many members.\n\n`extract-cbd-shape` is a TypeScript package for RDF-based Web APIs where a response contains a collection page, stream fragment, or batch of records, and a client needs to process one member at a time. Given a focus node, it returns the quads that describe that member.\n\nThe package combines two fallback strategies described in the member extraction paper:\n\n- a dataset-aware Concise Bounded Description (CBD) extraction rule;\n- optional SHACL-guided extraction, where shapes act as extraction hints.\n\nIt works with RDF/JS stores and terms, preserves named graphs, supports blank-node closure, and can extract many members from the same page efficiently.\n\n## Install\n\n```bash\nnpm install extract-cbd-shape\n```\n\nThe package is ESM-first and includes TypeScript declarations.\n\n## Quick Start\n\n```ts\nimport {\n  CBDShapeExtractor,\n  createGraphIndexedRdfStore,\n} from \"extract-cbd-shape\";\nimport { DataFactory } from \"rdf-data-factory\";\n\nconst dataStore = createGraphIndexedRdfStore();\n\n// Add RDF/JS quads from your parser of choice.\nfor (const quad of dataQuads) {\n  dataStore.addQuad(quad);\n}\n\nconst extractor = new CBDShapeExtractor();\nconst memberQuads = await extractor.extract(\n  dataStore,\n  DataFactory.namedNode(\"https://example.org/member/42\"),\n);\n```\n\nWith a SHACL shape:\n\n```ts\nconst shapeStore = createGraphIndexedRdfStore();\n\nfor (const quad of shapeQuads) {\n  shapeStore.addQuad(quad);\n}\n\nconst extractor = new CBDShapeExtractor(shapeStore);\nconst memberQuads = await extractor.extract(\n  dataStore,\n  DataFactory.namedNode(\"https://example.org/member/42\"),\n  DataFactory.namedNode(\"https://example.org/MemberShape\"),\n);\n```\n\n## What It Extracts\n\nWithout a shape, extraction is based on a dataset-aware CBD rule:\n\n1. include quads where the focus node is the subject;\n2. recursively include quads for blank node objects;\n3. include quads in the named graph whose graph name is the focus node, for every\n   focus node reached, so a blank node used as a graph name is followed as well;\n4. keep RDF dataset graph names on the extracted quads.\n\nEvery blank node is processed at most once per extraction, so cycles and blank\nnodes that are both an object and a graph name terminate.\n\nWith a SHACL shape, the shape is interpreted as an extraction topology:\n\n1. `sh:property` paths are used as paths to include;\n2. `sh:minCount > 0` marks paths as required;\n3. `sh:node` links recursively extract related nodes with another node shape;\n4. `sh:closed true` restricts extraction to shape-selected paths;\n5. open shapes keep the normal CBD result and add shape-guided paths.\n\nThis is not SHACL validation. The shape is used to decide which quads to extract. Validate the extracted quads separately if validation matters for your application.\n\n## API\n\n### `new CBDShapeExtractor(shapesGraphStore?, dereferencer?, options?)`\n\nCreates an extractor.\n\n- `shapesGraphStore`: optional RDF/JS store containing SHACL shapes.\n- `dereferencer`: optional `rdf-dereference` compatible dereferencer.\n- `options.fetch`: optional `fetch` implementation used by dereferencing.\n- `options.cbdDefaultGraph`: controls default-graph CBD behavior.\n- `options.bulkConcurrency`: concurrency for `bulkExtract()` with asynchronous stores.\n\n### `extract(store, id, shapeId?, graphsToIgnore?)`\n\nExtracts one member.\n\n```ts\nconst quads = await extractor.extract(store, id, shapeId);\n```\n\n- `store`: RDF/JS store containing the current page or dataset.\n- `id`: RDF/JS term for the member to extract.\n- `shapeId`: optional RDF/JS term identifying the SHACL node shape.\n- `graphsToIgnore`: optional list of named graphs to exclude during traversal.\n- returns: `Promise<Quad[]>`.\n\nIf no local quads can satisfy required shape paths, the extractor may dereference the focus IRI and retry with the retrieved data.\n\n### `bulkExtract(store, ids, shapeId?, graphsToIgnore?, itemExtracted?)`\n\nExtracts several members from the same store.\n\n```ts\nconst members = await extractor.bulkExtract(\n  dataStore,\n  memberIds,\n  DataFactory.namedNode(\"https://example.org/MemberShape\"),\n);\n```\n\nUse this when a page contains many members. It avoids repeatedly copying the page, keeps member named graphs isolated from each other, and can process asynchronous stores with bounded concurrency.\n\nThe result keeps the input order:\n\n```ts\nArray<{\n  subject: Term;\n  quads: Quad[];\n}>\n```\n\n### `createGraphIndexedRdfStore()`\n\nCreates an in-memory `rdf-stores` store with indexes tuned for member extraction.\n\n```ts\nconst store = createGraphIndexedRdfStore();\n```\n\nThe store includes graph-first indexes for retrieving member named graphs and traversal indexes for CBD and SHACL path lookups across graphs. Prefer it for browser use, tests, and page-scale in-memory extraction.\n\n### `path` and `shape`\n\nThe package also exports internal path and shape helpers under:\n\n```ts\nimport { path, shape } from \"extract-cbd-shape\";\n```\n\nMost consumers only need `CBDShapeExtractor` and `createGraphIndexedRdfStore()`.\n\n## SHACL Support\n\nThe extractor uses a focused subset of SHACL Core:\n\n- `sh:NodeShape`\n- `sh:property`\n- `sh:path`\n- `sh:minCount`\n- `sh:node`\n- `sh:closed`\n- `sh:and`\n- `sh:or`\n- `sh:xone`\n- SHACL property paths, including sequence, inverse, alternative, zero-or-more, one-or-more, and zero-or-one paths.\n\nIt does not implement full SHACL validation semantics. In particular, it does not use `sh:targetClass` for automatic target selection and does not enforce constraints such as `sh:class`, `sh:pattern`, language constraints, qualified value shapes, SPARQL constraints, or JavaScript constraints.\n\n## Named Graphs\n\nNamed graphs are handled conservatively:\n\n- quads in a graph named after a focus node are included, whether that name is an IRI or a blank node;\n- `bulkExtract()` avoids leaking one member's named graph into another member;\n- other graph names are preserved, but not treated as member boundaries unless they match the extraction rule.\n\nThis makes the package useful for collection pages where each member may be represented either by subject-centric quads, by a named graph, or by a combination of both.\n\n## Browser Playground\n\nThe repository includes a browser playground in `perf/web`.
