\n\n\n## Why GMD\n\n- **Codebase Mapper** (v1.7–v1.8.8) — point GMD at a repo (or several, local or remote) that's too big to read and it produces a current, structural *map*: files, functions, classes, and individual methods across **eight languages** (Java, C#, Go, Python, Rust, TypeScript, C++, and C), plus dependency edges between files. For every language except Rust it goes deeper, resolving which exact method calls which exact method. Deterministic and reproducible — and **agent-searchable**, so an agent pulls the right slice of the map (and the rules governing it) into context on demand. [Details below.](#codebase-mapper)\n- **Obsidian knowledge vault** (v1.3–v1.6, optional) — sync your planning and knowledge into an Obsidian vault as a typed-edge knowledge graph: atomic notes, reading \"trails\", automatic clustering, a curator/lint loop, and bi-temporal history. Parallel mode keeps each milestone in its own isolated `.planning/milestones//` subtree.\n- **One-command installer** — `npx get-magic-done-cc@latest` deploys commands, agents, hooks, skills, and runtime into `~/.claude/`.\n- **Update manager** — SessionStart version check plus `/gmd:update` keeps installs current with a single command.\n\n## Model Routing\n\nEvery subagent spawn picks its model from a 9-cell table indexed by **task complexity** × **profile**. The map lists files, functions, classes, and individual methods, plus dependency edges between files.\n- **Method-level call graphs for nearly every language** — for Java, C#, Go, Python, TypeScript, and C++/C the mapper goes deeper: a project-wide symbol table resolves which exact method calls which exact method. Each call is tagged honestly by how it was determined — exact, file-level, or best-guess — and the mapper never fabricates an answer it can't determine. (Rust and Bash stay at structural breadth and emit no call edges.)\n- **Multiple repos at once** (v1.8.3) — drop a `gmd-workspace.json` manifest at the root listing the repos that make up a system, and the mapper walks all of them under one shared symbol table, so a call that crosses from one repo into another still resolves. Without the manifest it's an ordinary single-repo walk, with byte-identical output.\n- **Remote repositories** (v1.8.5) — a workspace member can point at a remote GitHub repo. The mapper materializes it, pinned to an exact commit, into an immutable per-project cache and maps it just like a local checkout. It authenticates with a GitHub token, so private repos behind a company VPN work.\n- **An agent-searchable bridge** (v1.8.4) — the map is no longer write-only. A separate, deterministic index sits beside it that agents query on demand — \"who calls this function\", \"what does this method call\", \"where does this symbol live\" — pulling just the relevant slice into context only when a task needs it, rather than on every session. In our own measurements, turning the bridge on found the relevant code far more often than leaving it off.\n- **Semantic rules at the point of editing** (v1.8.8) — the human-facing notes the mapper writes per component (\"never call X before Y\", \"this must stay byte-deterministic\") ride the same retrieval path, so an agent about to change a file sees the rules that govern it *before* it edits — surfaced inside the existing context budget, never crowding out the structural detail.\n- **Deterministic output** — the generated map is byte-for-byte reproducible from the same source.\n- **Drift warning** — a pre-commit hook warns when the committed map has fallen out of date with the code, and (since v1.8.6) skips the re-walk entirely for commits that touch no mapped source.\n\nThe mapper grew across several milestones: v1.7 laid the foundation (a structural pass plus a semantic pass, a \"C4\"-style output schema, code-flavored typed edges, `file:line`-grounded provenance, a graph reviewer, and auto-generated code \"trails\"); v1.8 made it multi-language and tiered; and v1.8.3–v1.8.8 added multi-repo and remote mapping, the agent-searchable read surface, and on-demand retrieval of the map's semantic rules. Adding a language remains a one-entry-plus-one-module operation.\n\nA companion command, `/gmd:map-review`, runs an on-demand integrity review over the generated map (dangling links, stale `file:line` pointers, claim/evidence mismatches) without re-running the full mapper. This is deliberate — in a single-\nuser repo, the global default cannot be the source of corpus growth\n(per critic R2 in [`.planning/milestones/v1.5.5-SPEC.md`](.planning/milestones/v1.5.5-SPEC.md)\nD6). The corpus grows only when the lead opts in. This is\nthe intended design (per critic R2: in a single-user repo, the global\ndefault cannot be the source of corpus growth), not a bug.\n\n**PII redaction (D8):** the dispatcher reuses TELM-06's\n`[A-Za-z0-9_-]{20,}` high-entropy regex on 4 named fields\n(`decision_point`, `lead_recommendation`, `critic_alternative`, `notes`)\nbefore NDJSON serialization. Per-component gates default OFF (manual-flip-\nonly critic-gate pattern); the static routing matrix at\n`.planning/cross-model.json` controls which task types route where. This means flipping a\ngate mid-phase has no effect on the current phase — the flip takes effect at\nthe next phase entry. The `/gmd:set-cross-model` setter surfaces this in its\nhelp text (SETTER-04 Pitfall 11 UX mitigation).\n\n### Matrix Syntax\n\nThe static matrix lives at `.planning/cross-model.json`. Setter capability-\n probes the requested `vendor:model-id` at edit time (SETTER-03; ≤5s probe\n envelope via `bin/lib/probe-cli.js::existsOnDisk` + `launchProbe`).\n Unknown variant warns; `--force` override permitted for future-model\n preregistration.\n5. **Gate flip path.** Setter writes atomically. If you see `routed_to ≠ executed_by` with `fallback_reason:\nnull`, that's an audit bug — file an issue with the failing SUMMARY.md\nattached.\n\n**Phase-end gap report.** `VERIFICATION.md` \"Cross-Model Coverage\" section\naggregates fallback rates by reason per AUDIT-03 (surfaced even when 0\nfallbacks — proves the audit ran, not skipped). Sync via `node bin/gmd-tools.cjs vault-sync --all` (gated by `components.obsidian.enabled` in `~/.claude/get-magic-done/config.json`).\n\n**Backfill is implicit.** `vault-sync --all` walks both active milestone planning content (`.planning/{phases,milestones,*.md}`) and archived milestones (`.planning/milestones/v*-phases/`) in a single pass.
