If a job has secrets available,\nany action used in that job can read the environment and exfiltrate those\nsecrets. Skipped entries are\nlisted in the output. To include them in update checks, pass\n`--include-branches`.\n\n### Tag Families\n\nSome repositories publish several independent tag families at once — npm\nreleases under `v1.2.3` and an action under `actions-v1.2.3`, for example. A\ncandidate from the wrong family resolves to a real commit but to the wrong\nartifact, so a reference from a named family is resolved from that family's own\ntags rather than from the repository's latest release.\n\nThis works for every update style: `actions-v1.2.3` updates to `actions-v1.3.0`,\nand a SHA pin is matched by family through the `# actions-v1.2.3` comment\nwritten next to it. When the family cannot be resolved — it has no other\nmembers, or the repository answers with an unrelated family — the reference is\nlisted in the output instead of being rewritten.\n\n### Runner Images\n\nActions Up updates `runs-on` labels, such as `ubuntu-22.04` → `ubuntu-24.04`, to\nthe newest stable GitHub-hosted image in its bundled catalog. Upgrade Actions Up\nto receive new images.\n\nOnly known, versioned `ubuntu-*`, `macos-*` and `windows-*` labels without\nsuffixes are supported. The key and string value must share a line; quotes and\ncomments are preserved.\n\nArrays, runner groups, self-hosted/custom labels, `*-latest`, expressions,\nmatrix values, YAML anchors and flow mappings are skipped. Retired and unknown\nimages are ignored; preview images are never update targets.\n\nRunner updates appear as `runner/` in the interactive list. Use\n`--exclude '^runner/'` or `# actions-up-ignore` to skip them.\n\n### Quiet Mode\n\nUse `--quiet` (`-q`) to hide the skipped and blocked-update warnings (for\nexample, actions intentionally pinned to branches). Other output — results,\napplied updates, and errors — is unchanged.\n\n```bash\nnpx actions-up --yes --quiet\n```\n\n### Update Mode\n\nBy default, Actions Up allows major updates. Use `--mode` to limit updates:\n\n```bash\nnpx actions-up --mode minor\nnpx actions-up --mode patch\n```\n\nIn `minor` and `patch` modes, Actions Up tries to find the newest compatible tag\nfirst (for example, from `@v4` in `minor` mode it will choose the latest\n`v4.x.y`). A SHA-pinned action continues updating to the latest\nresolved SHA.\n\nActions Up only writes tags that actually exist in the action repository.\nFloating tag conventions differ between publishers, so when the preferred\ngranularity is not published, the closest existing tag is used instead:\n\n- `astral-sh/setup-uv@v7` updates to `astral-sh/setup-uv@v8.3.2`, because the\n publisher does not maintain a floating `v8` tag\n- A broader floating tag is preferred when it points at the latest release, so a\n `v6.1`-style reference may resolve to `v6` when `v6.2` does not exist\n\nKeep in mind that a broader floating tag moves with future releases, so it may\ncross minor version boundaries over time even when the update was selected with\n`--mode patch`.\n\nUse `--style semver` to rewrite tag references to the conventional floating tag\nfor the selected `--mode`, regardless of the granularity used in the workflow:\n\n```bash\nnpx actions-up --style semver\nnpx actions-up --style semver --mode patch\n```\n\nWith `--mode major` or `--mode minor` the preferred form is `v`, and with\n`--mode patch` it is `v.`. The same existence rules apply: when\nthe publisher does not provide the preferred floating tag, the closest existing\ntag is used, falling back to the exact version. SHA-pinned references keep\nupdating to the latest resolved SHA and are never converted to tags.\n\n### Prefer Tags\n\nSome repositories stop publishing GitHub Releases but keep tagging new versions\n(for example, `bridgecrewio/checkov-action`, whose latest release dates back to\n2022 while tags stay current). By default, Actions Up trusts the latest release,\nso such actions resolve to an outdated version.\n\nUse `--prefer-tags` to also inspect repository tags when a release exists and\ntake whichever version is higher:\n\n```bash\nnpx actions-up --prefer-tags\n```\n\nThe comparison covers the first 100 tags returned by the GitHub API and costs\none extra API request per action, plus a few more when a tag wins the\ncomparison.\n\nEven without this flag, SHA-pinned actions whose inline version comment is\nhigher than the resolved latest version are never downgraded: such updates are\nskipped with a warning suggesting `--prefer-tags`.\n\n## GitHub Actions Integration\n\n### Automated PR Checks\n\nYou can integrate Actions Up into your CI/CD pipeline to automatically check for\noutdated actions on every pull request.
