Currently supported directives are [`@namespace`](#namespace-directive) and [`@root`](#root-directive).\n\n## Getting started\n\nTypically,\n\n1. install `wires` globally: `npm -g install wires`\n2. use the `wires` command in lieu of `node`.\n\nSo, `node ...`
\nbecomes `wires ...`.\n\nAs of version `0.4.0`, `wires` will look for local installations based on the current working directory. This means you can add wires as a dependency to your project and have this specific version take precedence whenever the global command is ran from within said project.\n\n```\n> wires --version\nv0.4.0 (node v0.12.2)\n\n> npm install --save wires@0.2.0\nwires@0.2.0 node_modules\\wires\n├── temp@0.8.1 (rimraf@2.2.8)\n└── lodash@3.6.0\n\n> wires --version\nv0.2.0 (node v0.12.2)\n```\n\nThis behavior is compatible with version `0.2.0` and up.\n\nIf you don't want to install `wires` globally, you should use
\n`npx wires ...`
\nwhich will find and execute your locally installed `wires` command.\n\nIf you don't want to use the `wires` command, you can use the `node` executable as follows:\n- `wires` >= `5`: `node --require=wires --loader=wires ...`\n- `wires` < `5`: `node --require=wires ...`\n\nThis will enable both the CommonJS and ECMAScript module resolution override.\n\nAlternatively, if you only need CommonJS support, you can manually require `wires` at the beginning of the entry file of your project and use `node` as usual:\n\n```js\nrequire( \"wires\" );\n\n// rest of your code\n```\n\n## Cascading Configuration\n\nwires uses four types of configuration file:\n\n- `wires-defaults.json` contains default settings\n- `wires-defaults.XXX.json` contains default settings specific to when the `WIRES_ENV` environment variable is set to `\"XXX\"`\n- `wires.json` contains actual settings\n- `wires.XXX.json` contains default settings specific to when the `WIRES_ENV` environment variable is set to `\"XXX\"`\n\n__Prior to version `3.0`, `wires` did use the `NODE_ENV` environment variable rather than `WIRES_ENV`. Please adjust your projects accordingly when upgrading to version `3.0` and higher.__\n\nActual configuration depends on the position of the file requiring it in the filesystem hierarchy. Each directory gets its own configuration which is computed as follows:\n\n1. start with an empty object\n2. override with `wires-defaults.json` if it exists\n3. if `WIRES_ENV` is set to `\"XXX\"`, override with `wires-defaults.XXX.json` if it exists\n4. override with the configuration of the parent directory if it exists and if the `@root` directive isn't set to `true`\n5. override with `wires.json` if it exists\n6. if `WIRES_ENV` is set to `\"XXX\"`, override with `wires.XXX.json` if it exists\n\nIn practice, you'll rarely use all files at once. Typically, parts of your application will define default values in their respective directories while the main app will set actual settings in the root directory, as in the following example:\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n \"mysql\": {\n \"user\": \"root\",\n \"password\": \"{#>PASSWORD}\",\n \"database\": \"test3\"\n }\n}\n\n// /app/database/wires-defaults.json\n\n{\n \"mysql\": {\n \"host\": \"localhost\",\n \"port\": 3306,\n \"user\": \"\",\n \"password\": \"\"\n }\n}\n\n// /app/database/lib/someFile.js\n\nrequire( \"#mysql.host\" ) === \"localhost\";\nrequire( \"#mysql.port\" ) === 3306,\nrequire( \"#mysql.user\" ) === \"root\",\nrequire( \"#mysql.password\" ) === String( process.env.PASSWORD ),\nrequire( \"#mysql.database\" ) === \"test3\"\n```\n\n### `@namespace` Directive\n\nAdding in one of your configuration files the directive `@namespace` which value is a string creates a namespace. The namespace isolates the directory and limits its access to the part of the parent configuration defined within said namespace.\n\nLet's go back to the previous example:\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n \"mysql\": {\n \"user\": \"root\",\n \"password\": \"{#>PASSWORD}\",\n \"database\": \"test3\"\n }\n}\n\n// /app/database/wires-defaults.json\n\n{\n \"@namespace\": \"mysql\",\n\n \"host\": \"localhost\",\n \"port\": 3306,\n \"user\": \"\",\n \"password\": \"\"\n}\n\n// /app/database/lib/someFile.js\n\nrequire( \"#host\" ) === \"localhost\";\nrequire( \"#port\" ) === 3306,\nrequire( \"#user\" ) === \"root\",\nrequire( \"#password\" ) === String( process.env.PASSWORD ),\nrequire( \"#database\" ) === \"test3\"\n```\n\n_Note that routes are impervious to namespaces._\n\n### `@root` Directive\n\nSometimes, it is desirable to isolate your configuration. Set the `@root` directive to true and `wires` will stop climbing any further up the file hierarchy.\n\nSee the following example:\n\n```js\n// /parent/wires.json\n\n{\n \"parentKey\": \"parent value\",\n \"childKey\": \"overidden value\"\n}\n\n// /parent/child/wires-defaults.json\n\n{\n \"@root\": true,\n\n \"childKey\": \"child value\"\n}\n\n// /parent/child/someFile.js\n\nrequire( \"#parentKey\" ) === undefined;\nrequire( \"#childKey\" ) === \"child value\";\n```\n\n## Syntax\n\n- usual file paths\n + `require( \"./lib/myUtil.js\" )`\n + `require( \"fs\" )`\n- tilde-slash-lead, for file paths relative to home directory\n + `require( \"~/.jshint.json\" )`\n- chevron-slash-lead, for file paths relative to current working directory\n + `require( \">/logger.js\" )`\n- hash-lead, to recover settings\n + `require( \"#username\" )`\n + `require( \"#server.db.host\" )`\n- hash-then-chevron-lead, to recover environment variables\n + `require( \"#>PATH\" )`\n + `require( \"#>WIRES_ENV\" )`\n- colon-lead, to inject route-based modules\n + `require( \":model/person.js\" )`\n + `require( \":cacheFactory\" )`\n- templated, to construct paths dynamically\n + `require( \"./lib/{#vendor}/main.js\" )`\n + `require( \"nodeunit/reporters/{#unit.reporter}\" )`\n- two-colons-lead, to bypass `wires` entirely\n\t+ `require( \"::wires-will-not-transform-this\" )`\n\nTargeting `undefined` or `null` values in expressions may yield potentially undesirable `\"undefined\"` or `\"null\"` in the resulting string. If and when you change the leading `#` to a leading `?` and the targeted value is \"falsy\" (`undefined`, `null`, `false`, etc...), then the result is an empty string (`\"\"`). For instance:\n\n- the expression `\"value is '{#undefinedValue}'\"` yields `\"value is 'undefined'\"`\n- the expression `\"value is '{?undefinedValue}'\"` yields `\"value is ''\"`\n\nThis is especially handy for environment variables that may or may not be set. While `\"#>UNSET_VAR\"` would yield `\"undefined\"`, `?>UNSET_VAR` yields `\"\"`.\n\n`{` and `}` are special characters. Since version `5.1`, it is possible to escape them if and when they're needed verbatim:\n\n- the expression `\"{ placeholder }\"` throws an exception\n- the expression `\"\\\\{ placeholder \\\\}\"` yields `\"{ placeholder }\"`\n\n### Settings\n\nIn your configuration files, every object property which name is not colon-lead is a setting.\n\nA setting can be of any type, including an object. When the value of a setting is a string, it accepts the template syntax seen in the previous section.\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n \"number\": 56,\n \"boolean\": false,\n \"string\": \"some string\",\n \"templateString\": \"number is {#number}\",\n \"array\": [ 1, 2 ],\n \"object\": {\n \"templateString\": \"boolean is {#boolean}\"\n },\n \"env\": \"{?>SOME_VAR}\"\n}\n\n// /app/file.js\n\nrequire( \"#number\" ) === 56;\nrequire( \"#string\" ) === \"some string\";\nrequire( \"#templateString\" ) === \"number is 56\";\nrequire( \"#array\" ); // [ 1, 2 ]\nrequire( \"#object.templateString\" ) === \"boolean is false\";\nrequire( \"#env\" ) === ( process.env.SOME_VAR || \"\" );\n```\n\n### Fallbacks\n\nAs of version `2.0`, every object property which name ends with a question mark in your configuration files is a fallback. Fallbacks are useful in situations where a setting may be _empty_ (`\"\"`, `NaN`, `null` or `undefined`) yet you still need a default value for it.\n\n__Prior to version `4.0`, `wires` did consider any _falsy_ value as _empty_ (`0`, `false`, etc). This was changed in order to accommodate casting as introduced in the very same version.__\n\nLet's considering the following situation:\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n \"mysql_user\": \"{?>SQL_USER}\"\n}\n\n// /app/mysql/wires-defaults.json\n\n{\n \"mysql_user\": \"root\"\n}\n\n// /app/mysql/index.js\n\nrequire( \"#mysql_user\" ) === ( process.env.SQL_USER || \"\" );\n```\n\nThe environment variable `SQL_USER` may not be set and so the setting `mysql_user` may end up as an empty string. Yet, it is still _set_ and the default value defined in `wires-defaults.json` will never be used.\n\nThe problem can easily be worked around using a fallback:\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n \"mysql_user\": \"{?>SQL_USER}\"\n}\n\n// /app/mysql/wires-defaults.json\n\n{\n \"mysql_user?\": \"root\"\n}\n\n// /app/mysql/index.js\n\nrequire( \"#mysql_user\" ) === ( process.env.SQL_USER || \"root\" );\n```\n\nFallbacks act like any other setting and can be overridden using the cascading nature of configurations. They can also be recovered programmatically if and when needed.\n\nComing back to the previous example, if we redefine the fallback in the parent configuration then this new setting will be used in place of `root` as the \"fallback value\":\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n \"mysql_user\": \"{?>SQL_USER}\",\n \"mysql_user?\": \"admin\"\n}\n\n// /app/mysql/wires-defaults.json\n\n{\n \"mysql_user?\": \"root\"\n}\n\n// /app/mysql/index.js\n\nrequire( \"#mysql_user\" ) === ( process.env.SQL_USER || \"admin\" );\nrequire( \"#mysql_user?\" ) === \"admin\";\n```\n\nFallbacks also work within settings that are objects themselves. They just disappear when you require the object in its entirety:\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n \"mysql\": {\n \"user\": \"{?>SQL_USER}\"\n }\n}\n\n// /app/mysql/wires-defaults.json\n\n{\n \"mysql\": {\n \"user?\": \"root\"\n }\n}\n\n// /app/mysql/index.js\n\nrequire( \"#mysql.user\" ) === ( process.env.SQL_USER || \"root\" );\nrequire( \"#mysql.user?\" ) === \"root\";\nassert.deepEqual(\n require( \"#mysql\" ),\n {\n \"user\": process.env.SQL_USER || \"root\"\n }\n);\n```\n\n### Casting\n\nAs of version `4.0`, it is possible to cast string values into booleans or numbers in configuration files:\n\n```js\n// wires.json\n\n{\n \"bool\": \"(boolean) true\",\n \"number\": \"(number) 1204\"\n}\n\n// file.js\n\nrequire( \"#bool\" ) === true;\nrequire( \"#number\" ) === 1204;\n```\n\nIt is especially useful when dealing with environment variables:\n\n```js\n// wires.json\n\n{\n \"size\": \"(number){?>SIZE}\"\n}\n\n// file.js\n\nconst size = ( process.env.SIZE || \"\" ).trim();\nrequire( \"#size\" ) === ( size ? Number( size ) : NaN );\n```\n\nCasting follows the following rules:\n\n- For booleans (cast using `(bool)` or `(boolean)`):\n - `\"true\"` becomes `true`,\n - `\"false\"` becomes `false`,\n - any other string becomes `null`.\n- For numbers (cast using `(num)` or `(number)`), any string that cannot be parsed as a number will give `NaN` as a result.\n\n```js\n// wires.json\n\n{\n \"true\": \"(bool) true\",\n \"false\": \"(bool) false\",\n \"null\": \"(bool) not a boolean\",\n \"number\": \"(num) 1204\",\n \"NaN\": \"(num) not a number\",\n}\n\n// file.js\n\nrequire( \"#true\" ) === true;\nrequire( \"#false\" ) === false;\nrequire( \"#null\" ) === null;\nrequire( \"#number\" ) === 1204;\nisNaN( require( \"#NaN\" ) );\n```\n\nYou can put an arbitrary number of spaces after the opening parenthesis and around the closing parenthesis. Like settings, they do accept the template syntax. The final string must be a path to a file that actually exists.\n\nFile paths may refer to a file:\n\n- globally (relying on `NODE_PATH`)\n- relatively to the directory of the configuration file (start with `\"./\"` or `\"../\"`)\n- relatively to the home directory (start with `\"~/\"`)\n- relatively to the current working directory (start with `\">/\"`)\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n\t\":dbRequest\": \"mysql/request\",\n\t\":cacheFactory\": \"../cache/factory\",\n\t\":data\": \">/data.json\"\n\t\":eslint\": \"~/.eslintrc.json\"\n}\n\n// /app/some/path/inside/index.js\n\nrequire( \":dbRequest\" ) === require( \"mysql/request\" );\nrequire( \":cacheFactory\" ) === require( \"/cache/factory\" );\nrequire( \":data\" ) === require( \"/working/dir/data.json\" );\nrequire( \":eslint\" ) === require( \"/home/me/.eslintrc.json\" );\n```\n\nAs of version `2.1.0`, it is possible to set a route to `null`. Requiring such a route would result in `null`.\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n\t\":not-implemented-yet\": null\n}\n\n// /app/some/path/inside/index.js\n\nrequire( \":not-implemented-yet\" ) === null;\n```\n\n### Generic Routes\n\nIn your configuration files, every object property which name is colon-lead and ends with a slash defines a generic route.\n\nLike normal routes, they must be strings, they do accept the templated syntax and they have the same semantics (`NODE_PATH`, `\"./\"`, `\"../\"`, `\"~/\"`, `\">/\"` ). However, they may not point to the path of an existing file since the final string will be used as a replacement for the property name in require expressions.\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n \":dbo/\": \"./db/model-\",\n}\n\n// /app/mvc/controllers/mainPage.js\n\nrequire( \":dbo/client\" ) === require( \"/app/db/model-client\" );\nrequire( \":dbo/car/bmw\" ) === require( \"/app/db/model-car/bmw\" );\n```\n\nAs of version `2.1.0`, it is possible to set a generic route to `null`. Requiring such a route and its children would result in `null`.\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n \":to-do/\": null,\n}\n\n// /app/mvc/controllers/mainPage.js\n\nrequire( \":to-do/child\" ) === null;\nrequire( \":to-do/other/path\" ) === null;\n```\n\n### Computed Routes\n\nAs of version `2.1.0`, in your configuration files, every object property which name is colon-lead and ends with a slash followed by an opening then a closing parenthesis defines a computed route.\n\nThey are very similar to generic routes except there is no automatic concatenation performed by `wires`. Rather, the value must be a string pointing to a module that exports a function. This function will be called by `wires` with the path segments as arguments and is expected to return the resulting path.\n\nThis sounds quite complicated but let's re-implement the generic route example from the previous section with a computed route:\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n \":dbo/()\": \"./helpers/dbo.js\",\n}\n\n// /app/helpers/dbo.js\n\nmodule.exports =\n ( ...pathSegments ) =>\n \"../db/model-\" + pathSegments.join( `/` );\n\n// /app/mvc/controllers/mainPage.js\n\nrequire( \":dbo/client\" ) === require( \"/app/db/model-client\" );\nrequire( \":dbo/car/bmw\" ) === require( \"/app/db/model-car/bmw\" );\n```\n\nPlease note that paths returned by the function are resolved relatively to the location of the file where the function is defined.\n\n_Computed Route functions must be defined in CommonJS modules. ECMAScript Modules are __not__ supported here._\n\nIt is possible for a computed route function to return `null` : requiring such a route and its children would result in `null`.\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n \":dbo/()\": \"./helpers/dbo.js\",\n}\n\n// /app/helpers/dbo.js\n\nmodule.exports = () => null; // not implemented yet\n\n// /app/mvc/controllers/mainPage.js\n\nrequire( \":dbo/client\" ) === null;\nrequire( \":dbo/product\" ) === null;\n```\n\n## `import`\n\nAs of version `5.0`, `wires` overrides both static and dynamic import statements. This makes it compatible with ES Module based projects.\n\nUnlike `require`, `import()` needs fully defined paths, file extension included, and fails to fetch `index.js` when targeted at a directory, so you have to keep that in mind when creating routes.\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n \":dir1\": \"./dir\",\n \":dir2\": \"./dir/index\",\n \":dir3\": \"./dir/index.js\"\n}\n\n// /app/dir/index.js\n\nmodule.exports = \"You Found Me!\";\n\n// /app/cjs.js\n\nrequire( `:dir1` ) === \"You Found Me!\"\nrequire( `:dir2` ) === \"You Found Me!\"\nrequire( `:dir3` ) === \"You Found Me!\"\n\n// /app/esm.js\n\nimport message1 from \":dir1\"; // fails with exception\nimport message2 from \":dir2\"; // fails with exception\nimport message3 from \":dir3\"; // succeeds!\n\nmessage3 === \"You Found Me!\";\n```\n\nAlso, for object values, `wires` will create a named export for every property which name is a proper JavaScript identifier.\n\n```js\n// /app/wires.json\n\n{\n \"object\": {\n \"property1\": 1,\n \"property2\": 2,\n \"no name export\": 3\n }\n}\n\n// /app/esm.js\nimport object, { property1, property2 } from \"#object\";\n\nobject.property1 === 1;\nobject.property2 === 2;\nobject[ \"no name export\" ] === 3;\n\nproperty1 === 1;\nproperty2 === 2;\n```\n\n## Bundlers\n\nA primary goal of `wires` is to be compatible with as many bundlers as possible.
