It's lightweight and uses 100% Node.js core modules.\n* It implements a [`Readable`][] stream, which is efficient\n  and flexible in terms of being able to `pipe` to other streams or consume via events.\n* Stream backpressure is properly respected, so at no time is data pushed through the\n  stream unless it is requested.\n* It handles log rolling.  Renaming files is handled gracefully without losing lines\n  written to the \"old\" file, no matter what the poll interval is.\n* It handles file truncation, continuing to tail the file despite being truncated.\n\n## Installation\n\n```sh\nnpm install @logdna/tail-file\n```\n\n## Supported Versions of Node.js\nThis package works with the following *supported* versions.  Other versions might work, but the ones listed here are officially tested.\nIf backward-compatibility is lost over time, a `major` version will be released supporting\nthe latest version, and deprecating incompatible versions. Users are then encouraged to try\nprevious versions of this package for those deprecated versions of Node.js.\n\n**Node.js versions**: `18`, `20`\n\n## Usage\n\nInstantiate an instance by passing the full path of a file to tail.\nThis will return a stream that can be piped to other streams or consumed\nvia [`data` events][data]. Therefore, to exit  cleanly,\none must simply await the `quit` call.  If the implementation wishes to keep track of\nthe last position read from the file (for resuming in the same spot later, for example),\nthen a simple listener can be added to always track the file position. Does the file exist?', err)\n    throw err\n  })\n```\n\n## Events\n\n`TailFile` is a [`Readable` stream][`Readable`], so it can emit any events from that\nsuperclass. Additionally, it will emit the following custom events.\n\n### Event: `'flush'`\n\n* [`<Object>`][]\n  * `lastReadPosition` [`<Number>`][] - The current file position at `flush` time\n\nThis event is emitted when the underlying stream is done being read.\nIf backpressure is in effect, then `_read()` may be called multiple\ntimes until it's flushed, so this event signals the end of the process.\nIt is used primarily in shutdown to make sure the data is exhausted,\nbut users may listen for this event if the relative \"read position\" in the\nfile is of interest.  For example, the `lastReadPosition` may be persisted to memory\nor database for resuming `tail-file` on a separate execution without missing\nany lines or duplicating them.\n\n### Event: `'renamed'`\n\n* [`<Object>`][]\n  * `message` [`<String>`][] - Static message:\n    `'The file was renamed or rolled. Tailing resumed from the beginning.'`\n  * `filename` [`<String>`][] - The filename that's being tailed\n  * `when` [`<Date>`][] - The date/time when the event happened\n\nThis event is emitted when a file with the same name is found, but has\na different inode than the previous poll. Commonly, this happens\nduring a log rotation.\n\n### Event: `'retry'`\n\n* [`<Object>`][]\n  * `message` [`<String>`][] - Static message: `'File disappeared. Retrying.'`\n  * `filename` [`<String>`][] - The filename that's being tailed\n  * `attempts` [`<Number>`][] - The number of attempts to try and access the file\n  * `when` [`<Date>`][] - The date/time when the event happened\n\nIf a file that was successfully being tailed goes away, `TailFile` will\ntry for `maxPollFailures` to re-poll the file.  For each of those retries,\nthis event is emitted for informative purposes.  Typically, this could happen\nif log rolling is occurring manually, or timed in a way where the poll happens\nduring the time in which the \"new\" filename is not yet created.\n\n### Event: `'tail_error'`\n\n* [`<Error>`][]\n  * `message` [`<String>`][] - The error message as written by `TailFile`\n  * `code` [`<String>`][] - Static value of `ETAIL`\n  * `meta` [`<Object>`][] - Additional metadata added for context\n    * `actual` [`<Error>`][] - The actual error that was thrown, e.g. from a stream\n\nWhen an error happens that is specific to `TailFile`, it cannot emit an `error` event\nwithout causing the main stream to end (because it's a `Readable` implementation).\nTherefore, if an error happens in a place such as reading the underlying file\nresource, a `tail_error` event will be emitted instead.\n\n### Event: `'truncated'`\n\n* [`<Object>`][]\n  * `message` [`<String>`][] - Static message:\n    `'The file was truncated.  Tailing resumed from the beginning.'`\n  * `filename` [`<String>`][] - The filename that's being tailed\n  * `when` [`<Date>`][] - The date/time when the event happened\n\nIf a file is shortened or truncated without moving or renaming the file,\n`TailFile` will assume it to be a new file, and it will start consuming\nlines from the beginning of the file.  This event is emitted for informational\npurposes about that behavior.\n\n### Event: (Any [`Readable`][] event)\n\n`TailFile` implements a [`Readable`][]\nstream, so it may also emit these events.  The most common ones are `close`\n(when `TailFile` exits), or `data` events from the stream.\n\n## API\n\n### Constructor: `new TailFile(filename[, options])`\n\n* `filename` [`<String>`][] - The filename to tail.\n  Poll errors do not happen until [`start`](#tailstart) is called.\n* `options` [`<Object>`][] - **Optional**\n  * `pollFileIntervalMs` [`<Number>`][] - How often to poll `filename` for changes.\n    **Default:** `1000`ms\n  * `pollFailureRetryMs` [`<Number>`][] - After a polling error (ENOENT?), how long to\n    wait before retrying. **Default:** `200`ms\n  * `maxPollFailures` [`<Number>`][] - The number of times to retry a failed poll\n    before exiting/erroring. **Default:** `10` times.\n  * `readStreamOpts` [`<Object>`][] - Options to pass to the\n    [`fs.createReadStream`][createReadStream] function. This is used for reading bytes\n    that have been added to `filename` between every poll.\n  * `startPos` [`<Number>`][] - An integer representing the inital read position in\n    the file. Useful for reading from `0`. **Default:** `null` (start tailing from EOF)\n  * Any additional key-value options get passed to the [`Readable`][] superclass\n    constructor of `TailFile`\n* Throws: [`<TypeError>`][]|[`<RangeError>`][] if parameter validation fails\n* Returns: `TailFile`, which is a [`Readable`][] stream\n\nInstantiating `TailFile` will return a readable stream, but nothing will happen\nuntil [`start()`](#start) is called.  After that, follow node's standard procedure to\nget the stream into [flowing mode][reading modes].  Typically, this means using\n`pipe` or attaching [`data`][data] listeners to the readable stream.\n\nAs the underlying `filename` is polled for changes, it will call\n`fs.createReadStream` to efficiently read the changed bytes since the last poll.\nTo control the options of that stream, the key-values in `readStreamOpts` will\nbe passed to the `fs.createReadStream` constructor.  Similarly, options for\ncontrolling `TailFile`'s' stream can be passed in via `options`, and they will\nget passed through to the `Readable`'s `super()` constructor.\nUseful settings such as `encoding: 'utf8'` can be used this way.\n\n### `tail.start()`\n\n* Returns: [`<Promise>`][] - Resolves after the file is polled successfully\n* Rejects: If `filename` is not found\n\nCalling `start()` begins the polling of `filename` to watch for added/changed bytes.\n`start()` may be called before or after data is set up to be consumed with a\n`data` listener or a `pipe`.  Standard node stream rules apply, which say\nthat data will not flow through the stream [until it's consumed][reading modes].\n\n### `tail.quit()`\n\n* Returns: [`<Promise>`][] - Resolves after `flush` is called and streams are closed.\n* Emits: [`close`](#event-any-readable-event) when the parent `Readstream` is ended.\n\nThis function calls `flush`, then closes all streams and exits cleanly.  The parent `TailFile` stream will be\nproperly ended by pushing `null`, therefore an `end` event may be emitted as well.\n\n## Program Flow\n\nUsing \"file watcher\" events don't always work across different operating systems,\ntherefore the most effective way to \"tail\" a file is to continuously poll\nit for changes and read those changes when they're detected.\nEven Unix's `tail -f` command works similarly.\n\nOnce `start()` is called, `TailFile` will being this polling process. As changes\nare detected through a `.size` comparison, it uses `fs.openReadStream` to\nefficiently read to the end of the file using [async/await iterators][].\nThis allows backpressure to be supported throughout the process.\n\n## How Log Rolling is Handled\n\n`TailFile` keeps a [`FileHandle`][] open for the `filename`, which is attached to an\ninode.  If log rolling happens, `TailFile` uses the `FileHandle` to read the rest of the\n\"old\" file before starting the process from the beginning of the newly-created file.\nThis ensures that no data is lost due to the rolling/renaming of `filename`.\nThis functionality assumes that `filename` is re-created with the same name,\notherwise an error is emitted if `filename` does not re-appear.\n\n## Backpressure Pauses Polling\n\nBecause `TailFile` won't be consumed until it is in a [reading mode][reading modes],\nthis may cause backpressure to be enacted.  In other words, if `.start()` is called,\nbut `pipe` or [data events][data] are not immediately set up, `TailFile` may encounter\nbackpressure if its [`push()`][push] calls exceed the [high water mark][high water].\nBackpressure can also happen if `TailFile` becomes unpiped.\nIn these cases, `TailFile` will stop polling and wait until data is flowing before\npolling resumes.\n\n### Log Rolling During Backpressure\n\nIf polling is off during backpressure, `TailFile` can handle\n[a single log roll or rename](#how-log-rolling-is-handled) during backpressure, but if\nthe log is renamed more than once, there will most likely be data loss, as polling for\nchanges will be off.\n\nThis is an *extrememly unlikely* edge case, however we recommend consuming the `TailFile`\nstream almost immediately upon creation.\n\n## Contributing\n\nThis project is open-sourced, and accepts PRs from the public for bugs or feature\nenhancements.
