JavaScript and TypeScript (on Node 24+.)\n\n## Installation\n\n_NOTE: This is an ESM-only package._\n\n```sh\nnpm install yargs-file-commands\n```\n\n## Example\n\n### 1. Setup\n\nFirst, configure your entry point to scan your commands directory:\n\n```ts\nimport path from 'path';\nimport yargs from 'yargs';\nimport { hideBin } from 'yargs/helpers';\nimport { fileCommands } from 'yargs-file-commands';\n\nexport const main = async () => {\n  const commandsDir = path.join(process.cwd(), 'dist/commands');\n\n  return yargs(hideBin(process.argv))\n    .scriptName('my-cli')\n    .command(await fileCommands({ commandDirs: [commandsDir] }))\n    .help().argv;\n};\n```\n\n### 2. File Structure\n\nYou can use any combination of file names and directories. We support either [NextJS](https://nextjs.org/docs/app/building-your-application/routing/dynamic-routes) or [Remix](https://remix.run/docs/en/main/file-conventions/routes) conventions for interpreting filenames and directories.\n\n```\n/commands\n├── db\n│   ├── migration\n│   │   └── command.ts // the \"db migration\" command\n│   └── health.ts      // the \"db health\" command\n├── $default.ts        // the default command\n└── studio.start.ts    // the \"studio start\" command\n```\n\nThe above will result in these commands being registered:\n\n```\ndb migration\ndb health\nstudio start\n```\n\n### 3. Define Commands\n\nUse the `defineCommand` helper to define your commands. This ensures full type safety for your arguments based on the options you define in the `builder`.\n\n**Basic Command (`commands/studio.start.ts`)**\n\n```ts\nimport { defineCommand } from 'yargs-file-commands';\n\nexport const command = defineCommand({\n  command: 'start', // Optional: defaults to filename if omitted\n  describe: 'Studio web interface',\n  builder: (yargs) =>\n    yargs.option('port', {\n      alias: 'p',\n      type: 'number',\n      describe: 'Port to listen on',\n      default: 3000,\n    }),\n  handler: async (argv) => {\n    // argv.port is correctly typed as number\n    console.log(`Starting studio on port ${argv.port}`);\n  },\n});\n```\n\n**Positional Arguments (`commands/create.ts`)**\n\n```ts\nimport { defineCommand } from 'yargs-file-commands';\n\nexport const command = defineCommand({\n  command: 'create <name>', // Define positional args in the command string\n  describe: 'Create a new resource',\n  builder: (yargs) =>\n    yargs.positional('name', {\n      describe: 'Name of the resource',\n      type: 'string',\n      demandOption: true,\n    }),\n  handler: async (argv) => {\n    // argv.name is correctly typed as string\n    console.log(`Creating resource: ${argv.name}`);\n  },\n});\n```\n\n**Default Export**\n\nThe command module can also be the file's default export. It is treated exactly like `export const command`, including the filename fallback for the command name:\n\n```ts\nimport { defineCommand } from 'yargs-file-commands';\n\nexport default defineCommand({\n  command: 'get <id>',\n  describe: 'Get a thing',\n  handler: async (argv) => {\n    console.log(`Getting ${argv.id}`);\n  },\n});\n```\n\n**Default Command (`commands/$default.ts`)**\n\nThis command runs when no other command is specified.\n\n```ts\nimport { defineCommand } from 'yargs-file-commands';\n\nexport const command = defineCommand({\n  describe: 'Default command',\n  handler: async (argv) => {\n    console.log('Running default command');\n  },\n});\n```\n\n### 4. Shared Options\n\nTo share options between commands while maintaining type safety, you can use either helper functions (recommended for correct type inference) or shared option objects.\n\n**Approach 1: Helper Functions (Recommended)**\n\nThis approach uses function composition to chain option definitions, allowing TypeScript to correctly infer the resulting types.\n\n```ts\n// shared.ts\nimport type { Argv } from 'yargs';\n\nexport const withPagination = <T>(yargs: Argv<T>) => {\n  return yargs\n    .option('page', {\n      type: 'number',\n      default: 1,\n      describe: 'Page number',\n    })\n    .option('limit', {\n      type: 'number',\n      default: 10,\n      describe: 'Items per page',\n    });\n};\n\n// commands/users.ts\nimport { defineCommand } from 'yargs-file-commands';\nimport { withPagination } from '../shared.js';\n\nexport const command = defineCommand({\n  command: 'list',\n  builder: (yargs) => withPagination(yargs),\n  handler: async (argv) => {\n    // argv.page and argv.limit are correctly typed as number\n    console.log(`Page: ${argv.page}, Limit: ${argv.limit}`);\n  },\n});\n```\n\n**Approach 2: Shared Objects**\n\nYou can also define a common options object and spread it into your command definitions.\n\n```ts\n// shared.ts\nexport const commonOptions = {\n  verbose: {\n    alias: 'v',\n    type: 'boolean',\n    describe: 'Run with verbose logging',\n    default: false,\n  } as const,\n};\n\n// commands/users.ts\nimport { defineCommand } from 'yargs-file-commands';\nimport { commonOptions } from '../shared.js';\n\nexport const command = defineCommand({\n  command: 'list',\n  builder: (yargs) => yargs.options(commonOptions),\n  handler: async (argv) => {\n    // argv.verbose is correctly typed\n    if (argv.verbose) console.log('Verbose mode');\n  },\n});\n```\n\n## Group Definitions\n\nA directory of commands becomes a group, described as `<name> commands` by default. To configure the group itself, add a file at the group's own path, conventionally `command.ts` inside its directory:\n\n```\n/commands\n└── db\n    ├── command.ts   // defines the \"db\" group itself\n    ├── health.ts    // \"db health\"\n    └── backup.ts    // \"db backup\"\n```\n\n```ts\n// commands/db/command.ts\nimport type { Argv } from 'yargs';\n\nexport const describe = 'Database tools'; // or `false` to hide the group from --help\nexport const aliases = ['database'];\n\n// Options and middleware declared here apply to every command in the group\nexport const builder = (yargs: Argv) =>\n  yargs.option('region', { type: 'string', default: 'us' }).middleware(async (argv) => {\n    // e.g. connect to the database for argv.region\n  });\n```\n\nSupported: `command`, `describe`, `aliases`, `deprecated` and `builder`, as individual exports, a `command` object, or a default export. A group definition must **not** export a `handler`: groups require a subcommand, so the handler would never run. A file with a handler at a group's path (for example `db.ts` next to a `db/` directory) is reported as a conflict.\n\nA group definition in a later `commandDirs` entry replaces one from an earlier directory, so an overlay can re-describe or hide a generated group.\n\n## Command Overlays\n\n`commandDirs` can list several directories. Their trees are merged: groups with the same name combine their commands, and when two directories define the same command, **the later directory wins**. This lets you layer hand-written commands over generated ones without editing the generated files:\n\n```ts\nawait fileCommands({\n  commandDirs: [\n    path.join(distDir, 'commands-generated'), // e.g. generated from an OpenAPI spec\n    path.join(distDir, 'commands'), // hand-written: replaces or adds to the generated tree\n  ],\n});\n```\n\n```\ncommands-generated/            commands/\n├── db/                        ├── db/\n│   ├── health.ts              │   ├── health.ts   // replaces the generated \"db health\"\n│   └── backup.ts              │   └── restore.ts  // adds \"db restore\" next to \"db backup\"\n└── status.ts                  └── login.ts        // adds a new top-level command\n```\n\nA command in one directory and a group of the same name in another is a conflict error, and so are two files in the **same** directory that map to the same command (for example `db.health.ts` and `db/health.ts`).\n\n## Lazy Loading\n\nCommand modules are loaded lazily, one group at a time. `fileCommands` scans the whole directory tree up front, which is cheap, but imports only the root-level command files. A group imports its own command files when yargs enters it, so `my-cli --help` loads only root-level commands, and `my-cli db migration` loads only the files in `commands/` and `commands/db/` (sibling commands are needed for help output). Large CLIs with thousands of commands stay fast to start.\n\nBecause group builders are async, parse with `await yargs(...).parseAsync()` (or `await ....argv`) rather than relying on a synchronous `.parse()` result.\n\nA command file with a mistake in it is only imported when a user goes into its group, so call `validateCommands` from a test to import and check every command (see [Validating commands in tests](#validating-commands-in-tests)).\n\n## Options\n\nThe `fileCommands` method takes the following options:\n\n**commandDirs**\n\n- An array of directories where the routes are located relative to the build root folder.\n- Required\n\n**extensions**\n\n- An array of file extensions for the route files. Files without matching extensions are ignored\n- Default: `[\".js\", \".ts\"]`\n\n**ignorePatterns**\n\n- An array of regexs which if matched against a filename or directory, lead it to being ignored/skipped over.\n- Default: `[ /^[.|_].*/, /\\.(?:test|spec)\\.[jt]s$/, /__(?:test|spec)__/, /\\.d\\.ts$/ ]`\n\n**logLevel**\n\n- The verbosity level for the plugin, either `debug` or `info`\n- Default: `\"info\"`\n\n**demandCommandMessage**\n\n- The error message used when a group is run without a subcommand, the same for every group at every depth. A single message lets a `.fail()` handler recognise this case, for example to show the group's help instead of an error:\n\n```ts\nyargs(hideBin(process.argv))\n  .command(await fileCommands({ commandDirs, demandCommandMessage: 'Please specify a subcommand' }))\n  .fail((msg, err, y) => {\n    if (msg === 'Please specify a subcommand') return y.showHelp('log');\n    throw err ?? new Error(msg);\n  });\n```\n\n- Default: `You must specify a <group> subcommand`\n\n**validation**\n\n- Whether to validate that positional arguments registered in the builder function match those declared in the command string\n- When enabled, throws an error if positional arguments are registered via `.positional()` but not declared in the command string (e.g., `command: 'create'` should be `command: 'create <arg1> <arg2>'` if positionals are used)\n- This helps catch a common mistake where positional arguments are defined in the builder but missing from the command string, which causes them to be `undefined` at runtime\n- Default: `false`. The check runs each command's builder, which adds noticeable startup time to large CLIs, so run it in your tests with `validateCommands` instead (see below)\n\n**Example:**\n\n```ts\n// ❌ This will fail validation if validation: true\nexport const command = defineCommand({\n  command: 'create', // Missing positional arguments!\n  builder: (yargs) => yargs.positional('name', { ... }),\n});\n\n// ✅ This passes validation\nexport const command = defineCommand({\n  command: 'create <name>', // Positional arguments declared\n  builder: (yargs) => yargs.positional('name', { ... }),\n});\n```\n\n### Validating commands in tests\n\n`validateCommands` takes the same options as `fileCommands`. It imports every command module and runs positional validation, and throws on the first problem, including a command file that fails to import.
