App","maintainers":[{"name":"whiskee.chen","email":"whiskee.chen@evenrealities.com"},{"name":"carson.zhu","email":"carson.zhu@evenrealities.com"}],"readme":"# Even Terminal\n\n`even-terminal` is designed to be used with the Even App.\n\n> Building glasses-native apps instead of mirroring your laptop? See [@evenrealities/even_hub_sdk](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@evenrealities/even_hub_sdk).\n\nSupports macOS, Linux, Windows.\n\n---\n\n## Requirements\n\n- **Node.js 18+** — check with `node --version`. Install from [nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org), or `brew install node` (macOS), or your distro's package manager (Linux).\n- An **Even Realities G2** + **R1 ring**, paired through the Even app (iOS/Android).\n- Optional but recommended: a [Tailscale](https://tailscale.com) account signed in on both your laptop and phone — gives you a stable private network without needing the public-tunnel providers below.\n\n---\n\n## Install\n\n```bash\nnpm install -g @evenrealities/even-terminal\n```\n\nVerify the install:\n\n```bash\neven-terminal --version\n```\n\nUpdate to the latest release:\n\n```bash\nnpm install -g @evenrealities/even-terminal@latest\n```\n\n---\n\n## Quick Start\n\n```bash\neven-terminal\n```\n\nOn the first run, a four-step setup wizard covers the default agent, project\ndirectory, and phone connection, then generates a persistent pairing token. It\nstores the result in `~/.even-terminal/config.json`, then starts the foreground\nserver. Later runs reuse that configuration.\n\nUse the arrow keys, `k`/`j`, or `w`/`s` to move through wizard choices, then\npress Enter to confirm. Project-directory input accepts `~` for the home\ndirectory and prints the resolved absolute path after confirmation.\n\nThe configured project directory becomes the working directory for new\nsessions when the client omits `cwd`. Session listing remains unfiltered unless\nthe client explicitly supplies a `cwd` filter.\n\nThe default server port is `3456`.\n\nUseful startup options:\n\n```bash\neven-terminal --cwd /path/to/project\neven-terminal --port 8080\neven-terminal --token mytoken123\neven-terminal --name my-laptop\neven-terminal --provider codex\neven-terminal --lan\neven-terminal --allow-cors\neven-terminal --claude-use-system-cli\neven-terminal --claude-allowed-tools Read,Glob,Grep,ToolSearch\neven-terminal --config ~/.even-terminal/work.json\neven-terminal --expose pinggy\neven-terminal --expose bore\neven-terminal --expose ngrok\n```\n\n---\n\n## How it works\n\neven-terminal runs a local HTTP server on `:3456` (configurable through setup,\n`even-terminal config`, or `--port`), spawns your AI agent (Claude Code or\nCodex) as a child process, captures its streaming output, renders it onto the\nG2's 576×288 canvas, and translates R1 ring gestures back into keyboard events\nfor the agent.\n\nThe Even app connects to your laptop over your chosen transport. By default the server listens on all interfaces and advertises your detected LAN address (same Wi-Fi). Pass `--tailscale` to bind external access to your Tailscale IPv4 address (stable across networks, end-to-end WireGuard), or `-i <interface>` to bind external access to a specific network interface. Both modes retain a loopback listener for the local Claude/Codex CLI integrations. Use `--expose pinggy` / `--expose bore` / `--expose ngrok` to open a temporary public tunnel.\n\n```\n                       ┌──────────────────┐\n                       │   your laptop    │\n   [ claude / codex ] ─│   even-terminal  │\n                       │   :3456          │\n                       └────────┬─────────┘\n                                │\n                ┌───────────────┴───────────────┐\n                │   transport (pick one)        │\n                │   default: LAN (same Wi-Fi)   │\n                │   --tailscale                 │\n                │   --expose pinggy             │\n                │   --expose bore               │\n                │   --expose ngrok              │\n                └───────────────┬───────────────┘\n                                │\n                       ┌────────┴─────────┐\n                       │     Even app     │\n                       └──┬────────────┬──┘\n                       (display)     (input)\n                       BLE ↓          ↑ BLE\n                     ┌────┴────┐  ┌────┴────┐\n                     │   G2    │  │   R1    │\n                     │ 576×288 │  │  ring   │\n                     └─────────┘  └─────────┘\n```\n\nThe agent runs locally on *your* laptop, using either a bundled or system\nexecutable as described below. even-terminal is a renderer + input bridge.\n\n---\n\n## CLI\n\n```text\neven-terminal [command] [options]\n\nCommands:\n  even-terminal start\n  even-terminal config [key] [value]\n  even-terminal complete <shell>\n\nLocal network options:\n  --lan\n  --tailscale\n  -i, --interface, --if <name>\n\nQuick public expose options:\n  --expose <provider>   Quick public expose provider (`pinggy`, `bore`, `ngrok`)\n\nOptions:\n  -p, --port <n>\n  -t, --token <str>\n  -n, --name <str>\n  -d, --cwd <path>\n  --provider <name>   claude, claude-sync, codex (default: claude)\n  --config <path>     Use another persistent config file\n  --allow-cors        Allow cross-origin browser requests\n  --use-original-claude  Use the original Claude SDK provider without terminal/app synchronization\n  --claude-use-system-cli  Use the system Claude CLI for SDK sessions\n  --claude-allowed-tools <csv|none>  Replace Claude SDK auto-approved tools\n  --log-file <path>  Write logs to a file\n  --log-level <debug|info>  Control log-file detail only (default: debug)\n  --verbose  Print raw diagnostics to stdout only; does not change log files\n  -h, --help\n  -v, --version\n\nExamples:\n  even-terminal\n  even-terminal -p 8080\n  even-terminal -t mytoken123\n  even-terminal --expose pinggy\n  even-terminal --expose ngrok\n```\n\n## Setup and persistent configuration\n\nThe first-run wizard writes a versioned configuration file with permissions\n`0600` on macOS and Linux. The pairing token remains stable across restarts.\nThe wizard stores `claude` or `codex` as the default provider. Claude uses\nClaude Sync by default; pass `--use-original-claude` to opt out.\n\nRun the interactive config menu at any time:\n\n```bash\neven-terminal config\neven-terminal config --reset\n```\n\nScripts can update one parsed value without opening the menu:\n\n```bash\neven-terminal config provider codex\neven-terminal config cwd /path/to/project\neven-terminal config token 'new-token'\neven-terminal config network tailscale\neven-terminal config network interface:en0\neven-terminal config network expose:pinggy\neven-terminal config port 4567\neven-terminal config claudeUseSystemCli on\neven-terminal config claudeAllowedTools Read,Glob,Grep,ToolSearch\neven-terminal config claudeAllowedTools default\n```\n\n`config --reset` reruns the wizard while retaining the existing pairing token.\nTo rotate it, run `even-terminal config token '<new-token>'`. The next server\nstart prints a new QR code; use it to pair the client again.\n\nUse `--config <path>` for another profile. Relative paths resolve from the\ncurrent directory; `~/...` paths resolve from the home directory.\n\nStartup values follow this precedence:\n\n```text\nCLI flag > environment variable > config file > built-in default\n```\n\nFlags and environment variables affect the current process without rewriting\nthe selected config file. Invalid JSON, unknown fields, unsupported providers,\nand malformed network values fail before the server starts.\n\nCross-origin browser requests are disabled by default. Native Flutter clients\nand same-origin web clients are unaffected; pass `--allow-cors` only when a\ndifferent browser origin must call the server.\n\nThe setup wizard does not install or start a background service. Start the\nforeground server yourself with `even-terminal`; stop it with `Ctrl+C`.\n`even-terminal claude` and `even-terminal codex` connect to an already-running\nserver and report an error when none is available.\n\n## Logging\n\nLog files use `debug` detail by default, preserving raw SDK, app-server, SSE,\npermission, and question payloads. Opt into a smaller file with:\n\n```bash\neven-terminal --log-level info\n```\n\n`info` retains server and provider lifecycle events, HTTP and prompt summaries,\nsession state, usage, retries, warnings, and errors. `--verbose` is independent:\nit controls raw diagnostics on stdout only. For example, this keeps verbose\nstdout while writing an `info` log file:\n\n```bash\neven-terminal --verbose --log-level info\n```\n\nQuick public expose helpers are intended for simple temporary sharing, not long-term use.\nFor stable setups, prefer a proper network path such as Tailscale or a production tunnel configuration.\n\nCurrent quick expose providers:\n\n### pinggy\n\nNo install required — uses your system's SSH client. Just pass `--expose pinggy`.\n\nBehind the scenes:\n\n```bash\nssh -p 443 -R0:localhost:<port> a.pinggy.io\n```\n\nPinggy is a hosted SSH-tunnel service; the public URL appears in your terminal once the tunnel is up.\n\n### bore\n\nSelf-hostable, written in Rust. GitHub: [ekzhang/bore](https://github.com/ekzhang/bore).\n\nInstall:\n\n- **macOS:** `brew install bore-cli` *(or)* `cargo install bore-cli`\n- **Linux:** `cargo install bore-cli` *(or)* download a prebuilt binary from [releases](https://github.com/ekzhang/bore/releases) and put `bore` on your `$PATH`\n- **Windows:** download `bore-vX.Y.Z-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc.zip` from [releases](https://github.com/ekzhang/bore/releases), extract `bore.exe`, add its folder to your `PATH`\n\nVerify with `bore --version`. Then `--expose bore` runs:\n\n```bash\nbore local <port> --to bore.pub\n```\n\n### ngrok\n\nHosted tunnel service, free tier available. Site: [ngrok.com](https://ngrok.com).\n\nInstall:\n\n- **macOS:** `brew install ngrok/ngrok/ngrok`\n- **Linux:** see the apt/yum repos at [ngrok.com/download](https://ngrok.com/download) — or download the tarball, extract, and put `ngrok` on your `$PATH`\n- **Windows:** download the zip from [ngrok.com/download](https://ngrok.com/download), extract `ngrok.exe`, add its folder to your `PATH`\n\nOne-time setup — sign up at [ngrok.com](https://ngrok.com), copy your authtoken from the dashboard, then:\n\n```bash\nngrok config add-authtoken <your-token>\n```\n\nVerify with `ngrok --version`. Then `--expose ngrok` runs:\n\n```bash\nngrok http <port>\n```\n\nShell completion (example usage):\n\n```text\neven-terminal complete zsh\neven-terminal complete bash\neven-terminal complete fish\neven-terminal complete powershell\n```\n\nEach form prints the completion script for that shell.\n\n\n## Flow\n\n1. Start the foreground server with `even-terminal`. On first run, finish the setup wizard; the server then prints a connection URL, the persistent token, and a QR code.\n2. Open the Even app on your phone and scan the QR code — or paste the URL and token manually if scanning isn't convenient.\n3. Your G2 glasses and R1 ring connect via BLE through the Even app. The agent's output streams onto the glasses, and ring gestures route back to the agent as keyboard events.\n\n\n## Providers\n\nEven Terminal can run all supported providers concurrently. `--provider <name>`\nselects the default provider; clients may still choose another provider for each\nsession.\n\n| Provider      | Purpose                                      | Status       |\n|---------------|----------------------------------------------|--------------|\n| `claude`      | Claude sessions managed through Agent SDK    | Stable       |\n| `claude-sync` | Shared Claude sessions across CLI and app    | Experimental |\n| `codex`       | Real-time Codex sessions through app-server  | Stable       |\n\nInstall and authenticate the corresponding system CLI before using\n`even-terminal claude` or `even-terminal codex`.\n\n### Claude\n\nSessions started from the Even app normally use the `claude` provider through\nClaude Agent SDK.\n\nTo use the familiar Claude terminal interface while allowing the Even app to\njoin the same session, run:\n\n```bash\neven-terminal claude\neven-terminal claude --resume <session-id>\n```\n\nNormal Claude arguments pass through to the system `claude` CLI. The command\nautomatically discovers a running Even Terminal server and prompts for one when\nmultiple instances are available.\n\n#### Experimental terminal and app synchronization\n\nThe `claude-sync` provider remains experimental. It relies on a compatibility\nlayer around the Claude CLI rather than a native shared-session protocol.\nExpect occasional edge cases around CLI input, session resume, output timing,\npermissions, and compatibility with future Claude CLI releases.\n\nGiven the integration surface Anthropic has chosen to expose, this remains\nabout the best shared-session experience Even Terminal can provide.\n\nClaude Sync runs under the `claude` provider name by default. Start the server:\n\n```bash\neven-terminal\n```\n\nThen open Claude in another terminal:\n\n```bash\neven-terminal claude\n```\n\nTo use the original Claude SDK provider without terminal/app synchronization,\nstart the server with `even-terminal --use-original-claude`. The explicit\n`claude-sync` provider remains available.\n\n#### Selecting a server port\n\nThe Claude wrapper normally discovers the server automatically. To connect it\nto a specific Even Terminal port:\n\n```bash\neven-terminal --port 4567\nenv EVEN_TERMINAL_PORT=4567 even-terminal claude\nenv EVEN_TERMINAL_PORT=4567 even-terminal claude --resume <session-id>\n```\n\nPowerShell:\n\n```powershell\n$env:EVEN_TERMINAL_PORT = \"4567\"\neven-terminal claude --resume <session-id>\n```\n\n#### Claude executable compatibility\n\nAgent SDK sessions use the SDK-bundled Claude executable by default. If that\nversion behaves differently from the system installation, start Even Terminal\nwith:\n\n```bash\neven-terminal --claude-use-system-cli\n```\n\nThis compatibility option may help with version-specific problems, though it\ncannot guarantee identical behavior. `even-terminal claude` always launches\nthe system `claude` CLI.\n\n#### Claude automatic tool approval\n\nEven Terminal's default list appears in `even-terminal --help`:\n\n```text\nRead, Glob, Grep, ToolSearch, WebSearch, WebFetch, TaskOutput, ExitPlanMode,\nListMcpResources, ReadMcpResource, TodoWrite, TaskUpdate\n```\n\n`WebSearch` and `WebFetch` can access the network without an app confirmation.\nTo replace the list, pass comma-separated, case-sensitive tool names; use\n`none` to clear the entries supplied by Even Terminal:\n\n```bash\neven-terminal --claude-allowed-tools Read,Glob,Grep,ToolSearch\neven-terminal --claude-allowed-tools none\n```\n\nEmpty names and `none` mixed with other names are rejected. Unknown names are\naccepted because Claude can load custom tools from user/project MCP settings\nand plugins; fully qualified MCP names normally look like\n`mcp__<server>__<tool>`. Native allow rules in Claude user or project settings\nmay approve additional tools independently of this option.\n\n### Codex\n\nEven Terminal integrates with Codex through its native app-server protocol.\nThe app-server runs locally and starts lazily when a Codex session first needs\nit.\n\n```bash\neven-terminal codex\n```\n\nThis command discovers a running Even Terminal instance and launches the system\nCodex CLI with `codex --remote`, connecting it to the same app-server used by\nthe Even app. Normal Codex arguments pass through to the CLI.\n\nWhen the terminal and app use the same Codex thread, prompts entered from either\nside and streamed responses appear on both sides in real time. Codex provides\nan actual multi-client shared-session protocol, giving Even Terminal a direct\nand considerably more reliable synchronization path. Claude currently offers\nno equivalent interface, hence the experimental compatibility layer described\nabove.\n\nIn practice, Codex synchronization provides the stronger experience by design:\nnative real-time events, direct bidirectional input, and fewer version-sensitive\nedge cases.\n\n#### Selecting the Codex app-server port\n\nThe Codex app-server uses port `8765` by default. To use another port, start the\nserver and Codex CLI with `CODEX_APP_SERVER_PORT`:\n\n```bash\nenv CODEX_APP_SERVER_PORT=8766 even-terminal\nenv CODEX_APP_SERVER_PORT=8766 even-terminal codex\n```\n\nPowerShell:\n\n```powershell\n$env:CODEX_APP_SERVER_PORT = \"8766\"\neven-terminal\neven-terminal codex\n```\n\nThis port belongs to the local Codex app-server. The main Even Terminal HTTP\nport remains controlled by `--port`.\n\n---\n\n## Common problems\n\n| **Symptom**                                               | **Cause**                                               | **Fix**                                                                                  |\n|-----------------------------------------------------------|---------------------------------------------------------|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|\n| Phone app shows \"Server unreachable\"                      | Laptop and phone on different transports                | Match: both on Tailscale (`--tailscale`) or both on the same Wi-Fi                       |\n| `EADDRINUSE :3456`                                        | Another even-terminal already running                   | `lsof -i :3456` → kill old one, or pass `--port <other>`                                 |\n| `command not found: claude` or `codex`                   | Agent binary not on `$PATH`                             | Install per the Providers table;
