Lines keep the order the file\nhas them in, and rows the file never had are appended, since there is nothing to preserve for them.\nWhen rows cannot be matched to their lines - the file has no usable primary key _and_ the row count\nchanged - the migration fails instead of guessing.\n\nOne list covers every table the migration touches. A table that does not have a named field simply\nhas nothing written back to it, so a directory holding tables that do not all share an `id` works\nwith a single `--fields id`. Check the Result and `throw result.error` (or call `unwrap`) to abort the\ntransaction on such a failure; only a thrown error inside the callback rolls it back.\n\n### Core API\n\nAll operations below return `Result<T, Error>` unless noted otherwise; `getSchema`, `getTableNames`,\nand `getDb` return their value directly since they cannot fail.\n\n**Query Operations:**\n\n- `find(table, where?)` - Find all matching records\n- `findOne(table, where?)` - Find a single record\n- `query(sql, params?)` - Execute raw SQL query\n\n**Modify Operations:**\n\n- `insert(table, data)` - Insert a single record\n- `update(table, data, where)` - Update matching records\n- `delete(table, where)` - Delete matching records\n\n**Batch Operations:**\n\n- `batchInsert(table, data[])` - Insert multiple records\n- `batchUpdate(table, updates[])` - Update multiple records\n- `batchDelete(table, where)` - Delete multiple records\n\n**Transaction & Schema:**\n\n- `transaction(fn)` - Execute operations in a transaction\n- `sync(table?, options?)` - Write changes back to the JSONL file(s)\n- `getSchema(table)` - Get table schema (returns `TableSchema | undefined`, not a `Result`)\n- `getTableNames()` - Get all table names (returns `string[]`, not a `Result`)\n\n**Where Conditions:**\n\n```typescript\n// Simple equality\nunwrap(db.find('users', { age: 30 }));\n\n// Multiple conditions (AND)\nunwrap(db.find('users', { age: 30, name: 'Alice' }));\n\n// Advanced conditions\nunwrap(\n  db.find('users', {\n    age: (age) => age > 25,\n    name: (name) => name.startsWith('A'),\n  }),\n);\n```\n\n### JSON Columns\n\nObjects and arrays are automatically handled as JSON columns:\n\n```typescript\nunwrap(\n  db.insert('orders', {\n    id: 1,\n    items: [{ name: 'Laptop', quantity: 1 }],\n    metadata: { source: 'web' },\n  }),\n);\n\nconst order = unwrap(db.findOne('orders', { id: 1 }));\nconsole.log(order.items[0].name); // \"Laptop\"\n```\n\n### Schema Transformations\n\nWhen your schema transforms data types (e.g., parsing date strings into Date objects), you need to provide a backward transformation to save data back to JSONL files.\n\n**Why?** JSONL files store strings like `\"2024-01-01\"`, but your app works with `Date` objects. You need to convert both ways.\n\n**Example:**\n\n```typescript\nimport * as v from 'valibot';\nimport { defineSchema } from '@toiroakr/lines-db';\n\nconst eventSchema = v.pipe(\n  v.object({\n    id: v.number(),\n    // Transform: string → Date (when reading)\n    date: v.pipe(\n      v.string(),\n      v.isoDate(),\n      v.transform((str) => new Date(str)),\n    ),\n  }),\n);\n\n// Provide backward transformation: Date → string (when writing)\nexport const schema = defineSchema(eventSchema, (output) => ({\n  ...output,\n  date: output.date.toISOString(), // Convert Date back to string\n}));\n```\n\n**In your JSONL file (events.jsonl):**\n\n```jsonl\n{\n  \"id\": 1,\n  \"date\": \"2024-01-01T00:00:00.000Z\"\n}\n```\n\n**In your TypeScript code:**\n\n```typescript\nconst event = unwrap(db.findOne('events', { id: 1 }));\nconsole.log(event.date instanceof Date); // true\nconsole.log(event.date.getFullYear()); // 2024\n```\n\n### Transactions\n\nOperations outside transactions are auto-synced:\n\n```typescript\nunwrap(db.insert('users', { id: 10, name: 'Alice', age: 30 }));\n// ↑ Automatically synced to users.jsonl\n```\n\nA sync keeps the order the file lists its rows in and appends rows the file did not have, so the\ndiff stays limited to what actually changed.\n\nBatch operations with transactions:\n\n```typescript\nunwrap(\n  await db.transaction(async (tx) => {\n    unwrap(tx.insert('users', { id: 10, name: 'Alice', age: 30 }));\n    unwrap(tx.update('users', { age: 31 }, { id: 1 }));\n    // All changes synced atomically on commit\n  }),\n);\n```\n\n`unwrap()` inside the callback turns a failed `tx.insert()`/`tx.update()` into a thrown error, which\n`transaction()` catches and rolls back on - see [Error Handling](#error-handling).\n\n### Writing Back Only Some Fields\n\nA sync writes each row back in full by default, which materializes values a validation schema\ncomputed and fields the JSONL file omitted. Name the fields to write back to keep the rest of every\nline exactly as the file had it:\n\n```typescript\n// users.jsonl: {\"name\":\"Alice\"}\nunwrap(await db.sync('users', { fields: ['id'] }));\n// users.jsonl: {\"id\":\"...\",\"name\":\"Alice\"}\n```\n\nUse `writeBackFields` on the config to apply the same rule to every sync, including the automatic\nsync after an insert, update, or transaction:\n\n```typescript\nconst db = LinesDB.create({ dataDir: './data', writeBackFields: ['id'] });\n```\n\nRows are matched to their existing line by primary key, or by position when the file does not carry\none yet (the case when the primary key itself is being backfilled). Lines keep the order the file\nhas them in, and rows the file never had are appended. A field you name is always taken from the\ndatabase - including when it is `null` there - and `sync` returns an error Result when rows cannot\nbe matched to their lines, rather than guessing.\n\nA field a line did not have is inserted where the schema declares it rather than appended, so a\nbackfilled `id` lands at the front of the line the way a hand-written row has it. Keys the schema\ndoes not declare stay behind the declared ones, and no key a line already had moves.\n\nThe order is read off the rows the schema computes, since that is where a schema states it: a field\nit fills in first is ranked first. A field only some rows carry is ranked after the ones already seen,\nand `mergeFields` takes a `keyOrder` for stating the order outright.\n\n`sync('users', { fields })` names one table, so a field that table does not have is rejected. A sync\ncovering every table - `sync()` or the config option - leaves such a field out of the tables without\nit instead, so one list can serve a directory of tables that do not all share it.\n\n### Editing a Line Yourself\n\n`mergeFields` is the write-back merge on its own, without a database: give it a line and the row a\nschema computed from it, and it hands back the line with the named fields written into it. Reach for it\nwhen the values come from somewhere other than a query - a hook that fills in ids, say - and loading the\nfile into SQLite would only get in the way:\n\n```typescript\nimport { JsonlReader, JsonlWriter, mergeFields, unwrap } from '@toiroakr/lines-db';\n\nconst rows = unwrap(await JsonlReader.read('./data/users.jsonl'));\nconst filled = rows.map((row) => mergeFields(row, fillIds(row), { fields: ['id'] }));\nawait JsonlWriter.write('./data/users.jsonl', filled);\n\n// {\"name\":\"Alice\"}  ->  {\"id\":\"018f...\",\"name\":\"Alice\"}\n```\n\nNothing else in the line is read or checked, so a field in a format a schema would reject cannot keep\nthe named ones from being written.
