is a fast, powerful flow control library which combines the\nsyntactic sugar and chaining of promises with the speed of simple callbacks.\nIt accepts synchronous and asynchronous functions, and runs them in series\nor parallel in limitless combinations. **Plans** handles errors and accepts\nreusable plan objects that can specify things like:\n* Success, failure and completion functions\n* Timeouts\n* Retries with delays and backoffs\n* HTTP responses\n* Reusable base plans for fallback\n\n**Plans** helps you do more, faster, with less code and greater reliability.\n\n\n### Quick Start\n\nInstall `plans` in your project:\n```bash\nnpm install --save plans\n```\n\nRequire `plans` in a script:\n```js\nvar plans = require('plans');\n```\n\nUse plans:\n```js\n// Flow values through an array of functions.\nvar file = 'package.json';\nplans.flow(file, [fs.readFile, JSON.parse])\n .then(function (data) {\n console.info('This package is called \"' + data.name + '\".');\n },\n function (e, filename) {\n console.error('Failed to read \"' + file + '\".', e);\n });\n```\n\nA plan can have a success or failure function:\n```js\nplans.run(fn, {\n ok: function (value) {\n console.info(\"Success!\", value);\n },\n fail: function (error) {\n console.error(\"Failure.\", error);\n }\n});\n```\n\nOr an \"errback\", if that's your thing:\n```js\nplans.run(fn, {\n done: function (error, value) {\n if (error) {\n console.info(\"Success!\", value);\n } else {\n console.error(\"Failure.\", error);\n }\n }\n});\n```\n\nAnything can be a plan, assuming it exposes methods like `ok`, `info`,\n`fail`, `error` or `done`. Since the console object has `info` and `error` methods, it can be used to show the value or the error that a function generates:\n```js\nplans.run(fn, console);\n```\n\nPlans can chain:\n```js\nplans(\"package.json\").run(fs.readFile)\n .then(function (json) {\n console.info(\"Package JSON:\\n\" + json);\n },\n function (error) {\n console.error(\"These aren't the droids you're looking for...\", error);\n });\n```\n\nOr run all functions in parallel:\n```js\nplans.all([fn1, fn2, fn3], console);\n```\n\nOr run each function in series:\n```js\nplans.each([fn1, fn2, fn3], console);\n```\n\nAnd much more:\n```js\nvar path = \"package.json\";\nvar version = \"1.0.0\";\nplans(path).flow([fs.readFile, JSON.parse], {\n ok: function (pkg) {\n console.info(\"Package name: \" + pkg.name + \".\");\n },\n fail: function (e) {\n console.error(\"Failed to read \" + process.cwd() + \"/\" + e.input + \".\", e);\n },\n SyntaxError: function (e) {\n console.error(\"Failed to parse JSON:\", e.input, e);\n }\n})\n.andRun(function (pkg) {\n pkg.version = version; // U-P-G-R-A-Y-E-D-D?\n return pkg;\n})\n.run(JSON.stringify)\n.args(function (json) {\n return [path, json];\n})\n.run(fs.writeFile, {\n ok: function () {\n console.info(\"We're at v\" + version + \"!\");\n }\n});\n\n```\n\n## Glossary\n\nThis documentation uses internally-standardized terms to describe abstract\nconcepts. Hopefully, this mapping will help.\n\n* **args** - an array or an arguments object (i.e. anything with a zero-indexed\n set of properties an integer property called `length`).\n* **base** - a plan whose properties are used in place of any properties that\n do not exist on a run's plan.\n* **chain** - an instance of `Plans.chain`, which links a run to its\n children and exposes chaining methods like `then`.\n* **collection** - an input which is either array-flavored or object-flavored.\n The former uses indexes as keys, and the latter uses properties as keys.\n* **fns** - a function or array of functions, which can operate synchronously\n by returning a value other than `undefined`, or asynchronously by passing\n a value to a callback.\n* **input** - a value that belongs to a chain and comes in one of 3 flavors:\n ***data***, ***map*** or ***list***. The latter 2 flavors can send output\n through multiple chains.\n* **keys** - numbers or strings used to map inputs to outputs.\n* **run** - an object created from arguments to a `plans` method, used to store\n the input, state and value.\n* **state** - a phase of chain processing. `0` means waiting. `1` means\n succeeded. `2` means failed. `3` means the chain was created just to\n provide input to child runs.\n* **value** - an instance of `Error` if a run failed, or a non-error value if a\n run succeeded.\n\n\n## API\n\nThe `plans` API consists of methods for running and chaining functions, and\n`plans` itself is a function that returns new chains.\n\nSo you can create a chain with \"Hi!\" as input, and log it:\n```js\nplans('Hi!').then(console.log);\n```\n\n### use(data)\n\nCreates a chain with data-flavored input to use in one call.\n\n### map(collection)\n\nCreates a chain with map-flavored input to use in parallel.\n\n### list(collection)\n\nCreates a chain with list-flavored input to use in series.\n\n### args([object], array)\n\nCreates a chain with args-flavored input to be applied to functions,\noptionally using `object` as the `this` context when arguments are applied.\n\n### run(fn, [plan])\n\nRun a single function, according to a plan.\n\n### all(fns, [plan])\n\nRun all functions in parallel, according to a plan.\n\n### each(fns, [plan])\n\nRun each function in series, according to a plan.\n\n### flow(fns, [plan])\n\nRun functions in serial, passing each value as input to the next function.\n\n### filter(fns, [plan])\n\nRun all functions on the input, generating a value composed of input items\nwhich resulted in truthy, non-error results from every function.\n\n### ignore()\n\nNo-op function, used to replace callbacks where necessary.\n\n\n## Plan Objects\n\nA plan is an object or function which specifies how you would like to handle a\nresult or an error, and all `plans` methods accept a `plan` argument. A plan\ncan be saved and reused for multiple `plans` method calls, making it easy to\ndo things like building retry/backoff/timeout/failure handling into all of your\napplication's external service calls, while conserving resources and code.\n\nPlan objects specify their behavior by having methods such as `ok` and `error`:\n\n```js\nvar plan = {\n ok: function (result) {\n console.info('Success! :)', result);\n },\n error: function (error) {\n console.error('An error occurred. :(', error);\n },\n done: function (error, result) {\n console.error('Finished.');\n }\n};\n```\n\nIf a function is used as a plan, it gets called with the arguments that an\n\"errback\" expects.\n\n### Base Plans\n\nThe `plans.base` object is used as a plan whenever an optional `plan` argument\nis omitted from a run. In addition, `plans.base` is used as the base for any\nplan that does not have its own `base` property.\n\nBy default, `plans.base` just handles failures by logging errors to the\nconsole. But if you'd rather fail silently, you can:\n```js\nplans.base = null;\n```\n\nOr you can make your own base plan do whatever you need it to do:\n```js\nplans.base = {\n\n retries: 2, // 3rd time's the charm.\n\n delay: 1e3, // Wait a sec.\n\n backoff: 2, // Then wait 2 secs.\n\n timeout: 1e4, // 10 seconds without a result is no good.\n\n // Handle success.\n ok: function (value) {\n console.log('OK: ', value);\n },\n\n // Handle failure.\n error: function (error) {\n console.log('Uh-ok: ', error);\n }\n};\n```\n\n### Plan Properties\n\nA plan can have many properties to control its behavior and handle results.\nEvery property is optional, and the base is used for any property whose value\nis undefined.\n\n#### ok: function (value) {...}\n\nCalled when there is no error. Its argument is the return value of the run.\n\nNote: For `console` support, `info` works in place of `ok`.\n\n#### fail: function (error) {...}\n\nCalled when an error occurred. Its argument is the first error that occurred.\n\nNote: For `console` support, `error` works in place of `fail`.\n\n#### fails: function (array) {...}\n\nCalled when one or more errors occurred. If a plan has both `.error`\nand `.errors`, they will both be called when an error occurs, and each of\nthem will only be called once (per usage).\n\n#### done: function (error, result) {...}\n\nCalled when execution has finished. If execution failed, the error is passed\nas the first argument, otherwise the result is passed as the second argument.\n\n#### retries: integer\n\nThe number of times to re-run before failing. If all retries fail, the plan's\nfailure methods will be called. Note: The initial run is not counted in this\nnumber, so for example, setting retries to 2 would result in 3 tries total\nbefore failing.\n\n#### delay: milliseconds\n\nThe number of milliseconds to wait before retrying (default: 0). If `backoff`\nis set to a number other than 1, then delay will be modified after the first\nretry.\n\n#### backoff: number\n\nA multiplier to be applied to `delay` after each retry, enabling exponential\nbackoff.\n\n#### timeout: milliseconds\n\nThe maximum time in milliseconds that to wait before retrying or failing.\nWhen a run times out with no retries remaining, the plan fails with a\nTimeoutError.\n\n#### base: plan\n\nA plan to fall back on, instead of using `plans.base`.\n\n#### response: http.ServerResponse\n\nThe `response` property is used to respond to an HTTP request with a 500 error.\nThis is done using the `error` property if present.\n\n## Chain Objects\n\nInstances of `plans.Chain` can be used to start child runs after the parent run\nhas ended, or to preload a run with an input.\n\n\n## Acknowledgements\n\nWe would like to thank all of the amazing people who use, support,\npromote, enhance, document, patch, and submit comments & issues.\nPlans couldn't exist without you.\n\nAdditionally, huge thanks go to [Goin’](https://goin.io) for employing\nand supporting [Plans](http://lighter.io/plans) project maintainers,\nand for being an epically awesome place to work (and play).\n\n\n## MIT License\n\nCopyright (c) 2014 Sam Eubank\n\nPermission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy\nof this software and associated documentation files (the \"Software\"), to deal\nin the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights\nto use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell\ncopies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is\nfurnished to do so, subject to the following conditions:\n\nThe above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all\ncopies or substantial portions of the Software.\n\nTHE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED \"AS IS\", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR\nIMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY,\nFITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT.
