If you think there are better defaults for messages or other codes then do let us know via [issue](https://github.com/dwyl/hapi-error/issues).\n\nAny of the above can be overwritten and new status codes can be added.\n\n#### `message` Parse/replace the error message\n\nThis parameter can be of the form `function(message, request)` or just simply a `'string'` to replace the message.\n\nAn example of a use case would be handling errors form joi validation.\n\nOr erroring in different languages.\n```js\nconst config = {\n statusCodes: {\n \"401\": {\n \"message\": function(msg, req) {\n var lang = findLang(req);\n\n return translate(lang, message);\n }\n }\n }\n};\n```\n\nOr providing nice error messages like in the default config above.\n\n#### `redirect` *Redirecting* to another endpoint\n\nSometimes you don't _want_ to show an error page;\n_instead_ you want to re-direct to another page.\nFor example, when your route/page requires the person\nto be authenticated (_logged in_), but they have\nnot supplied a valid session/token to view the route/page.\n\nIn this situation the default Hapi behaviour is to return a `401` (_unauthorized_) error,\nhowever this is not very _useful_ to the _person_ using your application.\n\nRedirecting to a specific url is _easy_ with `hapi-error`:\n\n```js\nconst config = {\n statusCodes: {\n \"401\": { // if the statusCode is 401\n \"redirect\": \"/login\" // redirect to /login page/endpoint\n },\n \"403\": { // if the statusCode is 403\n \"redirect\": function (request) {\n return \"/login?redirect=\" + request.url.pathname\n }\n }\n }\n}\n(async () => {\n await server.register({\n plugin: require('hapi-error'),\n options: config // pass in your redirect configuration in options\n });\n await server.register(require('vision'));\n})();\n```\n\nThis in both cases will `redirect` the client/browser to the `/login` endpoint\nand will append a query parameter with the url the person was _trying_ to visit.\nWith the use of function instead of simple string you can further manipulate the resulted url.\nShould the parameter be a function and return false it will be ignored.\n\ne.g: GET /admin --> 401 unauthorized --> redirect to /login?redirect=/admin\n\n> Redirect Example: [/redirect_server_example.js](https://github.com/dwyl/hapi-error/blob/master/test/redirect_server_example.js)\n\n\n## *That's it*!\n\n*Want more...?* [*ask*!](https://github.com/dwyl/hapi-error/issues)\n\n## *Custom* Error Messages using `request.handleError`\n\nWhen you `register` the `hapi-error` plugin a _useful_ `handleError` method\nbecomes available in every request handler which allows you to (_safely_)\n\"handle\" any \"*thrown*\" errors using just one line of code.\n\nConsider the following Hapi route handler code that is fetching data from a generic Database:\n\n```js\nfunction handler (request, reply) {\n db.get('yourkey', function (err, data) {\n if (err) {\n return reply('error_template', { msg: 'A database error occurred'});\n } else {\n return reply('amazing_app_view', {data: data});\n }\n });\n}\n```\nThis can be re-written (*simplified*) using `request.handleError` method:\n\n```js\nfunction handler (request, reply) {\n db.get('yourkey', function (err, data) { // much simpler, right?\n request.handleError(err, 'A database error occurred');\n return reply('amazing_app_view', {data: data});\n }); // this has *exactly* the same effect in much less code.\n}\n```\nOutput:\n\n\n\n#### Explanation:\n\nUnder the hood, `request.handleError` is using `Hoek.assert` which\nwill `assert` that there is ***no error*** e.g:\n\n`Hoek.assert(!err, 'A database error occurred');`\n\nWhich means that if there *is* an error, it will be \"*thrown*\"\nwith the message you define in the *second argument*.\n\n
\n\n### `handleError` _everywhere_\n\n> Need to call `handleError` _outside_ of the context of the `request` ?\n\nSometimes we create handlers that perform a task _outside_ of the context of\na route/handler (_e.g accessing a database or API_) in this context\nwe still want to use `handleError` to simplify error handling.\n\nThis is easy with `hapi-error`, here's an example:\n\n```js\nvar handleError = require('hapi-error').handleError;\n\ndb.get(key, function (error, result) {\n handleError(error, 'Error retrieving ' + key + ' from DB :-( ');\n return callback(err, result);\n});\n```\nor in a file operation (_uploading a file to AWS S3_):\n\n```js\nvar handleError = require('hapi-error').handleError;\n\ns3Bucket.upload(params, function (err, data) {\n handleError(error, 'Error retrieving ' + key + ' from DB :-( ');\n return callback(err, result);\n}\n```\n\nProvided the `handleError` is called from a function/helper\nthat is being _run_ by a Hapi server any errors will be _intercepted_\nand _logged_ and displayed (_nicely_) to people using your app.\n\n### _custom_ data in error pages\n\n> Want/need to pass some more/custom data to display in your `error_template` view?\n\nAll you have to do is pass an object to `request.handleError` with an\nerrorMessage property and any other template properties you want!\n\nFor example: \n```js\nrequest.handleError(!error, {errorMessage: 'Oops - there has been an error',\nemail: 'example@mail.co', color:'blue'});\n```\nYou will then be able to use {{email}} and {{color}} in your `error_template.html`\n\n### logging\n\nAs with _all_ hapi apps/APIs the recommended approach to logging\nis to use [`good`](https://github.com/dwyl/learn-hapi#logging-with-good)\n\n`hapi-error` logs all errors using `server.log` (_the standard way of logging in Hapi apps_) so once you enable `good` in your app you will _see_ any errors in your logs.\n\ne.g: \n\n\n### Debugging\n\nIf you need more debugging in your error template, `hapi-error` exposes _several_\nuseful properties which you can use.\n\n```js\n{\n \"method\":\"GET\",\n \"url\":\"/your-endpoint\",\n \"headers\":{\n \"authorization\":\"Bearer eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJpZCI6MTIzLCJlbWFpbCI6ImhhaUBtYWlsLm1lIiwiaWF0IjoxNDc1Njc0MDQ2fQ.Xc6nCPQW4ZSf9jnIIs8wYsM4bGtvpe8peAxp6rq4y0g\",\n \"user-agent\":\"shot\",\n \"host\":\"http://yourserver:3001\"\n },\n \"info\":{\n \"received\":1475674046045,\n \"responded\":0,\n \"remoteAddress\":\"127.0.0.1\",\n \"remotePort\":\"\",\n \"referrer\":\"\",\n \"host\":\"http://yourserver:3001\",\n \"acceptEncoding\":\"identity\",\n \"hostname\":\"http://yourserver:3001\"\n },\n \"auth\":{\n \"isAuthenticated\":true,\n \"credentials\":{\n \"id\":123,\n \"email\":\"hai@mail.me\",\n \"iat\":1475674046\n },\n \"strategy\":\"jwt\",\n \"mode\":\"required\",\n \"error\":null,\n \"token\":\"eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJpZCI6MTIzLCJlbWFpbCI6ImhhaUBtYWlsLm1lIiwiaWF0IjoxNDc1Njc0MDQ2fQ.Xc6nCPQW4ZSf9jnIIs8wYsM4bGtvpe8peAxp6rq4y0g\"\n },\n \"email\":\"hai@mail.me\",\n \"payload\":null,\n \"response\":{\n \"statusCode\":500,\n \"error\":\"Internal Server Error\",\n \"message\":\"An internal server error occurred\"\n }\n}\n```\n\nAll the properties which are logged by `hapi-error` are available in\nyour error template.\n\n### Are Query Parameters Preserved?\n\n***Yes***! e.g: if the original url is `/admin?sort=desc`\nthe redirect url will be: `/login?redirect=/admin?sort=desc`\nSuch that after the person has logged in they will be re-directed\nback to to `/admin?sort=desc` _as desired_.\n\nAnd it's valid to have multiple question marks in the URL see:\nhttps://stackoverflow.com/questions/2924160/is-it-valid-to-have-more-than-one-question-mark-in-a-url\nso the query is preserved and can be used to send the person\nto the _exact_ url they requested _after_ they have successfully logged in.\n\n
