them.\n\nThe goal is to let you work with large, connected data structures through a\nnormal object API without paying the full parse cost up front.\n\n```js\nimport Parser from Referenced objects are parsed on access.\nconsole.log(root.articles[0].title)\n\nconsole.log(stringify(buffer))\n```\n\n## Why od-jsontag exists\n\n`od-jsontag` was made for data that is too connected and too large to comfortably\nparse as one regular JSON document, but still wants to be used like ordinary\nJavaScript objects.\n\nJSON is excellent when you want to load a complete tree. It is less ideal when:\n\n- the file is large;\n- most requests only touch a small part of the data;\n- many objects reference the same object;\n- the data needs to be shared between workers;\n- identity matters, so repeated references should point at the same object;\n- you want to preserve JSONTag metadata such as types and attributes.\n\n`od-jsontag` approaches this by splitting a graph into lines. Line `0` is the\nroot. Other lines are objects that can be referenced by `~1`, `~2`, and so on.\nThe parser can scan the file and create lightweight proxies for each line, or it\ncan use a supplied line index and skip the scan entirely. With an index, only the\nroot line is parsed at first; referenced lines become proxies and parse lazily\nwhen accessed.\n\nThis is especially useful with `SharedArrayBuffer`, because the same serialized\ndata can be shared with workers without copying the full object graph into each\nworker.\n\n## When to use it\n\nUse `od-jsontag` when you have large, mostly-read object graphs and only a\nfraction of the objects are needed for a given operation.\n\nGood fits:\n\n- large JSONTag datasets where references and identity matter;\n- read-heavy applications that open a large data file and inspect small parts;\n- worker-based Node.js applications sharing data through `SharedArrayBuffer`;\n- graph-like data where the same entity appears from many paths;\n- data with JSONTag object attributes, typed values, or non-enumerable\n  properties;\n- applications that need access control hooks around object properties.\n\n## When not to use it\n\nDo not use `od-jsontag` just because a file is JSON-shaped. For small files,\n`JSON.parse` or `JSONTag.parse` will usually be simpler and faster.\n\nIt is probably not the right fit when:\n\n- you always need the full dataset immediately;\n- your data is a plain tree with no shared references or identity concerns;\n- you need broad query/filter/aggregate operations over millions of rows;\n- you need a stable cross-language binary format;\n- you need transactional updates, indexing, and persistence like a database.\n\nFor analytical workloads that scan a few fields across many similar objects, a\ncolumnar format or database may be a better match. `od-jsontag` is intentionally\nobject-oriented: it optimizes lazy object access, not column scans.\n\n## Core ideas\n\n### One object per line\n\nSerialized output is a newline-separated sequence of length-prefixed JSONTag\nvalues:\n\n```text\n(23){\"foo\":[~1],\"bar\":[~2]}\n(57)<object class=\"foo\" id=\"1\">{\"name\":\"Foo\",#\"hidden\":\"bar\"}\n(57)<object class=\"bar\" id=\"2\">{\"name\":\"Bar\",\"children\":[~1]}\n```\n\nEach line starts with `(N)`, where `N` is the byte length of the JSONTag value\nafter the prefix. References use `~lineNumber`.\n\nSee [docs/data-format.md](docs/data-format.md) for a simple explanation of the\nformat.\n\n### Lazy proxies\n\n`parse()` returns a proxy for the root value. Referenced objects are represented\nby proxies as well. The object body is parsed only when code reads a property,\nenumerates keys, checks `in`, defines a property, deletes a property, or performs\nanother operation that needs the object contents.\n\n```js\nconst root = parser.parse(buffer)\n\n// Parses root, then the referenced object at line 1.\nconsole.log(root.foo[0].name)\n```\n\n### Optional line index\n\nIf you already have an index of line number to byte positions, pass it as the\nsecond argument to `parse()`:\n\n```js\nconst index = [\n  [0, 28],\n  [29, 98],\n  [99, 161]\n]\n\nconst root = parser.parse(buffer, JSON.stringify(index))\n```\n\nThe index is an array or an object keyed by record number. Each entry is a\n`[start, end]` byte range in the data file, with an exclusive end. Sparse changeset\nindexes keep their original record numbers. It can be supplied as:\n\n- an already parsed array or record-number object;\n- a JSON string;\n- a `Uint8Array` containing JSON.\n\nThe default parser has no Node imports. For indexed reads it also accepts a\nbyte source with `byteLength` and a synchronous `read(start, end)` method that\nreturns exactly that range as a `Uint8Array`. See [portability](docs/portability.md)\nfor the source contract and runtime requirements.\n\nFor Node file descriptors and index-file paths, use the Node entry point:\n\n```js\nimport Parser from '@muze-nl/od-jsontag/src/node.mjs'\nimport {openSync, closeSync} from 'node:fs'\n\nconst parser = new Parser()\nconst dataFd = openSync('data.odjt', 'r')\n\ntry {\n  const root = parser.parse(dataFd, 'data.odjt.index.json')\n  console.log(root.foo[0].name)\n}\nfinally {\n  closeSync(dataFd)\n}\n```\n\nKeep every source descriptor open, and its bytes unchanged, while the parser or\nits proxies are in use. The parser does not own or close descriptors. Repeated\n`parse(fd, index)` calls overlay records at their existing numbers; untouched\nrecords keep their previous file source. Buffer patches also work on indexed\nviews. Use separate parsers for independently retained historical snapshots.\n\nRead-only parsers cache up to 256 clean decoded records by default:\n\n```js\nparser.cacheSize = 128\nconsole.log(parser.cacheInfo())\nparser.clearCache()\n```\n\nEvicted records reload when accessed; live object proxies keep their identity.\nThe bound covers decoded record bodies, not the record index, caller-retained\narrays/values, or edits. Mutable sessions retain touched records until the session\nis discarded or their updates are applied. See the [reference](docs/reference.md)\nfor lifetime and error semantics.\n\n## Mutability\n\nParsers are immutable by default:\n\n```js\nconst parser = new Parser()\nconst root = parser.parse(buffer)\n\nroot.name = 'New name' // throws\n```\n\nCreate a mutable parser by passing `false` as the second constructor argument or\nby setting `parser.immutable = false`:\n\n```js\nconst parser = new Parser(undefined, false)\nconst root = parser.parse(buffer)\n\nroot.name = 'New name'\n```\n\nChanged objects are serialized again. Unchanged parsed proxies can copy their\noriginal byte range back into the output.\n\n## Access control\n\nYou can install an access hook on `parser.meta.access`:\n\n```js\nconst parser = new Parser()\n\nparser.meta.access = (object, property, method) => {\n  return property === 'name'\n}\n\nconst root = parser.parse(buffer)\n\nconsole.log(root.name)  // allowed\nconsole.log(root.secret) // undefined\n```\n\nThe `method` argument is usually one of:\n\n- `get`\n- `set`\n- `has`\n- `deleteProperty`\n- `defineProperty`\n\nAccess denial returns `undefined` or `false`, depending on the proxy operation.\n\n## Serialization\n\nUse `serialize(value, options)` to create the od-jsontag byte representation.\nIt returns a `Uint8Array` backed by a `SharedArrayBuffer` when available, or an\n`ArrayBuffer` otherwise. For large output,\n`serializeChunks(value, options)` yields framed `Uint8Array` chunks incrementally\nwithout allocating the entire serialized dataset.
