mu-error\n\nGeneric Error Maker for `mu`, the microservices toolkit\n\n[![Build Usage with `mu`\n\nIf you are using the `mu` library, then there is probably no need to require this module directly, simply use the `mu.error` instance.\n\n## Overview\n\n`mu-error` creates decorated [`boom`](http://npm.im/boom) objects, which allows\nfor compatibility with the Hapi `reply` function, without losing any value when\nintegrating with other frameworks such as Express or Koa. \n\nWhile `boom` allows HTTP status codes of 400+, `mu-error` reserves the range\nof 1..99 for mu specific errors, creating an error with this a code this range\nwill generate an HTTP status code of 500 by default and inject the mu error context into the `boom` error `output` object.\n\n## Quick Start Example\n\nIf used in a service context, simply call mue with a string.\n\n```js\nconst mu = require('mu')()\nconst mue = require('mu-error')()\n\nmu.define({role: 'some': cmd: 'thing'}, function (args, cb) {\n  if (!args.pattern.user) {\n    return cb(mue('no user found!'))\n  }\n  cb(null, {some: 'data'})\n})\n```\n\nThis will create an object like the following: \n\n```js\n{ Error: <Error Object>,\n  data: null,\n  isBoom: true,\n  isServer: true,\n  output:\n   { statusCode: 500,\n     payload:\n      { statusCode: 500,\n        error: 'Internal Server Error',\n        message: 'An internal server error occurred' },\n     headers: {},\n     mu:\n      { code: 1,\n        error: 'general service error',\n        message: 'no user found!' } },\n  reformat: [Function],\n  isMu: true }\n```\n\n## Dev Mode\n\nIf we want to see the `mu` error object returned over HTTP, we can pass a\n`dev` option, it makes sense set this based on the `NODE_ENV` environment variable.\n\n```js\nconst mue = require('mu-error')({dev: process.NODE_ENV !== 'production'})\n```\nThis will add the `output.mu` object to `output.payload.mu` also.\n\n## Error Serialization\n\n`mu-error` uses `boom` and `boom` objects are `Error` objects.\n\nThe native `Error` object has `message` and `stack` properties but they are non-enumerable, which means they don't get serialized (via `JSON.stringify`). This is somewhat awkward in a service-based system.\n\nBy default `mu-error` will make sure these values end up in the stringify output. To turn this off (e.g. perhaps in production) use `serializeErrorProps`:\n\n```js\nrequire('mu-error')({serializeErrorProps: false})\n```\n\n## Remote Errors\n\nErrors that have been propagated from another service can be passed to `mue.wrapRemote`. This is for cases where the deserialized `stack` property relates to a stack in another process. Passing the error to `mue.wrapRemote` will place a new local stack on the `err.stack` property, and append the remote stack to a `err.remoteStacks` array, which contains the object of the form `{timestamp, stack}`.\n\nThe `maxRemoteStacks` option can be used to set the maximum allowed stacks to retain in `err.remoteStacks`. This defaults to 30 when the `dev` option is false, or `Infinity` in `dev` mode.\n\n\n## Generate Specific HTTP errors\n\n`mu-error` can be used in the same way as `boom` to create http errors\n\n```js\nmu.define({role: 'some': cmd: 'thing'}, function (args, cb) {\n  if (!args.pattern.user) {\n    return cb(mue(401, 'no user found'))\n  }\n  cb(null, {some: 'data'})\n})\n```\n\nThe `boom` methods are also supported\n\n```js\nmu.define({role: 'some': cmd: 'thing'}, function (args, cb) {\n  if (!args.pattern.user) {\n    return cb(mue.unauthorized('no user found'))\n  }\n  cb(null, {some: 'data'})\n})\n```\n\nSee the [boom](http://npm.im) docs for more.\n\n## Custom mu error HTTP status code\n\nIn the event of a mu error, the status code is 500 (internal server error).\n\nWe can set this to default to another code:\n\n```js\nrequire('mu-error')({httpCode: 509})\n```\n\nIf we want to specify an error code on an individual basis we can use the `mue.makeMuError` method directly (see API). \n\n## API\n\n### `require('mu-error')(options)`\n\nInstantiate `mu-error`. \n\nOptions are\n\n* `dev` (`false`) - see [Dev Mode](#dev-mode)\n* `httpCode` (`500`) - see [Custom mu error HTTP status code](#custom-mu-error-http-status-code)\n* `serializeErrorProps` (`true`) - see [Serialize Error Props](#serialize-error-props)\n* `maxRemoteStacks` (`dev ? Infinity : 20`) see [Remote Errors](#remote-errors)\n\n### `mue(code|message, message|data, data)`\n\nThe main function for creating mu error objects.\n\nThe first arguments may be a number between 1 and 99, or 400+, \nor a string (or undefined).\n\nAs with boom, a `data` parameter can be passed to attach any useful state to the \nerror context.\n\n**Alias**: `mue.create`\n\n### `mue.wrap(error, muCode, statusCode, message)`\n\nSame concept as `boom.wrap`.\n\nWraps an `Error` (or `boom`) object (included deserialized `boom` objects) with a mu error object, \nor adds mu context to a pre-existing `boom` object.\n\n### `mue.wrapRemote(error, muCode, statusCode, message)`\n\nIntended to wraps a (usually deserialized `boom` schema) object (i.e. an error propagating across a transport), and keeps a live list of remote stacks as an array on `err.remoteStacks`. See [Remote Errors](#remote-errors).\n\n**Alias**: `mue.remote`\n\n### `mue.makeMuError(muCode, httpStatusCode, message, data)`\n\nDirectly create a mu error object, this method can be used to \ncreate a single mu error object with a custom http status code.\n\n### `mue.extract(err)`\n\nInverts the shape of the `boom` object so that the mu error context is at the top level, along with payload and data objects.\n\nFor example: \n\n```js\nconsole.log(mue.extract(mue('no user found!'))) \n```\n\nWould give\n\n```js\n{ code: 1,\n  error: 'service error',\n  message: 'no user found!',\n  data: null,\n  payload:\n   { statusCode: 500,\n     error: 'Internal Server Error',\n     message: 'An internal server error occurred' } }\n```\n\n**Alias**: `require('mu-error').extract` \n\n\n### Mu Constants\n\nThe `mue.ERRORS` object has the following constants\n\n```js\n  SERVICE: 1,\n  FRAMEWORK: 2,\n  TRANSPORT: 3,\n  UNKNOWN: 99\n```\n\n### Mu Codes\n\nThe following codes (`mue.MU_CODES`) represent internal mu errors\n\n```js\n  1: 'service error',\n  2: 'framework error',\n  3: 'transport error',\n  99: 'unknown'\n```\n\nIn userland the only code currently of interest is the `service error`, the other codes are used in mu internally.\n\n### `mue.service(message|Error, data)`\n\nGenerate a service error. \n\nWhen passed a message, this is functionally equivalent to calling `mue` directly without a code.
