Splitting\n\n### _CSS Vars for split words and chars!_\n\nSplitting is a JavaScript microlibrary (2kb min, 0.9kb gzipped) to split a DOM element's words and characters into `<span>`s with CSS variables, unlocking transitions and animations that were previously not feasible with CSS.\n\n---\n\n## Installation\n\nAdd Splitting to a projects with [npm](https://npmjs.org):\n\n```\nnpm install -s splitting\n```\n\nFor easy embedding on platforms like [Codepen](https://codepen.io), use [unpkg](https://unpkg.com)\n\n```html\n<script src=\"https://unpkg.com/splitting/splitting.js\"></script>\n```\n\nBe sure to include `splitting.css` for some helpful defaults to make building effects easier.\n\n---\n\n## Methods\n\nAll methods can accept a selector, element, or a NodeList/Array of elements. The parent/targetted element will receive a `splitting` class.\n\n* [Splitting.words(el)](#splittingwordsel)\n* [Splitting.chars(el)](#splittingcharsel)\n* [Splitting.lines(el)](#splittinglinesel)\n* [Splitting.fromString(str, opts)](#splittingfromstringstropts)\n* [Splitting.children(parent,children,key)](#splittingchildrenparentchildrenkey)\n\n---\n\n# Splitting.words(el)\n\nDivide an element's contents into words.\n\nParent element receives a `--total-words` CSS var containing the total number of words. Each word is wrapped in an `<span>` element with a `--word-index` containing the word's position, and a `data-word` attribute containing the actual word.\n\n### Example\n\n_Input:_\n\n```html\n<h1 data-splitting-words>Splitting words!</h1>\n```\n\n```js\nSplitting.words(\"[data-splitting-words]\");\n```\n\n_Output:_\n\n```html\n<h1 class=\"splitting\" data-splitting-chars style=\"--total-words:1;\">\n  <span class=\"word\" data-word=\"Splitting\" style=\"--word-index:0;\">Splitting</i>\n  <span class=\"word\" data-word=\"words!\" style=\"--word-index:1;\">words!</i>\n</h1>\n```\n\n---\n\n# Splitting.chars(el)\n\nDivide an element's contents into words and characters. `Splitting.words` is called on the element first to prevent characters from wrapping to the next line unnecessarily, then each word is divided into characters.\n\nParent element receives a `--total-char` CSS var containing the total number of characters. Each character is wrapped in an `<span>` element with a `--char-index` containing the characters's position, and a `data-char` attribute containing the actual character.\n\n### Example\n\n_Input:_\n\n```html\n<h1 data-splitting-chars>SPLITTING!</h1>\n```\n\n```js\nSplitting.chars(\"[data-splitting-chars]\");\n```\n\n_Output:_\n\n```html\n<h1 class=\"splitting\" data-splitting-chars style=\"--total-words:1; --total-chars:9;\">\n  <span class=\"word\" data-word=\"SPLITTING!\" style=\"--word-index:0;\">\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"S\" style=\"--char-index:0;\">S</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"P\" style=\"--char-index:1;\">P</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"L\" style=\"--char-index:2;\">L</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"I\" style=\"--char-index:3;\">I</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"T\" style=\"--char-index:4;\">T</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"T\" style=\"--char-index:5;\">T</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"I\" style=\"--char-index:6;\">I</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"N\" style=\"--char-index:7;\">N</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"G\" style=\"--char-index:8;\">G</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"G\" style=\"--char-index:8;\">!</i>\n  </i>\n</h1>\n```\n\n---\n\n# Splitting.lines(el)\n\nSplits an element by words, if not already done so, and adds an extra `--line-index` variable to each `.word`. The parent element also gets a `--line-total` var.\n\n_Does not update automatically on resize._ You'll need to attach your own event listeners _with debouncing_ for when the element's line width may have changed. Simply call `Splitting.lines` again on the element and the indexes will be updated.\n\n### Example\n\n```js\nSplitting.lines(\"p[data-splitting]\");\n```\n\n---\n\n# Splitting.fromString(str, opts)\n\nSplit a string and receive back the HTML as a string for splitting before hitting the DOM. Useful for frameworks like Vue where you may be splitting a dynamic value.\n\n### Options\n\nProvide an Object as the second parameter to change the options:\n\n```js\nSplitting.fromString(\"\", {\n  type: \"chars\", // Change to \"words\" to split only words\n  element: false // Change to true to receive an Element back instead of a String.\n});\n```\n\n### Example\n\n_Input_\n\n```html\n<h1 class=\"heading\">I'm not split.</h1>\n```\n\n```js\nvar heading = document.querySelector(\".heading\");\nheading.innerHTML = Splitting.fromString(\"I am split\");\n```\n\n_Output_\n\n```html\n<h1 class=\"heading\">\n  <span class=\" splitting\" style=\"--word-total:3; --char-total:8;\">\n    <span class=\"word\" data-word=\"I\" style=\"--word-index:0;\">\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"I\" style=\"--char-index:0;\">I</span>\n    </span>\n    <span class=\"word\" data-word=\"am\" style=\"--word-index:1;\">\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"a\" style=\"--char-index:1;\">a</span>\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"m\" style=\"--char-index:2;\">m</span>\n    </span>\n    <span class=\"word\" data-word=\"split\" style=\"--word-index:2;\">\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"s\" style=\"--char-index:3;\">s</span>\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"p\" style=\"--char-index:4;\">p</span>\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"l\" style=\"--char-index:5;\">l</span>\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"i\" style=\"--char-index:6;\">i</span>\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"t\" style=\"--char-index:7;\">t</span>\n    </span>\n  </span>\n</h1>\n```\n\n---\n\n# Splitting.children(parent,children,key)\n\nApply CSS var indexes to an element's children.\n\n### Example\n\n_Input:_\n\n```html\n<ul class=\"list\">\n  <li class=\"list-item\">1</li>\n  <li class=\"list-item\">2</li>\n  <li class=\"list-item\">3</li>\n</ul>\n```\n\n```js\nSplitting.children(\".list\", \".list-item\", \"item\");\n```\n\n_Output:_\n\n```html\n<ul class=\"list\" style=\"--total-items:3;\">\n  <li class=\"list-item\" style=\"--item-index:0;\">1</li>\n  <li class=\"list-item\" style=\"--item-index:1;\">2</li>\n  <li class=\"list-item\" style=\"--item-index:2;\">3</li>\n</ul>\n```\n\n---\n\n## Styles\n\nThe included `splitting.css` file contains all the recommended styles and easy setup for more complex CSS vars. You can include that entire stylesheet or copy what you need. Some of the styles are broken out and explained below.\n\n### Recommended Styles\n\nMany CSS properties, like `transform`, will not work by default on `display: inline` elements like `<span>`, so applying `display: inline-block` give you the most flexibility in transitions and animations while keeping your words and character layout mostly the same.\n\n```css\n.splitting .word,\n.splitting .char {\n  display: inline-block;\n}\n```\n\n### Pseudo Elements\n\nYou may have noticed that `Splitting.words` and `Splitting.chars` apply `data-word` and `data-char` attributes, respectively. This allows for great flexibility in your CSS by using Psuedo elements with `content: attr(data-char)`.\n\n```css\n.splitting .char {\n  position: relative;\n}\n\n/* Populate the psuedo elements with the character to allow for expanded effects */\n.splitting .char:before,\n.splitting .char:after {\n  content: attr(data-char);\n  position: absolute;\n  top: 0;\n  left: 0;\n  visibility: hidden;\n  transition: inherit;\n  user-select: none;\n}\n```\n","gitHead":"b730ef8fbc1b70a5190ebf1ce4a8664df7567038","scripts":{"test":"jest","build":"npm run build:lite && npm run build:lite:compressed && npm run build:all && npm run build:all:compressed","version":"npm run build && git add .","build:all":"rollup -c config/rollup.all.js","build:lite":"rollup -c config/rollup.lite.js","postversion":"git push && git push --tags","build:all:compressed":"rollup -c config/rollup.all.compressed.js","build:lite:compressed":"rollup -c config/rollup.lite.compressed.js"},"_npmUser":{"name":"shshaw","email":"stephen@brokensquare.com"},"repository":{"url":"git+https://github.com/shshaw/splitting.git","type":"git"},"_npmVersion":"6.0.0","description":"Micro-library to split a DOM element's words & chars into elements populated with CSS vars.","directories":{},"_nodeVersion":"8.9.4","dependencies":{},"_hasShrinkwrap":false,"readmeFilename":"README.md","devDependencies":{"jest":"^22.3.0","jsdom":"^11.11.0","rollup":"^0.55.5","uglify-js":"^3.3.11","babel-jest":"^23.4.0","babel-preset-env":"^1.7.0","rollup-plugin-uglify":"^4.0.0","rollup-plugin-filesize":"^2.0.0","babel-plugin-transform-es2015-modules-commonjs":"^6.26.2"},"_npmOperationalInternal":{"tmp":"tmp/splitting_1.0.0-beta_1533328252230_0.6279011691503373","host":"s3://npm-registry-packages"}},"1.0.1-beta":{"name":"splitting","version":"1.0.1-beta","keywords":["split","text","char","word","splitting","css","vars"],"author":{"url":"stephen@brokensquare.com","name":"Stephen Shaw"},"license":"MIT","_id":"splitting@1.0.1-beta","maintainers":[{"name":"shshaw","email":"stephen@brokensquare.com"}],"homepage":"https://github.com/shshaw/splitting#readme","bugs":{"url":"https://github.com/shshaw/splitting/issues"},"dist":{"shasum":"da136e1b94536d66d5ae497e5c9936d76a374771","tarball":"https://registry.npmjs.org/splitting/-/splitting-1.0.1-beta.tgz","fileCount":8,"integrity":"sha512-9HKZN259Ou+aPRIBOkWHrkcLBrim8kbp4qauV//p+A1pWBRGGrAtJzgdfyqOQELsU3C3tgYv5HRAQz+TdKcctA==","signatures":[{"sig":"MEYCIQCs2DDubQXgfJ8APWLC5dZxOTrbkOdLN78ItJIKs0tysgIhANRYi0UwZe1IdK+cWuUAaPl4765FYpae6EA79QSyjJTY","keyid":"SHA256:jl3bwswu80PjjokCgh0o2w5c2U4LhQAE57gj9cz1kzA"}],"unpackedSize":37350,"npm-signature":"-----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE-----\r\nVersion: OpenPGP.js v3.0.4\r\nComment: https://openpgpjs.org\r\n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\nt1EJ\r\n=gGqg\r\n-----END PGP SIGNATURE-----\r\n"},"jest":{"testRegex":"tests/features/.*\\.js$","transform":{"^.+\\.js":"babel-jest"},"moduleFileExtensions":["js"],"setupTestFrameworkScriptFile":"./tests/_setup.js"},"main":"splitting.js","files":["dist/*"],"readme":"# Splitting\n\n### _CSS Vars for split words and chars!_\n\nSplitting is a JavaScript microlibrary (2kb min, 0.9kb gzipped) to split a DOM element's words and characters into `<span>`s with CSS variables, unlocking transitions and animations that were previously not feasible with CSS.\n\n---\n\n## Installation\n\nAdd Splitting to a projects with [npm](https://npmjs.org):\n\n```\nnpm install -s splitting\n```\n\nFor easy embedding on platforms like [Codepen](https://codepen.io), use [unpkg](https://unpkg.com)\n\n```html\n<script src=\"https://unpkg.com/splitting/splitting.js\"></script>\n```\n\nBe sure to include `splitting.css` for some helpful defaults to make building effects easier.\n\n---\n\n## Methods\n\nAll methods can accept a selector, element, or a NodeList/Array of elements. The parent/targetted element will receive a `splitting` class.\n\n* [Splitting.words(el)](#splittingwordsel)\n* [Splitting.chars(el)](#splittingcharsel)\n* [Splitting.lines(el)](#splittinglinesel)\n* [Splitting.fromString(str, opts)](#splittingfromstringstropts)\n* [Splitting.children(parent,children,key)](#splittingchildrenparentchildrenkey)\n\n---\n\n# Splitting.words(el)\n\nDivide an element's contents into words.\n\nParent element receives a `--total-words` CSS var containing the total number of words. Each word is wrapped in an `<span>` element with a `--word-index` containing the word's position, and a `data-word` attribute containing the actual word.\n\n### Example\n\n_Input:_\n\n```html\n<h1 data-splitting-words>Splitting words!</h1>\n```\n\n```js\nSplitting.words(\"[data-splitting-words]\");\n```\n\n_Output:_\n\n```html\n<h1 class=\"splitting\" data-splitting-chars style=\"--total-words:1;\">\n  <span class=\"word\" data-word=\"Splitting\" style=\"--word-index:0;\">Splitting</i>\n  <span class=\"word\" data-word=\"words!\" style=\"--word-index:1;\">words!</i>\n</h1>\n```\n\n---\n\n# Splitting.chars(el)\n\nDivide an element's contents into words and characters. `Splitting.words` is called on the element first to prevent characters from wrapping to the next line unnecessarily, then each word is divided into characters.\n\nParent element receives a `--total-char` CSS var containing the total number of characters. Each character is wrapped in an `<span>` element with a `--char-index` containing the characters's position, and a `data-char` attribute containing the actual character.\n\n### Example\n\n_Input:_\n\n```html\n<h1 data-splitting-chars>SPLITTING!</h1>\n```\n\n```js\nSplitting.chars(\"[data-splitting-chars]\");\n```\n\n_Output:_\n\n```html\n<h1 class=\"splitting\" data-splitting-chars style=\"--total-words:1; --total-chars:9;\">\n  <span class=\"word\" data-word=\"SPLITTING!\" style=\"--word-index:0;\">\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"S\" style=\"--char-index:0;\">S</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"P\" style=\"--char-index:1;\">P</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"L\" style=\"--char-index:2;\">L</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"I\" style=\"--char-index:3;\">I</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"T\" style=\"--char-index:4;\">T</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"T\" style=\"--char-index:5;\">T</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"I\" style=\"--char-index:6;\">I</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"N\" style=\"--char-index:7;\">N</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"G\" style=\"--char-index:8;\">G</i>\n    <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"G\" style=\"--char-index:8;\">!</i>\n  </i>\n</h1>\n```\n\n---\n\n# Splitting.lines(el)\n\nSplits an element by words, if not already done so, and adds an extra `--line-index` variable to each `.word`. The parent element also gets a `--line-total` var.\n\n_Does not update automatically on resize._ You'll need to attach your own event listeners _with debouncing_ for when the element's line width may have changed. Simply call `Splitting.lines` again on the element and the indexes will be updated.\n\n### Example\n\n```js\nSplitting.lines(\"p[data-splitting]\");\n```\n\n---\n\n# Splitting.fromString(str, opts)\n\nSplit a string and receive back the HTML as a string for splitting before hitting the DOM. Useful for frameworks like Vue where you may be splitting a dynamic value.\n\n### Options\n\nProvide an Object as the second parameter to change the options:\n\n```js\nSplitting.fromString(\"\", {\n  type: \"chars\", // Change to \"words\" to split only words\n  element: false // Change to true to receive an Element back instead of a String.\n});\n```\n\n### Example\n\n_Input_\n\n```html\n<h1 class=\"heading\">I'm not split.</h1>\n```\n\n```js\nvar heading = document.querySelector(\".heading\");\nheading.innerHTML = Splitting.fromString(\"I am split\");\n```\n\n_Output_\n\n```html\n<h1 class=\"heading\">\n  <span class=\" splitting\" style=\"--word-total:3; --char-total:8;\">\n    <span class=\"word\" data-word=\"I\" style=\"--word-index:0;\">\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"I\" style=\"--char-index:0;\">I</span>\n    </span>\n    <span class=\"word\" data-word=\"am\" style=\"--word-index:1;\">\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"a\" style=\"--char-index:1;\">a</span>\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"m\" style=\"--char-index:2;\">m</span>\n    </span>\n    <span class=\"word\" data-word=\"split\" style=\"--word-index:2;\">\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"s\" style=\"--char-index:3;\">s</span>\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"p\" style=\"--char-index:4;\">p</span>\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"l\" style=\"--char-index:5;\">l</span>\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"i\" style=\"--char-index:6;\">i</span>\n      <span class=\"char\" data-char=\"t\" style=\"--char-index:7;\">t</span>\n    </span>\n  </span>\n</h1>\n```\n\n---\n\n# Splitting.children(parent,children,key)\n\nApply CSS var indexes to an element's children.\n\n### Example\n\n_Input:_\n\n```html\n<ul class=\"list\">\n  <li class=\"list-item\">1</li>\n  <li class=\"list-item\">2</li>\n  <li class=\"list-item\">3</li>\n</ul>\n```\n\n```js\nSplitting.children(\".list\", \".list-item\", \"item\");\n```\n\n_Output:_\n\n```html\n<ul class=\"list\" style=\"--total-items:3;\">\n  <li class=\"list-item\" style=\"--item-index:0;\">1</li>\n  <li class=\"list-item\" style=\"--item-index:1;\">2</li>\n  <li class=\"list-item\" style=\"--item-index:2;\">3</li>\n</ul>\n```\n\n---\n\n## Styles\n\nThe included `splitting.css` file contains all the recommended styles and easy setup for more complex CSS vars. microlibrary designed to split (section off) an element in a variety of ways, such as words, characters, child nodes, and more!\n\nMost Splitting methods utilize a series of `<span>`s populated with CSS variables and data attributes unlocking transitions and animations that were previously not feasible with CSS.\n\nInstall with `npm i splitting -s` or [Download](https://github.com/shshaw/Splitting/archive/master.zip).\n\nConsult the [guide & documentation](https://splitting.js.org/guide.html) for more details and installation instructions.\n\n-
