Today's Forecast
Today: Sunny, with a high near 47. East northeast wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts up to 22 mph, tonight clear, with a low around 22. East wind 11 to 13 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph. Short Term Weather Discussion: Dry northerly to offshore flow between strong high pressure aloft over the Eastern Pacific and a cold/deep trough over the Rockies continues over California this morning. Pressure gradients strengthened overnight in the wake of another weak disturbance that dropped down into the trough through Nevada, which caused NE'erly winds to ramp up over the ridges. Pressure gradients have begun to relax some after peaking overnight and should continue to gradually relax today as should the NE to easterly winds. Otherwise, it may end up a little warmer than yesterday but still rather brisk & below freezing across the region (where it hasn't been above freezing now since last Wednesday). We're looking at another cold night tonight although probably not as cold as recent nights. High pressure aloft offshore is forecast to build inland through midweek displacing the cold trough over the Rockies out into the Plains. A warming trend is in order and temperatures tomorrow will reach above freezing topping out in the middle to upper 30s at all levels. Highs in the 40s are likely by Wednesday. Overnight lows on the ridges will be creeping up close to freezing by Wed/Thu nights while lows remain very cold in local valleys (i.e. single digits & teens). ). Latest models seem more unanimous in breaking down the ridge and bringing in some snow during the last week of January, but precipitation out through 10 days appears highly unlikely.

The data for this real-time snow and weather report is obtained directly from the snow weather plots at Kirkwood Mountain Resort and the surrounding areas. Snow totals and snow accumulation are consistently 15 to 20% more than reported as a result of wind, micro squalls and snow loading. Weather patterns at Kirkwood Mountain Resort are exceedingly difficult to predict – when venturing into the mountain, be prepared for rapid, dramatic weather changes.
