[Using The API with Kubernetes](#Using-The-API-with-Kubernetes)\n\n## Overview\nThe esp-connect package enables you to communicate with a SAS Event Stream Processing (ESP) server using Javascript objects.\n\nThe API works with ESP standalone servers (such as simple command line startup) as well as with the [ESP Kubernetes Cloud\nEcosystem](https://github.com/sassoftware/esp-kubernetes/tree/develop).\n\n**NOTE** While esp-connect should work with an ESP 6.2 server, it was designed specifically to work with the ESP 7.x+ websocket interface.\n\n## API Objects\n### The ServerConnection Object\nIn order to communicate with an ESP server, you need to create a ServerConnection object.\nThis is a persistent connection to the ESP server. \nIf you are running under a browser, you do this as shown below (make sure you call the *init()* function on page load):\n```javascript\n...\n\n<script type=\"text/javascript\">\nvar _esp = null;\n</script>\n\n<!-- Run from an esp-connect install -->\n<link rel=\"stylesheet\" href=\"../../style/connect.css\" />\n<script type=\"module\">\nimport {connect} from \"../../js/connect/connect.js\";\n_esp = connect;\n</script>\n\n<script type=\"text/javascript\">\n\nfunction\ninit()\n{\n    _esp.connect(\"http://espsrv01:7777\",{ready:initialize});\n}\n\nfunction\ninitialize(connection)\n{\n    // you can use the connection now\n}\n\n..\n\n```\n\nIt is slightly different if you are running under Nnde.js:\n```javascript\nimport {connect as esp} from \"@sassoftware/esp-connect\";\n\nesp.connect(\"http://espsrv01:7777\",{ready:initialize});\n\nfunction\ninitialize(connection)\n{\n    // you can use the connection now\n}\n```\n\nThe API uses this connection to communicate with the ESP server. \nYou must provide a connection delegate to the connect call so that the the system can notify you when the connection has\nbeen established. The connection delegate can implement the following methods:\n\n* *ready* - invoked when the connection has been established and the handshake is complete\n* *closed* - invoked when the connection has closed\n\nThis connection is used to monitor the health of the server. If the server goes down\nwhile the connection is active, the API will wait for the server to return. When the server comes back, the *ready* property of the connection delegate will be\ncalled so that the client can use the new connection to perform initialization.\n\n* **Methods**\n    * *getEventCollection(options)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Create and return a <a href=\"https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/Promise\" target=\"_blank\">Promise</a>\n            that will create an EventCollection object.\n        * **Option  Parameters**\n            * *window* - the path of the ESP window, i.e. project/contquery/window.\n            * *pagesize* -the page size for the collection (defaults to 50).\n            * *filter* - the functional filter for the collection.\n            * *interval* - The time, in milliseconds, for the server to wait before delivering any events that occurred. If this is not specified, the interval defaults to 1 second.\n        * **Returns**\n            * A Promise to return an EventCollection object\n        * **Examples**\n            ```javascript\n            conn.getEventCollection({window:\"secondary/cq/brokerAlertsAggr\"}).then(\n                function(collection) {\n                    // now use the collection.\n                },\n                function(error) {\n                    console.log(error);\n                }\n            );\n\n            conn.getEventCollection({window:\"secondary/cq/venueAlertsAggr\",filter:\"in($city,'raleigh','atlanta')}).then\n                function(collection) {\n                    // now use the collection.\n                },\n                function(error) {\n                    console.log(error);\n                }\n            );\n            ```\n\n    * *getEventStream(options)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Create and return a <a href=\"https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/Promise\" target=\"_blank\">Promise</a>\n            that will create an EventStream object.\n        * **Option  Parameters**\n            * *window* - the path of the ESP window, i.e. project/contquery/window.\n            * *maxevents* - the maximumn number of events to store (defaults to 100).\n            * *interval* - The time, in milliseconds, for the server to wait before delivering any events that occurred. The view of the collection into the ESP window is defined by the current *page*.\nWhen an event collection is created, it sets the page size for that collection. This determines the maximum number of events that will be\nsent from the server to the client. In addition, the server sets up an internal pub/sub instance to receive events for that window. If an event\noccurs that is not in the current page, that event is ignored. Otherwise, the event is delivered to the client.\n\nYou create event collections through the ServerConnection object.\n```javascript\nconn.getEventCollection({window:\"secondary/cq/brokerAlertsAttr\"}).then(\n    function(alerts) {\n        ...\n    }\n);\n```\nThe event collection manages itself and delivers change events to its delegates. If you are interested in receiving collection change notifications,\nyou must register a delegate that implements the *dataChanged* method:\n```javascript\nfunction\nhandle(collection,data,clear)\n{\n    console.log(\"data changed: \" + JSON.stringify(data,null,\"\\t\"));\n}\n\nconn.getEventCollection({window:\"secondary/cq/brokerAlertsAttr\"}).then(\n    function(alerts) {\n        alerts.addDelegate({dataChanged:handle});\n    }\n);\n```\n\nThe *dataChanged* method receives the collection that changed along with the new data in the *data* parameter. If the collection was cleared of data,\nthe *clear* parameter is set to *true*.\n\n* **Methods**\n    * *addDelegate(delegate)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Add a delegate to receive collection change notifications. The delegate must implement the *dataChanged* method.\n        * **Parameters**\n            * *delegate* - The object to receive change notifications.\n    * *removeDelegate(delegate)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Remove a delegate from the collection.\n        * **Parameters**\n            * *delegate* - The delegate to remove.\n    * *getData()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Return the current collection of events. The data is a dictionary of objects representing the ESP events keyed by the event keys.\n        * **Returns**\n            * The collection event data. \n    * *getList()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Return the current collection of events as an array. The data is an of array of objects.\n        * **Returns**\n            * The collection event data as an array of objects.\n    * *setFilter(filter)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Set the functional filter to use on the events in the ESP window. For example, to see only stock trades with a price greater than 200:\n            ```javascript\n            coll.setFilter(\"gt($price,200)\");\n            ```\n    * *load()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Load the current page of events from the server. The events are delivered to the delegates via *dataChanged()*.\n    * *first()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Load the first page of events from the server. The events are delivered to the delegates via *dataChanged()*.\n    * *last()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Load the last page of events from the server. The events are delivered to the delegates via *dataChanged()*.\n    * *next()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Load the next page of events from the server. The events are delivered to the delegates via *dataChanged()*.\n    * *prev()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Load the previous page of events from the server. The events are delivered to the delegates via *dataChanged()*.\n    * *play()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Set the state of the collection to playing. This means that the server will deliver events to the client when they occur. If the \n                state is changed from paused to playing, the server will send an initial page load.\n    * *pause()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Set the state of the collection to paused. This means that the server will not deliver events to the client when they occur. \n\n\n\n### The EventStream Object\nAn event stream is a flow of events similar to a UNIX tail. When an event occurs in the ESP model in the server, it is placed into the stream. The clients\ncan read this stream and see the events as they occur. If a window produces a huge number of events, you can throttle the number of events that get put\ninto the stream by specifying *maxevents* and *interval*. The *maxevents* property limits the number of events that will get put into the\nstream at any one time. The *interval* property specifies a time, in milliseconds, that the ESP server will wait before putting events into the stream.\nSo, if you set *maxevents* to 1000, and *interval* to 1000 ms (or 1 second), then the server will collect events from the pub/sub interface for 1 second.\nIf more than *maxevents* events occur in that time, the oldest are dropped and will not be put into the stream. At the end of 1 second, the server puts all\nevents it has into the stream. For clients that have heavy processing duties (graph rendering for example), this allows the client to limit the number of events\nit must process (as long as a sampling of events is sufficient).\n\nIf you are not interested in *delete* events, you can specify *ignore_delete=true* when creating the event stream. This will throw away any delete events the\nstream receives.\n\nYou create event streams through the ServerConnection object.\n```javascript\nconn.getEventStream({window:\"primary/cq/counter\",maxevents:20}).then(\n    function(alerts) {\n        ...\n    }\n);\n```\nThe event stream delivers change events to its delegates. If you are interested in receiving stream change notifications,\nyou must register a delegate that implements the *dataChanged* method:\n```javascript\nfunction\nhandle(collection,data,clear)\n{\n    console.log(\"data changed: \" + JSON.stringify(data,null,\"\\t\"));\n}\n\nconn.getEventStream({window:\"secondary/cq/brokerAlertsAttr\"}).then(\n    function(alerts) {\n        alerts.addDelegate({dataChanged:handle});\n    }\n);\n```\n\nThe *dataChanged* method receives the collection that changed along with the new data in the *data* parameter. If the collection was cleared of data,\nthe *clear* parameter is set to *true*\n\n* **Methods**\n    * *addDelegate(delegate)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Add a delegate to receive stream change notifications. The delegate must implement the *dataChanged* method.\n        * **Parameters**\n            * *delegate* - The object to receive change notifications.\n    * *removeDelegate(delegate)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Remove a delegate from the stream .\n        * **Parameters**\n            * *delegate* - The delegate to remove.\n    * *getList()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Return the current stream of events as an array. The data is an of array of objects.\n        * **Returns**\n            * The event stream data as an array of objects.\n    * *setFilter(filter)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Set the functional filter to use on the events in the ESP window. For example, to see only stock trades with a price greater than 200:\n```javascript\ncoll.setFilter(\"gt($price,200)\");\n```\n\n### The Publisher Object\nThe Publisher object allows you to publish events into an ESP source window. You can add data to the send queue either by one or more sequences \nof *begin(), set(), end()* calls, or by using the *add()* method which adds an object to the send queue directly. The publisher stores the objects \nto be published until the *publish()* method is called.\n\nThe first method:\n```javascript\nconn.getPublisher({window:\"p/cq/uievents\"}).then(\n    function(publisher) {\n        publisher.begin();\n        publisher.set(\"x\",mouse.x);\n        publisher.set(\"y\",mouse.y);\n        publisher.set(\"type\",\"click\");\n        publisher.end();\n        publisher.publish();\n        publisher.close();\n    }\n);\n```\nand the second:\n```javascript\n\nconn.getPublisher({window:\"p/cq/uievents\"}).then(\n    function(publisher) {\n        publisher.add({\"x\":mouse.x,\"y\":mouse.y,\"type\":\"move\");\n        publisher.add({\"x\":mouse.x,\"y\":mouse.y,\"type\":\"click\");\n        publisher.publish();\n        publisher.close();\n    }\n);\n```\n* **Methods**\n    * *begin()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Initialize the current data.\n    * *set(name,value)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Set a field value in the current data.\n        * **Parameters**\n            * *name* - the name of the field to set.\n            * *value* - the value of the field.\n    * *end()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Close input to the current data and add it to the publish list.\n    * *add(data)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Add data to the publish list.\n        * **Parameters**\n            * *data* - the data object to add the the publish list.\n    * *publish()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Publish the publish list into the ESP source window.\n    * *publishCsv(data,options)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Publish CSV data into an ESP source window.\n        * **Parameters**\n            * *data* - the CSV data.\n        * **Option Parameters**\n            * *pause* - the interval, in milliseconds, to pause between events (defaults to 0).\n            * *close* - boolean value determining whether to close the publisher when the publishing of the data has completed (defaults to false).\n\n### The Stats Object\n\nThe Stats object allows you to monitor ESP server stats such as memory usage and CPU usage on a per window basis. \n\n#### The Stats Object Options\nThere are several properties you can set which determine how the Stats object reports data:\n* *interval* - the interval, in seconds, at which the server will send data to the client.\n* *mincpu* - the minimum CPU usage, in percentage, which will be reported (defaults to 5).\n* *memory* - boolean value determining whether to report memory usage information (defaults to true).\n* *counts* - boolean value determining whether to report window event counts (defaults to false).\n* *config* - boolean value determining whether to report server config information (defaults to false).\nIn order to receive notifications when the stats data changes,\nyou must add a delegate object which implements the *handleStats(s,data,memory)* method:\n\n```javascript\nfunction\nhandle(stats)\n{\n    console.log(\"windows\");\n    console.log(\"\\t\" + JSON.stringify(stats.getWindows(),null,\"\\t\"));\n    console.log(\"memory\");\n    console.log(\"\\t\" + JSON.stringify(stats.getMemory(),null,\"\\t\"));\n}\n\nconn.getStats().addDelegate({dataChanged:handle});\n```\n#### Stats Windows Format\n```json\n[{\n    'project': 'primary',\n    'contquery': 'cq',\n    'window': 'transform',\n    'cpu': 100.598,\n    'interval': 1101676.0,\n    'count': 0,\n    '@key': 'primary.cq.transform'\n}, {\n    'project': 'primary',\n    'contquery': 'cq',\n    'window': 'rawTrades',\n    'cpu': 31.9233,\n    'interval': 1101676.0,\n    'count': 0,\n    '@key': 'primary.cq.rawTrades'\n}]\n```\n#### Stats Memory Format\n```json\n{\n    'system': 386696,\n    'virtual': 1452,\n    'resident': 241\n}\n```\nThe *stats* array contains cpu and window count information for any window that has CPU usage greater than the minimum value and/or a window event count that is greater than 0.\n\nThe *memory* object contains values for system, virtual, and resident memory currently being consumed in the ESP server.\n\n* **Methods**\n    * *addDelegate(delegate)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Add a delegate to receive stats change notifications. The delegate must implement the *handleStats(s,stats,memory)* method.\n        * **Parameters**\n            * *delegate* - The object to receive change notifications.\n    * *removeDelegate(delegate)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Remove a delegate from the Stats object.\n        * **Parameters**\n            * *delegate* - The delegate to remove.\n    * *setOpts(options)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Set a stats reporting option from the set of [options](#The-Stats-Object-Options).\n        * **Option  Parameters**\n            * Any option(s) from the supported set of [options](#The-Stats-Object-Options).\n    * *getWindows()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Return the windows statistic information in this [format](#Stats-Windows-Format).\n        * **Returns**\n            * The windows statistic information in this [format](#Stats-Windows-Format).\n    * *getMemoryData()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Return the memory information in this [format](#Stats-Memory-Format).\n        * **Returns**\n            * The memory information in this [format](#Stats-Memory-Format).\n    * *getConfig()*\n        * **Description**\n            * Return the config information.\n        * **Returns**\n            * The config information.\n\n### The Log Object\nThe Log object allows you to monitor ESP server logs.\n\nIn order to receive notifications when the stats data changes, you must add a delegate object which implements the *handleLog(log,message)* method:\n\n```javascript\nfunction\nhandleLog(log,message)\n{\n    console.log(\"got a message: \" + message);\n}\n\nconn.getLog().addDelegate({handleLog:handle});\n```\n\nThe parameters are:\n* *log* - the Log instance.\n* *message* - the log message.\n\n\n* **Methods**\n    * *addDelegate(delegate)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Add a delegate to receive log messages. The delegate must implement the *handleLog(log,message)* method.\n        * **Parameters**\n            * *delegate* - The object to receive log messages.\n    * *removeDelegate(delegate)*\n        * **Description**\n            * Remove a delegate from the Log instance.\n        * **Parameters**\n            * *delegate* - The delegate to remove.\n\n## Using The API with Kubernetes\nIt is very easy to use the esp-connect package in a Kubernetes (K8S) environment. For starters you must create the ESP K8S ecosystem described\n<a href=\"https://github.com/sassoftware/esp-kubernetes/tree/develop\" target=\"_blank\">here</a>.\n\nYou will need to communicate with a K8S API server in order to perform operations such as project creation and deletion. The preferred way to do this is to use a \n<a href=\"https://kubernetes.io/docs/tasks/extend-kubernetes/http-proxy-access-api\" target=\"_blank\">K8S proxy server</a>.\n\nThe proxy enables web-based components to communicate with K8S without experiencing issues with CORS (Cross Origin Resource Sharing).\n\n**NOTE** You will need to download and install the <a href=\"https://kubernetes.io/docs/tasks/tools/install-kubectl\" target=\"_blank\">kubectl</a> command to \nrun the proxy as well as perform other K8s-related tasks.\n\nThe kubectl command is used to start the proxy. The following starts a proxy which can be used to serve up the ESP connect web-based components including the examples, the model viewer, and the log viewer.\n```javascript\n$ kubectl proxy --disable-filter\n```\nThe proxy reads your K8S configuration so it handles the authentication with the API server. You can communicate directly with the server (from command line not web page) but you will \nneed to provide any necessary authentication info.\n\nESP server connections are initiated with URLs. For example, to retrieve the model for project trades from an ESP server running on espsrv01 at port 2222:\n```javascript\n_esp.connect(\"http://espsrv01:2222\",{ready:initialize});\n```\nSince this points directly to an ESP server it will not suffice in a K8S environment.\nA couple new protocols can be used to communicate with ESP servers in a K8S cluster.\n* k8s: - protocol for going directly to a K8S API server.\n```javascript\n_esp.connect(\"k8s://10.104.16.129:6443/myns/trades\",{ready:initialize});\n```\n* k8s-proxy: - protocol for going to a K8S proxy server.\n```javascript\n_esp.connect(\"k8s-proxy://localhost:8001/myns/trades\",{ready:initialize});\n```\nThe K8S url contains the host and port of the K8S server (or proxy) and the K8S namespace and ESP project name.\nThe different protocols are necessary because communications with the proxy server do not use TLS whereas those with the API server do.\n\nUsing these protocols tells the connect API that it is working with K8S which will allow it to send any necessary requests to the\nK8S server.\n","readmeFilename":"README.md"}
