar values). At build time, the cs-helper CLI scans `parseParams` usage to generate the **Params Base64** banner block and the parameter tables in the [Build Output](#build-output) section—see **Params Base64** there for what is embedded.\n\n#### Marking special fields (`Password`, `ScriptTimeout`)\n\nTwo exported types let the build tooling recognize a field's special role, independent of what you name it—structurally they're just `string`/`number`, so nothing changes at runtime:\n\n```typescript\nimport { parseParams, Password, ScriptTimeout } from '@metricinsights/cs-helper';\n\nconst params = parseParams<{\n  apiKey: Password; // rendered as a masked/secret input in MI's config UI\n  maxRuntimeMs: ScriptTimeout; // this script's wall-clock safety timeout - see \"Finishing runs\"\n}>({\n  maxRuntimeMs: 10 * 60 * 1000,\n});\n```\n\n- **`Password`** — marks a `string` field as a secret. (This replaces writing a bare `@password` JSDoc comment on the field, which still works but is easy to misread as just a description.)\n- **`ScriptTimeout`** — marks a `number` field as this script's own safety-timeout value (see [Finishing runs](#finishing-runs-close-scripttimeout)). The build uses its default value, when statically resolvable, to compute `suggestedTimeoutMinutes` in the Params Base64 block—see [Build Output](#build-output).\n\n**JavaScript** can't reference these types (no generics)—use the `@password <fieldName>` / `@scriptTimeout <fieldName>` JSDoc tags instead, alongside your `@type` tag:\n\n```javascript\n/**\n * @type {{apiKey: string; maxRuntimeMs: number;}}\n * @password apiKey\n * @scriptTimeout maxRuntimeMs\n */\nconst params = parseParams({ maxRuntimeMs: 10 * 60 * 1000 });\n```\n\n### Entity-page request context (`window.req`, `window.user`)\n\nTwo globals may be available depending on how the script was invoked—always feature-detect before use, neither is guaranteed present:\n\n- **`window.req?: string`** — present only when the custom script is invoked from an entity page request, and only if that entity page explicitly passes it through. Absent for scheduled runs, digests, and any entity page that doesn't pass it.\n- **`window.user?: CustomScriptRequestUser`** — present only on Metric Insights instances **7.2.2 and later**. This is the user **making the request** through the custom script entity (e.g. viewing the entity page)—**not** the user configured to run the script. `CustomScriptRequestUser` (and `CustomScriptRequestUserGroup`) are exported from `@metricinsights/cs-helper` and describe the shape (`user_id`, `username`, `email`, `display_name`, `is_administrator`/`is_power_user`/`is_manage_pages_privilege` as `'Y' | 'N'`, `groups`, and an untyped `attributes: unknown[]`).\n\n```typescript\nimport type { CustomScriptRequestUser } from '@metricinsights/cs-helper';\n\nif (typeof window.req === 'string') {\n  cs.log(`Entity request id: ${window.req}`);\n}\n\nif (window.user) {\n  const requestingUser: CustomScriptRequestUser = window.user;\n  cs.log(`Requested by ${requestingUser.display_name} (${requestingUser.email})`);\n}\n```\n\n### Inactivity watchdog (`heartBeat` / `updateHeartBeat`)\n\nWhen you build with cs-helper, the bundled wrapper tracks script activity via **`cs.heartBeat`** and refreshes it automatically on successful **`cs.runApiRequest`**, on **`cs.log`**, and while waiting for a slow API response.\n\nIf nothing refreshes the watchdog for too long (typically about **one minute**), Metric Insights ends the run as hung. Schedule **`close`** inside a short **`setTimeout`** (for example **500–1000 ms**) so MI can flush **`cs.result`** and log lines first—see the scaffold templates for a **`scheduleClose()`** helper.\n\nIndependently of the inactivity watchdog, keep a **maximum wall-clock limit** using a **`scriptTimeout`** parameter (**milliseconds**) and a safety timer started at load time. In TypeScript, type the field as **`ScriptTimeout`** (see [Marking special fields](#marking-special-fields-password-scripttimeout))—the build then surfaces its default in the Params Base64 block regardless of what you name the field.\n\n**Native MI timeout (newer instances):** some Metric Insights versions add an admin-configured \"Terminate run after\" setting on the custom script itself. When set, MI enforces it independently of your code—after that many minutes it calls `customScript.result(\"run timed out\")` then `customScript.close()`, and separately caps the underlying render. This value isn't exposed to script code (no parameter, no `cs`/`customScript` field carries it), so a self-managed `scriptTimeout` remains the only way to get graceful, script-specific handling before that harsher cutoff—but it's no longer strictly required to avoid an unbounded hung run.\n\n### Backend HTTP requests (`runApiRequest`)\n\nUse **`cs.runApiRequest(url, settings?)`** for Metric Insights backend APIs. This helps verify the source code hasn't changed.\n- **Checksum**: SHA-256 hash (first 16 hex chars) of the built output file. To verify the built file hasn't been modified, replace the checksum value with `0000000000000000` in the banner, then hash the file; the result should match the stored checksum.\n- **Params Base64**: Base64-encoded JSON containing structured parameter metadata extracted from all `parseParams` calls in your code. This includes parameter names, types, default values, required flags, available values (for enum-like parameters), and descriptions. The encoded data can be decoded to access parameter information programmatically. When a field is marked `ScriptTimeout` (or `@scriptTimeout` in JS—see [Marking special fields](#marking-special-fields-password-scripttimeout)) and its default value is statically resolvable to a number of milliseconds, the payload also includes a top-level `suggestedTimeoutMinutes` (rounded minutes)—optional/additive, safe for existing consumers of this JSON to ignore if they don't use it.\n\nAll metadata is included automatically in the banner when building your custom script.\n\n### Verifying the Checksum\n\nThe checksum ensures the built file hasn't been modified after build.
