See the [Command Guide](https://ai-blueprint.dev/docs/command-guide/)\nfor the full reference.\n\n## Updating an existing installation\n\nPreview the update plan:\n\n```bash\n# npm\nnpx create-ai-blueprint@latest update --dry-run\n\n# pnpm\npnpm dlx create-ai-blueprint@latest update --dry-run\n```\n\nApply the update:\n\n```bash\n# npm\nnpx create-ai-blueprint@latest update\n\n# pnpm\npnpm dlx create-ai-blueprint@latest update\n```\n\nThe updater detects the installed adapters and manages only these paths:\n\n- `.agents/skills/`\n- `.claude/skills/`\n\nIt preserves `AGENTS.md`, `CLAUDE.md`, project configuration, project and build\nplans, context, history, references, and prototypes. An unchanged `blueprint/README.md` installed by an\nolder version is removed during update; a locally modified copy keeps the normal\nconflict protection. The `blueprint/.state/manifest.json` file records the\ninstalled version and hashes of managed files.\n\nUpdate can also change the installed adapters. In an interactive terminal it\nshows the adapter checkbox pre-filled with the installed adapters, so you can\ncheck or uncheck tools before the plan is printed. `update --dry-run --yes`\npreviews the plan without the adapter prompt. Adapter flags such as\n`update --codex` add adapters without a prompt and never remove an adapter.\nRemoving an adapter is interactive only; its managed skill files follow the\nnormal conflict and backup rules, and empty skill directories are pruned.\nOpenCode shares its skill tree, so adding or removing Claude Code can move it\nbetween `.agents/skills/` and `.claude/skills/`, and the plan says so. Adding\nClaude Code creates `CLAUDE.md` from the template only when the file is\nmissing, and removing Claude Code never deletes it.\n\n`blueprint/config.json` is user-owned project policy. It controls review cadence,\ncheckpoint availability, branch prefixes, verification strictness, independent-review execution, regular and\nContinuous quality gates, and Continuous Mode limits. Audit, independent-review,\ncheck, and try-guide gates use built-in defaults. Independent review defaults to\n`when-sensitive` for regular and Continuous work, while audit, check, and try\nguide default to `manual`. Sensitive or unusually broad work is selected for\nindependent review, while ordinary small features are not. Setting a workflow's\nindependent review policy to `manual` disables automatic selection; an explicit\n`/audit independent current` still uses the configured execution method. A\nmissing file uses built-in defaults; an invalid file is reported by status and\nblocks mutating workflow skills until `/doctor` identifies the repair.\nConfiguration never grants permission to\ncommit, merge, push, deploy, publish, or take destructive action. Only an\nexplicit `/continuous` or `$continuous` request starts the multi-feature loop.\n\n`review.independentExecution` defaults to `automatic`, which uses a fresh\nisolated reviewer child when a selected independent-review gate runs\nand the active adapter can expose its exact reviewer identity and model. When it\ncannot, Blueprint preserves the request and stops with the manual fresh-session\nhandoff. Set it to `manual` to always use that handoff. The setting changes\nexecution only; `qualityGates` still decides when independent review is selected.\nThe automatic reviewer is a generic child of the current runtime and reads the\ninstalled project's Audit skill and review contract. Blueprint does not require\nor discover a global agent role, skill, prompt, or TraversyFlow component.\nNew requests record requested execution and completed receipts record actual\nexecution. Automatic-to-manual fallback is explicit, and legacy receipts remain\ncompatible only as fresh-session manual reviews.\n\n## Context efficiency\n\nNew installations make Claude Code import only `AGENTS.md` at startup. Explicit\nworkflow skills load the compact overview, active spec, coding standards, and\ninteraction guide on demand. Feature uses targeted repository reads and writes\none reviewed spec. Implement reuses that spec and normally runs the full Verify\ncommand once after all steps. New project configuration also defaults to one\nfeature-level review packet with step checkpoint commits disabled.\n\nThe updater preserves `CLAUDE.md` and `blueprint/config.json`, so existing\nprojects do not receive those user-owned changes automatically. Run `/doctor` to\nidentify an oversized overview. The updater directly reports the obsolete\n`project-overview.md` and `current-feature.md` import lines when they are present\nin `CLAUDE.md`. Older layouts may also contain direct `coding-standards.md` and\n`ai-interaction.md` imports, which the updater reports too. Remove every reported\nline, restart Claude Code in the project, rerun `/overview` when needed, and\nchoose the lower-context defaults in `blueprint/config.json` if they fit the\nproject:\n\n```json\n\"workflow\": {\n  \"stepReview\": \"feature\",\n  \"checkpointCommits\": \"disabled\"\n}\n```\n\nThese settings are separate. `stepReview: \"every\"` restores the approval pause\nafter each implementation step, but it does not enable checkpoint commit prompts.\nTo match the previous workflow exactly, use:\n\n```json\n\"workflow\": {\n  \"stepReview\": \"every\",\n  \"checkpointCommits\": \"enabled\"\n}\n```\n\nContext savings from the compact overview, on-demand project context, and\nshorter skill descriptions still apply. Feature may pause when a missing choice\nwould define public behavior, security, persisted data, or interoperability. It\ndoes not pause for reversible internal details with no current compatibility\nsurface.\n\nOnboarding offers **Efficient**, **Guided**, and **Custom** implementation styles.\nThey write only the existing `stepReview` and `checkpointCommits` values, so no\nadditional mode is stored. You can edit either value later; the next Implement\nrun uses the current configuration.\n\nUse `/context all` in Claude Code to inspect the live result. See the\n[controlled benchmark](https://github.com/aiblueprinthq/ai-blueprint/blob/main/benchmarks/context-efficiency.md)\nfor the two charts, exact results, method, and limits.\n\nLocally modified managed files are reported as conflicts. Interactive updates\nask before replacing them. Non-interactive updates exit unless you pass\n`--force`, which backs up the conflicting files before replacement. Backups are\nstored under `blueprint/.state/backups/` and ignored by git.\n\nThe first update of a legacy install creates the manifest. Files that already\nmatch the current package are adopted automatically. Differing files remain\nconflicts so local changes are not lost.\n\n### If latest runs an older version\n\nCheck the version printed in the update plan before proceeding. A cached\npackage resolution can run an older release even when the command uses\n`@latest`. Pin the intended published version explicitly. For example, for\n1.10.0:\n\n```bash\n# npm\nnpx create-ai-blueprint@1.10.0 update\n\n# pnpm\npnpm dlx create-ai-blueprint@1.10.0 update\n```\n\nUse the version from the [release list](https://github.com/aiblueprinthq/ai-blueprint/releases)\nwhen following this example after a newer release. The interactive adapter\npicker was introduced in 1.8.0. Run without adapter flags or `--yes` in an\ninteractive terminal to select adapters. If an older updater offers to replace\na newer global CLI with an older version, answer **No** and rerun the intended\nversion.\n\n## Checking project status\n\nRun the read-only status command from a Blueprint project or any directory\ninside it:\n\n```bash\nnpx create-ai-blueprint@latest status\n```\n\nIt reports configuration state, recorded command activity, build-plan progress,\nactive work, findings, independent-review state, Git state, drift warnings,\ncompletion blockers, and one\nsuggested next action. Onboarding uses a dedicated setup marker, overview\nfreshness uses a fingerprint of both plans that ignores checkbox completion\nmarkers while still detecting plan content changes. A verified active-work\nstatus makes the completion gate ready, while no active work reports the gate as\nidle. Running command activity overrides\ncontradictory next-action advice, and an activity record that stops updating is\nshown as interrupted instead of running forever. Malformed generated activity\npoints to `/doctor`, which can offer to reset only `blueprint/.state/run.json`\nafter approval. For scripts and integrations, request the versioned JSON object:\n\n```bash\nnpx create-ai-blueprint@latest status --json\n```\n\nTracked workflow skills use the packaged dashboard activity helper instead of\nconstructing `run.json` directly. The helper validates every field before an\natomic replacement. Invalid updates fail without replacing the previous valid\nstate, and the next tracked command safely replaces malformed legacy state.\n\nAfter an interactive Blueprint install or update, the installer checks the\nglobal CLI version. It offers to run the following command only when the CLI is\nmissing or does not match the npx package version:\n\n```bash\nnpm install --global create-ai-blueprint@latest\n```\n\nThe prompt defaults to no and is skipped for matching versions, non-interactive\nruns, `--yes` runs, and runs from a source checkout of this repository.\nAccepting it installs or refreshes the CLI at the same version used by the npx\ncommand. Global installation exposes the shorter forms `blueprint status`,\n`blueprint status --json`, and `blueprint dashboard`. Use `--target ./my-app` to\ninspect an explicit project directory. Status never edits project or Git state.\n\n### Command migration\n\nTwo standalone skills have been removed:\n\n| Old command | Replacement |\n| --- | --- |\n| `/browser-tests` | `/tests browser` (Codex: `$tests browser`) |\n| `/try` | `/check guide` (Codex: `$check guide`) |\n\nRun the CLI update to install the consolidated skills. Updates remove unchanged\nmanaged copies of the retired skills and report customized copies as conflicts,\npreserving them until you resolve or explicitly replace them. Review old references in your preserved `AGENTS.md`; updates do not replace your\nproject instructions. The `qualityGates.regular.tryGuide` and\n`qualityGates.continuous.tryGuide` keys keep their names and policies and now\nselect `/check guide`. No configuration migration is needed.\n\n## Opening the local dashboard\n\nRun the on-demand read-only dashboard from a Blueprint project or any directory\ninside it:\n\n```bash\nblueprint dashboard\n```\n\nThe command binds to `127.0.0.1` on an available port, opens the dashboard in\nyour browser, and refreshes immediately when project or Blueprint files change,\nwith a ten-second fallback check. It does\nnot edit project files, run workflow commands, start the application, or make\nthe dashboard available outside the local machine. It leads with the suggested\nnext action, then shows recorded command activity, active work and build steps,\nthe build-plan roadmap, project and Git state, findings, completion blockers,\nand archived work. Autopilot and Continuous runs include their mode, progress,\nconfigured gates, local boundary, and safe resume command when one is available.\nPress Ctrl+C to stop it. Use `blueprint dashboard --no-open` when you want the\nURL without opening a browser. The older `blueprint ui` form remains as a\ndeprecated alias.\n\nThe optional global `blueprint` command is limited to read-only project status\nand this local dashboard.
